E.T. - I hadn't seen E.T. in 20yrs easy and just did a rewatch. It's still a great film even through adult eyes. The government spooks are portrayed as quite threatning and those scenes still deliver. I can appreciate Elliott showing off his Star Wars figures to E.T. even more as well.

Elf - Yes, I was the last holdout of humanity who had not see the film that is apparently adored by all. My girlfriend's jaw hit the ground when I told her I'd not seen it. She was all, "How does the owner of his own Blockbuster not manage to see ELF?". I told her the same way he's not seen all the Harry Potters. I narrowly avoided a breakup by watching ELF I think and am pleased to report it is, honestly, as good as it's reputation.

Well, I've watched a few movies the last couple of weeks...

Nebraska was a movie I was curious about, so when I saw it had been added to Netflix, I thought I'd check it out. All about a son takin' his possibly senile father (Bruce Dern) to claim a sweepstakes prize. Kinda bummed to see Bruce Dern lookin' so old and feeble, considerin' he killed John Wayne that one time.

A friend suggested I watch one of Mike Birbiglia's stand up specials, and it was really good. So I watched another one that was on Netflix, and it wasn't as good, and I was really disappointed by the SWM feature that was just his life's story about how he started as a comedian. Ah, well...at least the first one was really good.

A2:TLC was pretty stupid, as I expected it to be, but worth it for all the celebrity cameos in the end, especially Jim Carrey & Liam Neeson. Not sure if I'll watch the extended version or not, but it is on Netflix, too.

I got my brother in law The Expendables trilogy on DVD for Christmas, and since he was here over the weekend, and wasn't sure if he'd be off for Christmas or not, he got to open his gifts early (and the nephews got to open the gifts from their parents, but the ones from me are still under the tree). Since neither of us had seen the third movie in the series, we watched it Sunday afternoon.

The first one is still the best of the series. This one was just too crowded, I think.

And, finally, I went out to see the third of the three Hobbit movies tonight after my oldest nephew's basketball game! I got into the 10:15 show, and it ended just before 1:00....certainly didn't feel that long. Must have been all the action and lack of singin' or walkin'. Kinda sucks that Martin Freeman's Bilbo is such a minor part of the finale for the trilogy, and I could have done with the Alfred character entirely. And it needed more Ian McKellan, considerin' he got top billin'.

All in all, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring is still my favorite of Peter Jackson's Middle Earth movies.

THX 1138: I wasn't overly impressed with this early and first theatrical film of Lucas. Why is it no matter when or what time period a "future dystopian" film is made the future more often than not is a depressing homogenous bleak place? I'm still left wondering about that closing shot though? Is the Earth uninhabitable on the surface or is there a reason this society is all underground?

Dirty Harry: A first time viewing of the film. A classic and forerunner to what would be the archetypes we know in Death Wish, Die Hard, Rambo and others. It was interesting seeing that a very young Andrew Robinson (Garak the Tailor of DS9) was the evil killer Scorpio. I intend to watch the other 4 over the rest of December.

Reel Injun - Netflix via Apple TV - a Documentary about the history of the depiction of Native Americans in Hollywood films. A fantastic documentary, with interviews with many of the leading American Indians in hollywood.

Girl in Progress - HBO go - A good movie with some excellent performances and some really witty writing that is totally let down by some really poor direction. It's a coming of age story about a girl trying to spur along her coming of age.

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen - Amazon Prime via Apple TV - This is one of those little movie that only get made because they were funded by a lottery. This is a fantastic movie, with a reserved performance by Ewan McGregor. Way back when it first came out I wanted to watch it because of Ewan McGregor but I actually watched it now because it has Tom Mison. He is of course Ichabod Crane on tv's Sleepy Hollow. He's only in it briefly, but contributes significantly to the plot. Emily Blunt is pretty darn good in it as well but who really steals the movie is Kristin Scott Thomas. She's like the female version of Peter Capaldi character who swears all the time, sorry can't remember the name of the movie/tv show that the character comes from.

47 Ronin - HBO go via Apple TV - Honestly I had an hour and half to watch a movie and this one fit the bill. Only reason I watched it but with saying that, 47 Ronin was actually a better movie then I thought it would be. Of course it's based on a true story from Japan but with fantasy elements added to it. It also stars Keanu Reeves as a half breed, who is taken in with compassion by lord Asano. Keanu actually gives a pretty good performance here, while the most high profile of actor, in now way would I say he is the star of this movie.

 

I watched the Dirty Harry films a few years ago, well worth checkin' out, though there is a steady decline in quality.

Every fan of Clint Eastwood should watch 'em.

Went by Hasting's after work, rented a couple of movies while my sister went to see THG: Mockingjay without me. She says she'll go see it again when I go, but its not the same, man.

First rental to watch was TPA, which I liked quite a bit more than the original. While the first one was focused on one household and a couple of threats to the family. The sequel takes place in a larger arena - a married couple with a sabotaged car, a mother & daughter dragged out by mercenaries, and a father out for revenger all comin' together to survived the Purge in a city instead of the suburbs like the first one.

Watchin' WTGST with my sister now, and while I'm usually a fan of "based on a true story" sports films, this one has a bit too much religion for my tastes.

Hasting's has a thing goin' for Christmas - free rentals on Wednesday, due back Friday.

The info on our cable box totally mislead my fiancee into taping it as a romantic evening. Little did she know this was a Syfy movie akin to "Sharknado." But, given the subject matter, the actors did well, with no wink wink nudge nudge moments of how crappy it could be. This includes SGU's Sergeant Riley, Haig Sutherland, who ends up getting blown up early on. Guy can't catch a break in any universe.

47) A Merry Friggin' Christmas - B

Another movie that Robin Williams was in under the radar. He gets to be the random guy in flashbacks, but manages to perform his dramatic scenes believably without screaming or making weird voices. Being supported by Joel McHale, Lauren Graham and Candace Bergen help out, but the grating Clark Duke of Kick-Ass fame, with only one good scene where he translates Farsi, and the amount of fluff needed to keep the main plot afloat drags it down.

Found the extended cut of the latest PA movie on Netflix last night, and watched it. Usually I go for the theatrical version for this sort of thing, but since the extended cut was there, I watched it. It was just as dumb, if not more so, as the first three, with people carryin' a camera around when they should have dropped it, or, at least have been holdin' it at a different angle. And then the end itself...just how exactly was this "found footage" considerin' where the camera ends up?

Anyway...

After it was over, the theatrical version came up on the recommendations, so I may watch it, see what the differences are.

Tonight, I watched a retrospective about Mel Brooks and his career as a comedian, writer, actor, producer, director...enjoyed it quite a bit. Really in the mood to watch Blazing Saddles now, though.

136. Miracle on 34th Street (1947) (A-)

The original iteration of this story, which I had never seen before. I thought it was interesting to watch it alongside the 1994 version, which I recall seeing as a child. One of the things that had kind of slipped my mind about both is that the movie never outright says that Kringle is the real Santa Claus (though the 1994 version leans more strongly toward that impression). I found this movie's balance between the idealistic aspects of its premise and some outright cynical/realistic elements rather interesting -- the case is only won, for instance, because of a few postal workers looking to get rid of dead letters; and the war between the department stores is largely neutral on the motives and character of the parties, as well as those of the people prosecuting the judging Kringle in court. The film is briskly paced, though I think some elements of it (especially the relationship between O'Hara and Payne) are a little underwritten.

137. Miracle on 34th Street (1994) (B)

The John Hughes-supervised 1994 remake, despised in some quarters; I don't think it's anywhere near that bad, though I can see why some don't like it, since it very much reconfigures aspects of the story into more of a 90s family movie. Most notably, the very clear villains. There are some individual touches that I think improve on the original (like having the store manager and attorney characters already be in a relationship), though on the whole it's not as good; but it's not terrible either. The main selling points in film are the performances of early 90s cultural touchstone Mara Wilson and the recently deceased Lord Attenborough.

138. The Interview (B)

The fairly average bro comedy that managed to become a must-see cinematic event after an insanely over-the-top act of foreign state cyber-warfare. That response triggered many comparison to The Great Dictator, but while the response may be similar, they aren't in the same league content-wise or in terms of quality (nor are they trying to be, frankly; this controversy has also burdened the film with expectations it would never have had otherwise).

This isn't Rogen and Goldberg at the top of their games (their directorial debut, This Is The End, was seriously one of my favourite movies of last year), but it does have its smarter elements -- I particularly like that the mission is basically coopted by North Korea's domestic dissenters, a point that is explicitly made at the end. The movie is pretty bloody for a comedy, it must be said, with a couple of bits of entirely unexpected comic gore involving Rogen, especially. Rogen delivers a reliable performance; Franco I feel is mildly miscast here (he still comes across a bit too smart while trying to play acute vacuity); Randall Park and Diana Bang, as the key North Korean roles, are both terrific (Bang, especially, is probably the acting highlight).

I hope the people like myself who view it online don't all get our bank accounts hacked or something. Though in my case case there'd be perilously little in it anyway.

Hasting's had a special for the holiday - free rentals on Christmas Eve (limit ten) as long as they're returned on the day after Christmas. I went by before work and picked out eight movies - five that would be new, two old favorites & one I wanted my sister to watch.

Started off with Edge of Tomorrow, which I saw in theaters earlier this year, but my sister missed. My younger nephew watched a bit of it with us, too. She compared it to The Matrix, but said she liked it. I still do, especially the "Maggot!" *blam* "Maggot!" *blam* bit.

Followed that with VA, which she gave up on about twenty minutes in. I stuck it out, and discovered there is a worse movie than Twilight when it comes to showin' vampires in high school!

...ugh...

And then the Sin City sequel...which wasn't nearly as good as the first, though. Told in the same visual, non linear style, it didn't bring anything new and even managed to look cheaper than the first. Not even Bond Girl Eva Green's nudity could save it.

Two old favorites this mornin' for Christmas - National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation and Die Hard. They're still great in their own ways.

Watched the latest TMNT movie with my nephews. Dozed off here & there durin' it, but got the general gist of it...the CGI animated one that came out a few years back is still my favorite.

I had rented LBC for them, too, since they both wanted to go to it in theaters. Freakin' stupid movie...but, they enjoyed it, except for that one tea bag part.

And then the last rental, TG, which I got for Jeff Bridges bein' in it. It was an alright movie, too, though I would have liked to see the effects of the kid's actions, it was all build up with no real resolution.

Watchin' the old Paul Newman pool shark movie via Netflix now, before I call it a night.

 

John Wick ★★★1/2

This was the surprise film of the year for me. Very enjoyable flick where Keanu Reeves gets to shoot 400 people in the head.

What better film to follow up The Interview with? I haven't seen this since it first came out in 2004, though at ten years' remove I find I remembered it pretty well. I don't think Parker and Stone are necessarily great political satirists (a philosophy that often comes down to mocking anyone with any convictions becomes tiresome after a while), but they're expert satirists of pop culture, and this takedown of the Michael Bay action blockbuster is close to pitch perfect in that respect (mixed in with their loving parody of marionette action shows).

140. Into the Woods (B+)

Rob Marshall's latest film is his best since Chicago, which admittedly isn't a high bar to clear, but I like this quite a bit. I gather that a lot of the second act of the musical has been cut, but as I haven't seen it, I can't assess it in that lens, though I've read about many of the cuts. The only one that feels especially noticeable is the way Rapunzel's story tapers off. Otherwise, it's a fun movie, with Sondheim's typically strong music (which typically doesn't strive for standalone hum-ability) and a great cast. Emily Blunt and James Corden are the heart of the story, though Anna Kendrick, Meryl Streep and (surprisingly) Chris Pine are also in top form. There are points (mainly to do with the giant) where the movie is clearly straining against its budget a bit, but there's the slight of the mid-budget adaptation of a musical with ambitious subject-matter.

It wasn't as good as I remember it and really without Bill Murray, this wouldn't have passed D.
