I don't know what people see in Steve Martin, but he is balanced out by an excellent performance by Michael Caine. It reminds me of an old fifties style movie with the back and forth. A good distraction for a Sunday afternoon.

Cats & Dogs 2: It's an intentional satire film aimed at kids/families spooking the action&spy genre using domesticated pets. For what it was it's enjoyable enough. As a beagle owner I find it humorous that a beagle runs the organization and gives the orders.

Twelve: Not even sure if this was theatrical. It was one of those Netflix suggested based on other viewing habits. If felt like a very Indie production that probably made the film festival rounds at some point. The main character is Michael aka White Mike who used to be an up and comer living a rather privileged life in NY. His mom dies of cancer and he does a total character & life style change, becoming a drug dealer(pot) to his rich friends. Lying to the one girl(Molly/Emma Roberts) who would love him if he let her. We are told in one scene by Mike how Molly reminds him of the best traits of his mom so perhaps that's why he keeps her at arms length. We see the film unfold and various story lines unfold over the course of 3 days and it all ends very tragically. Even for the survivors of the drama at the films end. There is a running voiceover narrator that gives the film a unique vibe. Almost documentary-esque so I give that props for helping keep the film moving along. Twelve is the name of a new drug on the streets.

I can't think of much new to say about this one. It's a landmark achievement for both Disney and American animation, and it still holds up almost a quarter century later.

107. The Wolf of Wall Street (A+)

My first viewing of Martin Scorsese's black comedy masterpiece since I saw it in theatres. My opinion of it hasn't really changed; I can see why this movie wouldn't appeal to some, but Scorsese's take-no-prisoners depiction of the lifestyle of a corrupt stockbroker and the culture of Wall Street just works for me. DiCaprio is in top form (he should take roles that allow him to be funny more; the infamous Qualuudes scene is a masterpiece of physical comedy), ably supported by the ample ensemble, especially Hill (who gave what was probably my favourite of the performances nominated for supporting actor last year; it's not an especially deep performance, but whatever, pretty much every second he's on screen he's funny).

In my time in university doing the English half of my double-major, we assessed the ways in which ostensible morality tales often function as ways for the audience to indulge and enjoy the protagonists' bad behaviour for most of the length of the story, and then absolves the audience at he end by either (a) having the person repent of their sinful ways or (b) having them suffer the serious consequences of their actions. I think part of the controversy around this film's reception is Scorsese's uncompromising refusal to afford the audience either of those escape routes for vicarious thrills at Belfort's lifestyle. The ending is actually bleaker than the ending of Goodfellas, which, though very cynical, ended with Henry punished by being forced to live a "normal" life and be a "schnook", in his own words. Belfort quite openly mocks the idea that his time in prison was a punishment, and goes right back to selling snake oil. Sure, he's lost his family, but he doesn't especially seem to care, and at the end of the movie he has reinvented himself as a motivational speaker.

Watched a couple of animated Marvel movies yesterday.

Eternals is a Marvel Knights motion comic based on the Neal Gaimon update for the Jack Kirby characters. Basically, demigods with no memory of bein' demigods have to save the planet from a threat brought about by one of their own.

It was a okay...took two tries to watch it, 'cause I fell asleep the first time a couple of weeks ago.

Followed that with the latest "Heroes United" CGI animation. This time the focus is on Iron Man & Captain America, with their different approaches to combat, going up against Red Skull & the Taskmaster.

I liked this one a bit more than the last, which had the team up between Iron Man & Hulk. And it was definitely better than the Black Widow & Punisher movie.

Got a plan to see The Maze Runner this weekend with my younger nephew. Hope it doesn't suck...

I will preface my comments by saying I had not read the book before going into this movie, so some of my criticisms may come from the source material. I liked it, but there is plenty of things that are brought up and then glossed over or are just not fleshed out.

Why is Harrison Ford so sure that the aliens are going to attack again? It's a good bet he was around for the first attack, but has that jaded him? Has that made him not see these kids as kids as Viola Davis' character brings up?

Why does Ender have such a great relationship with Valentine and such a poor one with his brother? It can't just be because she is compassionate and he is a brute.

Is this movie a commentary about child soldiers or how war is bad or how war is a necessary evil to bring peace? Is it about how damaged soldiers can under the pressures of military hierarchies?

This is a movie that would have been better served in a Hunger Games set-up, spreading the material across a couple movies and inserting into it to help flesh out some of these ideas. Without that back story, you get a good movie, but not one that is particularly deep.

X-Men: Days of Futures Past - On Demand - When I first read the comic, many years ago. I always pictured in my head how it could be a movie. Here it is, all the time imagining it as a movie, I never really thought they would ever make it. While I liked it a whole lot, I thought the acting was great, I thought it was a clever adaptation and I liked all the action. Something left me a bit cold about the movie. I may have to watch it again to figure it out, this could be the best X-Men movie. I'm not ready to dethrone X-Men 2 but it's pretty damn close.

Edge of Tomorrow - On Demand - I loved this movie, one of the best movies I've seen so far. This is like a movie Steven Spielberg would have directed 20 years ago. This is one of those movies you miss seeing in the movie theater and after seeing it, you kick yourself for not seeing in a theater. Bill Paxton is great in his little part of the movie. Everyone is great, I can't wait to watch this again.

Actually got out of work on time last night, without havin' to stay over. I checked the movie listings ahead of time, and knew there was a ten-twenty showin' of GG. So, I went to it.

That was a pretty good movie. Best use of gummi bears in a film, ever, too.

Went to Lufkin with my younger nephew today for Halloween shoppin', lunch & a movie.

TMR was Plan A, and we got there in time for it.

I liked it, though I hate the way it ended as if a sequel is a sure thing. Too many movies do that. Whatever happened to just tellin' a good story? This one does that, but it didn't stop soon enough.

Startin' the fourth season of The Walking Dead on Netflix Instant tonight. Not sure what the next movie will be...

This is regularly namechecked alongside 3 Days of the Condor and The Conversation when people talk about major 1970s paranoia thrillers, starring the luxuriantly-coiffed Warren Beatty. This one is really interesting to consider in its original cultural context, filmed approximately a decade after the death of JFK, following by MLK, RFK, and the attempted assassination of George Wallace (and Watergate now an ongoing concern). The plot is purposefully obscure, which works to the movie's favour to an extent (you don't spend too much time wondering why these completely-successful assassins decide to gratuitously murder a bunch of witnesses who are completely unaware they saw anything, thereby calling attention to themselves), and there's a lot of great cinematography (the bookending images, especially, really stand out). There's a couple of edits that I thought were a bit jarring, though one of them is simply VFX-related, so obviously it's not going to be as smooth as a modern film would be in that regard. Beatty virtually carries the whole show here, with everybody else little more than extended cameos (I had meant to comment when I reviewed The Graduate earlier about the presence of William Daniels, known to my generation, of course, as Mr. Feeny, here merely a 40something).

109. Moonrise Kingdom (A+)

I saw Moonrise twice in theatres, and I believe I watched it once on Blu-ray on my own, before two occasions where I watched it with other people as part of my mission to proselytize for this movie; this is the second of those latter occasions, with my friends Stephanie and Stephanie (they both immediately started fawning over the dog when he first showed up; I struggled to keep a straight face*). I expect I'd grow tired of most films after watching them five times over the course of a bit more than two years, but this was my favourite film of 2012, and it's highly rewatchable. Wes Anderson packs so much detail into his sets, etc. that it's easy to pick up new things (this was the first time I noticed that the field Sam runs into is called the Lightning Field). It's astonishing that none of Anderson's films have been nominated for the art direction Oscar, let alone won.

* This film has a ton of great lines, but the dog's death occasions my favourite exchange: "Was he a good dog?" "Who's to say? But he didn't deserve to die." The cliché thing would be for Sam to say that he was, but Sam is so philosophical that he instead declines comment on the ground that he's not sure anyone can assess that.

I went to see Moonrise Kingdom when I still worked for the Alamo Drafthouse. In the years since South Lamar opened, that movie holds the distinction of sellin' the most tickets for that location (it was the only Drafthouse in Austin showin' the movie, too).

The seventh of Ang Lee's films that I've seen (in release order, the third), an adaptation of a novel by Daniel Woodrell, who also wrote the source material for Winter's Bone, among others. He's the official literary spokesperson for the Missouri Ozarks. This is a Civil War film set in the bloody internecine fighting in Missouri and Kansas, where small groups of irregulars from both sides do battle, not really accomplishing much beyond killing each other most of the time. This is easily the best performance I've seen from Tobey Maguire as an actor (pop singer Jewel also does a good job), though the show is stolen by Jeffrey Wright as a freed slave who fights with the Confederate militia. This character's existence is confusing at first, and he spends much of the movie with pained expressions whenever it becomes very apparent that the company he's in is largely composed of racists. This comes to a head after his former master, who freed him and remained his friend, is killed, and Holt (Wright's character) comments that he now feels free, since while he loved the man as a friend, being his friend really wasn't much different from being his slave, in terms of what it asked of him. Lee and his longtime screenwriter do a great job of depicting the complexities of life in the remote Missouri countryside, and how people end up on different sides. I especially like the way the movie doesn't end with the expected shootout between Maguire and co. and his main rival throughout the film (Jonathan Rhys-Myers).

The local independent theatre is doing a series of showings of those films of Stanley Kubrick's that are adapted from novels, this being the inaugural one (I've seen all of the remaining films before apart from the final one, Eyes Wide Shut). I was curious, going in, what an adaptation of Nabokov's most famous/infamous novel would look like when made pursuant to the Hays Code. The result calls to mind Karl Marx's famous observation: first as tragedy, then as farce.

I don't think it would have been possible to film Nabokov's novel in anything like its original form -- indeed, it barely got published -- perhaps not even now, in many respects. That said, the final product is so different, tonally, that I find it extremely difficult to make any sort of meaningful comparison with the source. Kubrick has more or less turned the story into a black comedy, with Peter Sellers mugging his way through multiple disguises in what is either, depending on your point of view, a reprisal of his gimmick in The Mouse That Roared or a dry run for Dr. Strangelove. Lolita herself (well-played by Sue Lyon, incidentally) has been aged up by two years or so, and while this doesn't remotely excuse anything that Humbert does, it nonetheless has major implications for their dynamic (the film's comedy also tends to give her the upper hand, so to speak, over Humbert, for the sake of humour, and probably, audience toleration).

Having seen the movie, I was motivated to flip through Nabokov's original draft of the screenplay for this movie (which was almost entirely rewritten by Kubrick and the producer for the finished version, though Nabokov retained sole credit, and got an Oscar nomination for it; I'd kind of like to see what he would have said had he won), which is included in one of the Library of America collected editions of his writing (alongside its source novel, Pnin, and Pale Fire). Content-wise it's easy to see why this was never filmed, and even if that hadn't been an issue, it's overly talky, but I think the loss of virtually all of Humbert's narrative voice is a big blow to both the character and the story.

In the end, this is a well-acted and fairly funny (if extremely broad) farce. I wasn't really sure how to grade it, but even separating it from the source material as much as possible, I don't think it can be considered a great film.

A couple of years ago, a friend of mine suggested I watch WB, 'cause Jennifer Lawrence. I bought a copy on DVD for cheap last spring, and forgot I had it for awhile. Finally popped it in last night, and that was a pretty good white trash drama. It has a few name, familiar actors, but most of 'em are locals to the film location in Missouri.

Kinda wish I had listened to my friend sooner about watchin' it.

Found Michelle Rodriguez's first movie on Netflix Instant, watchin' it now.

I Know That Voice - On Demand - I have to state up front that when I chose this movie, I thought I was choosing the movie "In A World." So every now and again, someone produces a "behind" the scenes of Voice Over Actors. They always talk about the same thing, Mel Blanc, how they aren't in it for the fame, how close they are and are in general a love fest for voice actors. This one was spearheaded by John DiMaggio who is the voice of Bender from Futurama. Of all the people spotlighted in this documentary, I think John DiMaggio is the least talented. Sure his Bender is great but every single other character sounds exactly the same. Why he is held in high regard, I have no idea. Almost all the other voice people are way more talented and actually do other voices. I always like to see some of the faces behind the voices but otherwise nothing really new here.

Chef - On Demand - I so love this movie, I think it is Jon Favreau's best movie...well outside Ironman. The story was fantastic, the acting was stellar, even from the kid playing his son. Only in a movie can your ex-wife be Sofia Vergara and your girlfriend be Scarlett Johansson. I loved how they visualized Twitter in the movie. Highly recommend this movie, especially if you love movies and food.

In A World - Netflix on Apple TV - A few days later I finally got to see the movie I intended to watch. Found it on Netflix by scrolling through, can I say how much I hate Netflix interface. It is just terrible, makes it real hard to find a movie.

In A Word is a fantastic look at the cutthroat movie trailer voice over industry. Lake Bell wrote and directed it and man is it fantastic. The movie was funny and endearing and just really well done. She has a real unique voice, I hope that she gets to write and direct again real soon.
