Watched CF Sunday night while I still had the house to myself.

Bruce was a kid who loved to tango, until bullies made him eat the sequins off his own shirt.

As an adult, he's a schlub who stays in his comfort zone, but when he founds out his cute new boss at work also enjoys to tango, he decides to go back to the dancin', and makes new friends along the way.

Nick Frost was fun in this movie. Ian McShane was hilarious as his bitter tango teacher, Chris O'Dowd was especially gross as the lewd co worker who has his sights on Rashida Jones as the new boss from America.

Simon Pegg even makes a brief, non verbal cameo.

I quite enjoyed the movie, it had some good laughs in it, and a fella of Nick Frost's size dancin' a tango...its a good gag.

Tank crews are underrepresented in war movies to an extent that may seem surprising at first, but really isn't when you consider the difficulties and limitations posed by the vehicle on both the story and filming. Fury is the best cinematic depiction of tank combat I've seen on film, best captured in an amazing sequence that pits three US tanks against a single German Tiger I. In the reviews of this movie I've seen a lot of discussion around the conflicting aspects of realism and over-the-top war movie combat present in this, and I think that's a legitimate point, but honestly I didn't especially care. I thought the final battle war superb filmmaking, even if it's quite unrealistic.

For all the technical prowess on display, which in considerable, the most interesting sequence is the lengthy visit the soldiers pay to a residence where two German civilian women live. Coming on the heels of a sequence where Brad Pitt's character insists that Logan Lerman commit a war crime by executing a prisoner, it's unclear exactly how far Pitt is interesting in going (even if, in the back of one's mind, there's a sense that no studio film is going to turn even an antihero into a rapist; the movie manages to raise the concern, which is a feat), and we get a gamut of interesting emotions on both sides put onscreen. Also, Shia LaBeouf didn't annoy me in this movie, which was a first.

The movie that, together with Silence of the Lambs, turned all our pop culture serial killers into theatrical theologians. I recall having previously watched this on cable many years ago, and, somewhat to my surprise, after watching the movie it's mainly just the swearing where edits would be needed. Unlike its many imitators, the movie depends almost entirely on implication for its various gruesome murders, letting the audiences' imaginations do their work for them. It's interesting to contrast this with Fincher's later Zodiac, which feels like a diametrically opposite approach to the serial killer genre from the highly stylized and macabre style pioneered here.

From the vantage of almost two decades later, there are some interesting aspects to this movie positioned at the midpoint of the 1990s. The view of urban decay, for instance, which in one sense feels a bit out of step from the sunnier recollections we generally have of the 1990s, though at the time Rudy Giuliani was just in the process of clearing the prostitutes out of Time Square and the legacy of the 1970s-1980s was still lingering in people's minds. There's also the extended argument between the two detectives about the use of the library rental evidence and access to John Doe's apartment being invalidated for improper search reasons, which, in the age of the NSA bulk data collection program, seems rather quaint.

My main reservation about the movie is Brad Pitt's performance, which often strikes the right note, but there are several times where I wondered how convincing he was in the part (or whether he was convincing and that was just the nature of the character he was playing). Certainly, acting opposite Morgan Freeman at the top of his game is a tough order for anyone. Kevin Spacey, once he makes his appearance (which is one of the best villain intros I can recall), is in top form.

    116. Left Behind (2014) ★ - Worst movie of the year. Nothing will even come close
    117. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) ★★★ - Quite a good film, but there's just something missing from these movies that I can't put my finger on.
    118. Into the Storm (2014) ★★ - Not as bad as I thought. The special effects are really good.

    114. Rosemary's Baby (A+)

To celebrate Halloween, two movies about the gradual mental disintegration of profoundly isolated women, though the films differ considerably on whether this is all in their heads or not. In the latter category is this, the last of the "major" Roman Polanski films that I hadn't seen, and Mia Farrow's most prominent film role outside of her work with Woody Allen (Polanski and Allen, heh; she has an unerring ability to find men of questionable character).

The film is a master class in gradually building tension, as well as the efficacy of making use of the audience's imaginations instead of relying on special effects (especially ones that would almost certainly have been inadequate; necessity being the mother of invention and all that). It's also quite an interesting feminist statement; for most of the running time the most horrifying thing about it is how Rosemary is easily manoeuvred into a position of helplessness by those around her, and this is pretty clearly gendered.

There's one bit in the climax which is more than a bit camp now, particularly as I'd seen the parody in South Park's "Woodland Critter Christmas" first, but other than that the film has aged exceptionally well.

    115. Black Swan (A-)

My friend Stephanie is a huge ballet aficionado, but had never gotten around to seeing this movie when it came out, so I rewatched this for the first time since I saw it in theatres (incidentally, revisiting BoxOfficeMojo, this film really had a remarkable run; over $300 million worldwide for a ballet horror movie with a $13 million budget). I believe I rated this a B+ back in 2010, but I think it does warrant an A-; it's not a deep movie, but Aronofsky's use of atmosphere and intricate visual style is remarkable, and Natalie Portman gives a tremendous physical performance (though my friend remarked that she had a hard time believing someone that unstable would have gotten as far in this profession as she has).

Brad Bird's dynamic superhero film is as impressive now as it was ten years ago. It's been several years since I watched this, but I remember pretty much the whole thing beat for beat, which shows how memorable it was.

    RIP Elizabeth Pena.

    119. The Babadook ★★1/2 - Some great acting on a low budget, but it never really goes anywhere. I'm impressed they got this together on Kickstarter though.

Glad to watch a film that was indeed worth the hype. What I found great about this comedy was it used situations to make things funny. Too many comedies rely on just using Fuck in an awkward or embarrassing situation and rely on the actor deliver it funny. Just saying Fuck isn't really funny in and of itself(Melissa McCarthy in The Heat).

I rented Gabriel Iglesias's latest comedy special, filmed in San Francisco, from Hasting's the other day.

Watched the theatrical cut Sunday afternoon with my younger nephew. Lot of laughs, we both enjoyed it.

I watched the extended cut, on the same DVD, last night. There wasn't much of a difference, except for a story about Germans in the audience when he was performin' in India. That was the only difference I spotted.

Still gonna count it as separate movies, though.

There are cameos from Ron White and Tommy Chong in the openin' bit, too.

My friend Stephanie came over to watch this movie right after her ballet class, fittingly enough. In the course of watching it, she commented that she interested in seeing the differences in dance styles 60+ years ago, as well as how you'd never see ballerinas as curvy as Moira Shearer is in professional companies today. I bought this movie on DVD some years ago (back before I'd started buying Blu-ray disks exclusively), but I believe this is my first rewatch since the initial viewing, so I didn't remember much about it apart from the ending.

As with Powell and Pressburger's other movies, the sumptuousness of the production design sometimes threatens to overwhelm everything else. The movie looks absolutely stunning; we lost something when Technicolour fell out of use. When Aronofsky made Black Swan he had access to an array of sophisticated computer effects to merge Natalie Portman's reasonably capable amateurism with professional dance doubles, tools Powell and Pressburger obviously didn't have here; hence the casting of Shearer, an actual ballerina who can also act, and execute the numerous elaborate dance sequences. Chief among these the nearly 20 minute central ballet, which goes from being basically a filmed stage performance to a hallucinatory representation of the ballet complete with the best editing tricks available at the time.

Shearer's quite good, but the best acting performance is, of course, Anton Walbrook, who was also the centrepiece of my favourite Powell/Pressburger film, The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (his big monologue in that is one of the best pieces of film acting I've ever seen, helpfully married to some great writing). On a story level, the uber-rigid choice between work and family does feel a bit forced, but I think it ultimately fits with the operatic (or perhaps that should be balletic) nature of the story being told.

Incidentally, the lack of an Oscar nomination for cinematography for this film has to go down as one of the more baffling omissions. It's not like the Academy didn't see the film; it got five nominations (including Picture), and two wins, for art direction and score. And Jack Cardiff had won the previous year for Black Narcissus, by the same directors, so they knew who he was too. And this was when there were two cinematography categories, one for colour and one for black-and-white.

After an October that was quite light on new releases I was interested in, this weekend has two. Big Hero 6 is no The Incredibles (nor quite on the level of the best films of the Second Renaissance), but it's a lot of fun, and has superb animation.

    119. Interstellar (A)

Discussed more in the dedicated review thread, but overall I think Nolan has produced an ambitious and worthwhile sci-fi film.

I vaguely remember reading a positive review of this back in 2009 when it first came out, but I never had the opportunity to see it at the time. I noticed it was on Netflix, so I took the opportunity to become fully up-to-date on the filmography of Cary Fukunaga, whose work I thought was easily the most impressive thing about HBO's True Detective. This is a story about a group of immigrants making their way northward to the US, where the main focus isn't on the final border crossing, but on the various dangers getting there through Mexico, which the movie augments by featuring one of its characters being pursued by members of a Mexican gang whose leader he killed.

That latter plot at times feels a bit sensationalized compared to the realism of the setting and filming style, but it largely works, though a couple of the characters act in ways that seem mind-boggingly stupid (the aforesaid gang leader kills this guy's girlfriend in the course of planning to rape her, then straight-up tells him this, and then takes him and one other guy on a mission to rob a train, in the course of which the gang leader decides to rape somebody else right in front of the guy while he's armed; unsurprisingly, he is killed; the near-rape-victim, who serves as the other main character, takes a couple of actions that would have Bella Swan rolling her eyes). That said, it's quite interesting (and, at 96 minutes, very efficiently filmed), with a very unsparing look at the introduction of children into Mexico's criminal gangs.

Peter Weir's 1985 film about a police detective hiding out amongst the Amish is one part thriller, one part romance, and one part culture-clash dramedy, and merges the three genres pretty well, though I think the thriller part is the least interesting by far (though the climax is well-done). I like the balance the films strikes in depicting the Amish society, which is not without its troubling aspects (the talk about shunning, other little moments that make it seem a bit stifling), but also shows a clear and strong sense of community. The most interesting scene to me is the scene where a group of Amish are confronted by some jerkass tourists who enjoy harassing them, which they attempt to respond to non-violently, until Harrison Ford beats the crap out of the lead asshole. It's a neat little interrogation of the audience's own desire for cathartic violence, and demonstrates why the obvious attraction between Ford and Kelly McGillis' character would never work out -- Ford can appreciate many aspects of Amish society, as shown by the barn-raising scene, but he ultimately doesn't belong there, and she'd be no better-off in his world.

A very fun animated super hero film from Pixar loosely adapting the Marvel Comics recent and lesser known team of Big Hero 6. It was lots of fun and while being super kiddie-fied I recommend it for fans of animation &/or Pixar as well as Marvel Comics.

So, yes--stay all the way through to the credits.

Ah, David Lean epics, where the movie's already over three hours long and you decide, why not throw in an overture too? I watched this a few years ago on DVD, but this is a Blu-Ray viewing. It remains an impressive production in terms of sheer scale (in particular, depicting the Russian Revolution and the ensuing Civil War), though I don't think it's an engaging as Lawrence of Arabia, despite what is in some ways a more emotionally-fraught story. I think my biggest issue is Omar Sharif's performance as Zhivago; I don't think he's wholly suitable for the part (at one point Lara declares that Yuri "will never leave Russia", a declaration that really comes out of nowhere, as the character has never really evinced that sort of romantic nationalism; the poetic side of Zhivago is the part that I think suffers in this version, as compared to the doctor and lover).

I was really disappointed in this movie. The acting was good and Keaton was great for the role, but the plot left a lot to be desired and that original score of just drums was annoying. Also, there were scenes where the Camera was just pointing at empty rooms and I was starting to get bored. For example, there was a scene where the Camera was just pointing to an allyway with nothing going on for a good 5 minutes, but it felt a lot longer than that. They call this a dark comedy, but I don't think I or the Audience I saw the movie with laughed. I'm sure this will be nominated for best picture because everyone seems to love it, but maybe this was a film that went over my head.

It was enjoyable, but I can't tell you why I enjoyed it. Usually I hate movies that I can't figure out what the point of the journey has been. I'm also not a big fan of fantasy that has no basis in reality. But somehow with Life of Pi, this movie having both of those elements didn't irk me as much as usual.

It's easy to see why Joe Johnston was picked to direct Captain America: The First Avenger (which, incidentally, I think makes him the only director to work in two different "eras" of the superhero movie: the post-Tim Burton Batman period that never went anywhere, and the current one) on the basis of this film. The visual effects on the flying are pretty decent for the period, though obviously they don't hold a candle to today. Billy Campbell is a fairly bland lead, but the supporting cast is a lot of fun, especially Timothy Dalton as the Errol Flynn-inspired bad guy. And the younger Jennifer Connelly was a real knockout (even if her character kind of straddles the line between being a superfluous love interest/damsel in distress and having an actual role in the story).

    124. Birdman (N/A)

The first of two highly acclaimed 2014 releases that I was able to see in theatres for the first time this week. My one-sentence review would be that as an All About Eve-style story of clashing egos behind the scenes of a stage production, it's a lot of fun; I'm less clear on what I think about any deeper messages it might be trying to convey (my preferred reading is that everyone is basically full of themselves). Probably requires another viewing on that score. Structurally, the movie kick off with a number of supporting characters who kind of fade out by the second half -- Andrea Riseborough, Naomi Watts, even Edward Norton to a great extent, though Norton's hilarious performance is so standout in the first hour or so that it's easier to overlook that. Norton and Michael Keaton are the acting highlights (it's quite funny hearing Keaton do his own parody of Christian Bale's "Batman voice"), but everybody's quite good here. One of the other things people have really talked about with regarding to this movie is Emmanuel Lubezki's cinematography, which has been set up in such a way as to create the illusion that the movie has been shot in a single take -- Lubezki's command of the camera is legendary by now, and there's plenty of great imagery here, but the "single take" thing is gimmicky, and some of the contortions the camera does in the course of this are a bit distracting.

    125. Whiplash (A)

An artist being driven to the physical and mental limit in the pursuit of greatness is hardly a new story (indeed, I've watched two movies about that featuring ballerinas in the last months), but I've never seen it told quite like Damien Chazelle does here, in the world of jazz drumming for an elite New York conservatory. There's one or two bumps in story (I'm think mainly of a particular incident in the third act that takes the movie's depictions of physical strain a bit beyond the purely credible), but it's overall quite riveting, anchored by Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons. Teller seems to ping-pong between fascinating indie films and really dull mainstream comedies at the moment; this is probably his best performance that I've seen, and different from previous characters he's played. A lot of stories about a kid driven to the brink by a sadistic instructor would position him as the "ordinary" guy beforehand, but the movie isn't afraid to portray him as kind of a dick, and it seems less like Fletcher's influence than something he was already kind of looking for an excuse to do beforehand. Simmons is, to use an overused phrase, a force of nature in the movie. An Oscar nomination seems almost a foregone conclusion, and assuming they actually watch their screeners, it will be a tough task for anybody else to beat him. In contrast to Birdman, I think the main theme of this movie is a lot easier to formulate debate around, though that doesn't mean it's simplistic. On top of the questions around how we're meant to view Fletcher's methods for achieving technical virtuosity, one wonders where exactly the creative process fits into Fletcher's worldview; this sort of drill-sergeant behaviour doesn't seem especially condusive to that.

Also: Fletcher berates his students will all manner of racial and gender slurs, but, especially notable given that his classes are at least 50% black, he never uses the n-word. Is this the movie being too afraid/wise to go there, or Fletcher being too afraid/wise to go there?

Took my younger nephew to see the latest superhero movie at the cheap matinee in Nacogdoches today.

We both quite liked it, and have been quotin' bits of it to each other since dinner. He's already hopin' for a sequel, too.

Out of a nearly sold out show, he & I were the only ones who stayed for the post-credits bones scene.

'Feast', the short that played before the movie, was cute, too.

Up next on my list of stuff to see - Interstellar! But I'm gonna have to go alone, since no one else wants to see it with me.
