206. Catch A Christmas Star (✩½) - Live TV - A pop star returns to her hometown and rekindles a romance with an old flame who's now a widowed dad. Very little to do with Christmas other than it takes place around that time of year. Pretty bad by TV movie standards, but it had Shannon Elizabeth.

207. A Star for Christmas (✩✩) - Live TV - A young woman struggling to manage her bakery meets a movie star who's shooting a film in her town. Very little to do with Christmas other than it takes place around that time of year. Pretty bad by TV movie standards, but it had Briana Evigan, daughter of Greg Evigan.

208. Let It Snow (✩✩) - Live TV - A woman tries to save a vacation resort from her dad who's a developer and wants the property. Stars Candace Cameron and Alan Thicke as the evil-in that-lightharted-christmasy-sort-of-way dad. Saw it just for Cameron. Otherwise, it's a pretty forgettable TV movie.

209. The Christmas Ornament (✩✩) - Live TV - I don't even know what this one was about but it had Kellie Martin and Jewel Staite. ...and a Christmas ornament.

210. A Very Merry Mix-Up (✩✩½) - Live TV - A woman is supposed to meet her fiancé's parents at Christmas before he arrives, but through a series of events, ends up at the wrong house and bonds with this other family (they have the same last name and a son with the same name as her fiancé). Predictable and not great, but it wasn't that bad either. Stars Alicia Witt.

Regarding Batman Returns... I noticed that Selina Kyle had a neon sign in her apartment that said "Hello There". Then when she first put on the Catwoman costume, some of the letters were obscured and it looked like it read "Hell here". Never noticed that before.

 

[Starbreaker]

The Spectacular Now ★★★ - It's good. I think I would have really enjoyed this movie a lot more 7-8 years ago. It's well acted and engaging the entire time.

Lee Daniels' The Butler ★★★1/2 - It was a little unevenly paced, but I really enjoyed it. I almost think it would have been better if they hadn't cast the presidents with well-known actors, though. That kind of took me out of the story... and the epilogue is probably too long. Other than that, I really enjoyed it. Oprah got snubbed by the Golden Globe committee.

Mud ★★★ - Not as good as I thought it was going to be. Maybe the hype spoiled it for me. The kids in the movie were great, but it was just a little too slow for my tastes. I fell asleep watching it a couple of nights in a row. I think Take Shelter is the better film from Nichols.

A very smartly written quirky period piece film set during the 60's that focuses on two tweens and their outcast social situation but finding themselves together. At times I wasn't sure if I should admire the story or turn it off cause it felt more than a bit awkward really with the amount of physicality they showed a 12&13 yr old engaging in. Being a dog person I also can't say I liked how Snoopy was treated. I'll have to tell a friend she'll have to not watch it. Dogs=dead is a no-no for her in a film. Ed Norton, Bill Murray, Bruce Willis and Frances McDormand all perform admirably and bring to life this island community a bit detached from "normal" and adding to the quirkiness inherent throughout the film.

97. The Thirteenth Tale (C+)

BBC2 adaptation of a moderately popular Diane Setterfield novel from midway through the last decade. The film has an exceptionally good cast, including Vanessa Redgrave, Olivia Colman, and Sophie Turner (the latter being the main reason I tuned in); but the story frankly isn't terribly cinematic, and the direction, while competent, never really conjures up the sort of modern Gothic atmosphere the story really needs (not helped by the very short 90-minute running time). I do enjoy seeing Turner play some roles very different from Sansa Stark.

98. The Great Gatsby (B+)

I was not expecting to like this quite as much as I did. From the moment it was announced, and especially as the budget and production images started to come out, this seemed a real mismatch of director and material. But, much to my surprise, Luhrmann's hyperkinetic, splashy style does suit the material. Luhrmann is basically a creator of opera in a cinematic guise, and he turns Fitzgerald's fairly simple themes into an operatic story of sweeping emotions and big gestures. It will not be show in film schools like Gatsby is regularly assigned to high school classes, but so what?

The main problem, interestingly, is the main instance of Luhrmann attempting to humanize Fitzgerald's archetypal/symbolic characters, namely, Daisy. The book is fairly straightforward about Gatsby's vision of Daisy being nothing more than a mirage, but the first two-thirds of Luhrmann's film paint Daisy far more sympathetically than Fitzgerald ever did, which makes the final third, where she largely reverts to her book form in order to keep the plot on track, seem rather disconnected from what came before.

Also, I really want that white suit that Leo has in this movie.

The sequel to Piranha 3-D from a few years ago that was a surprisingly modest hit. And itself not all that bad considering the genre. It's not that the story, as overly simple as it is, that is bad, it's that they play it as a spoof instead of a more horror entrenched film. Focusing on the blatant nudity instead. So like some sequels do this one took the wrong lessons from the first and focused on the wrong thing and instead of making at least as modestly enjoyable film this next time it felt like the DDVD supremely low brow flick it is. I can't feign ignorance, I expected bad and got it.



So I ended the year on a down note but watched nearly the same as last year, which was 102. Slightly less than 2011 which was 111 so I think I've about found an average of films per year I'm taking in that are new to me or re-watched for the 1st time in over 10 years.

211. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013) (✩✩✩✩) - Theatre - It had a great message about getting out of your head and learning to live life but the execution was a little off. The story was a bit unfocussed and meandered a little too much. It felt like the trailer filled in with more padding. This is more of an observation than a complaint though. The movie was funny, poignant and Ben Stiller was great and brought his usual brand of humor to the role. Reading more about the movie, I see that this project has been in development limbo since the early 90s. First Jim Carrey was attached, then other names came along like Mike Myers, Owen Wilson, Sasha Baron Cohen and Johnny Depp, all of whom would have been good too. Another thing… I was surprised to see that the theatre I was at was nearly empty. Only seven people were there, while The Wolf of Wall Street was sold out.

212. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (1947) (✩✩✩½) - Download - I found out that there was a 1947 version, so I decided to watch that as well. Both movies are based on the same short story but this one is a little different. The title character is similar to the contemporary version in that he tunes out from time to time and lives in his own rich fantasies, but in this movie, he's engaged to be married, then meets a pretty woman and finds himself embroiled in a murder conspiracy. That's what shakes him out of his mundane life and idle fantasies in this movie. It stars Danny Kaye. I've never heard of him but with all the fantasy sequences featuring a lot of song and dance, I figured he was a real showman and that this movie was a vehicle for that and it looks like I was right. I'd say he's talented but a lot of his routines were pretty dated. Also, I think this was the first time I saw Boris Karloff without his Frankenstein make-up.

213. The Wolf of Wall Street (✩✩✩✩½) - Theatre - A very good movie about the excesses of Wall Street. DiCaprio, Jonah Hill and the rest of the bunch brought an enormous amount of fun and energy to the film and the first hour and a half went by quite fast. I can't think of anything I don't like right now. Comments I've read say this is a man's movie and I hadn't thought of it that way but they're probably right given the hoards of strippers and hookers throughout. And I gotta say I loved every bit of it. The sexual component was well done. Dirty, funny and full of the same excess as the rest of the movie. I've also got Matthew McConaughey's cadence in my head right now. That scene encapsulates the kind of enthusiams for money and excess featured in the film and it's just plain catchy. I heard that McConaughey improvised it. Obviously Scorsese liked it too because it plays during the end credits. Another fun bit of info… Apparently the cast actually snorted crushed vitamine pills when the scenes called for cocaine use. And yeah, there was a lot of that too.

This concludes my movie viewing for 2013. Only 213 movies, down from last year's 360. I'd say that's an improvement.

Orson Welles' final theatrical feature, a free-form documentary about the nature of illusion and con artistry. A fascinating experiment, eschewing traditional documentary structures, it's consistently interesting, but I don't think it ever soars. It's held together by Welles' commanding presence in front of the camera. The man was a talent, albeit one that Hollywood never really knew what to do with.

100. The African Queen (B+)

Bogart in Technicolour. I don't think I've ever seen that before, and honestly, I don't think it suits him; there was an actor made for black and white.

This movie made both of the AFI's top 100 of all time lists, and if that's the measuring stick I think it's considerably overrated. Bogart and Hepburn have nice chemistry as the leads, but as a romance it never gets very far, and as an adventure film it's on the tepid side much of the time. On the whole it's a nice package, but I really don't find it exceptional.

Monsters University - Blu Ray - Watched this on New Years Eve with my two sons. This is a prequel done right. It's funny how a movie can make familiar characters new and exciting. One of the best thing Pixar does is give you a movie with a message without seaming to beat you over the head with it. Some people may disagree but I liked it better then Monsters Inc.
