Having failed to kill Sandra Bullock, God had two hours to take a shot at killing Robert Redford.
This is the second feature from J.C. Chandor, whose Margin Call got good reviews a few years ago (and an Oscar nomination), though I never did get around to seeing it. Here we're going super-minimalist, with exactly one actor (Redford), who has barely any dialogue and no backstory. This is as pure a survival story as has ever been put to film, all about man versus the elements. It is consistently watchable and very tense, a tribute to Redford's star power, though I'm not sure it has any replay value.

I was skeptical coming into this movie. I heard it lauded so much by the critics and even the whole gurenteed to win Best Picture (It's that time of year I suppose) and I was ready to rank this movie as the most overrated of the year. Well, I came out of it in tears, something I don't do during movies all that often.
The acting from Chiwetel Ejiofor and Fassbender was great, and, while the film was graphic, it really brought home the point of Slavery in America and how dark a period this was in our history. You set through all that brutility, and when you get to the end of the film, you realize it was all worth it. I wouldn't be surprised if this wins Best Picture, even though I really want to see American Hustle. It's a better film than Gravity, which while I liked, it was more for the experience than an actual story.

My brother in law rented a few movies over the weekend, and one of the rentals included the extended cut of We're the Millers.
I saw it when it came out in theaters last summer, and thought it was pretty funny. The extended cut is almost the exact same movie, so its still pretty funny. The only changes I noticed involved extra bits of Ed Helms in his office. And I think there may have been a bit at the campground with Nick Offerman & Kathryn Hahn that I didn't remember from seein' it at the theater. Still no nudity from Jennifer Aniston, though.
Ah, well...
Super excited about Netflix Instant addin' the second season of American Horror Story, so I'm startin' that tonight since I missed it when it was on FX.

This 80's Bill Murray should be considered a cult classic if it's not already. Heck I'll stretch it to Modern Classic if I could. I count films in my list entirely new to me OR not seen in a decade or more. Scrooged falls into the latter category. I had forgotten how much I liked this movie. It was on sale over Black Friday for $3 so I picked it up recalling a few fond scenes. Having re-watched it I can't believe the material I'd forgotten. A really fun film full of Murray at his best along with Karen Allen, Bobcat and others. Not to mention, hey the woman who plays The Goonies Mom has another minor role! Spotting her in minor 80's roles in kinda something I've noticed a few times.
So, 100 films with a few more weeks to go in the year. I guess Hobbit 2 will be my next theatrical film.

Rewatched this last night with my friend after some exam studying. Still one of the best adventure movies ever made, with Errol Flynn's Robin Hood being one of the standards by which you judge screen heroism in the old-school style. I've got this on Blu-ray now, and the film looks even more beautiful; that old Technicolour pageantry looks marvelous.

One of the first cinematic AIDS dramas I can recall in recent history (AIDS receded from the movie theaters much like it largely has from the public debate since the mid-1990s), a biopic of the founder of the titular buyers club of Dallas, distributing unapproved medications from the mid-1980s until his death in 1992. The film has attracted considerable attention for its performances, and it is deserved: Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto are both terrific (the supporting cast, most notably Jennifer Garner, are also in good form). Leto, in particular, has been collecting most of the supporting acting awards so far, and has one scene in particular that is devastatingly good (credit for that moment also goes to James DuMont, the actor playing his unnamed father). Beyond its performances, the story is very effective on a personal level; its treatment of the controversies around AZT and the FDA's role in the AIDS crisis isn't terribly nuanced, which is too bad.

Decided to try the Pinhead franchise after seein' that the movies are available on Netflix. The first one, though...I dunno. Not in a rush to watch any more of 'em.
Bruce Bruce's stand up special was pretty funny.
I still haven't watched El Mariachi, but I have seen its two sequels. Both of 'em were just over the top silly action, with the occasional subtitle.
The GLOW documentary was surprisingly touchin'. I remember my older siblings watchin' it when we were kids. I missed seein' the documentary the one night it played at the Alamo Drafthouse - Ritz last summer, with the director there for a Q&A. Had to work that night...
Missed The World's End when it opened at the Alamo Drafthouse, too. My last shift was on a Wednesday and the movie opened the very next day...so, when Hasting's had their "Rent One, Get One" special Friday, it was one of the ones I picked to watch. Freakin' awesome, too. My favorite of the "trilogy," for sure.
The Iron Man / Hulk team-up movie was disappointin'. The animation looked cheap, the story was weak, and the dialogue sucked all kinds of ass.
Watched the killer whales at Sea World documentary this mornin'...and now I have no desire to ever give Sea World a penny of my money.
My nephews have been watchin' Ultimate Spider-Man cartoons all day since then, but I found a few other documentaries I want to watch in the next few days. And I still need to finish the second season of American Horror Story: Asylum...
Despicable Me 2 - Blu Ray - Watched it with my two boys tonight, they loved it. However for me it was mostly Meh. There were a few funny scenes, but overall not as good as the first one.

W: Josh Brolin as the 43rd President of the US, George W. Bush, led Oliver Stone film about the life and first term Presidency of GWB as seen through the liberal prism. The film is wrought with conjecture and assumption which hurts it + it's played for laughs cause that's how Democrats spent years playing him up...as a clown. It's also taking aim at Christianity and treating faith with him as being a zealot. If Stone got anything close to correct I wouldn't dispute it would be his younger days. Even liberals must've recognized how silly Bush as clown was once Stone had Brolin playing the role so loose, it didn't set the box office on fire.
I don't pretend GWB's Presidency didn't have some flaws but they were not made in a vacuum(as this film would suggest) and his second term was him reaching across the aisle to work with a Democrat led House and Senate so policy matters were not entirely his alone.
It's saved the grade by solid acting by E.Banks, J.Cromwell and Toby Jones to name a few with the material they were given.
The joke is the film. Can't wait for 2017 when the O movie comes out. I'm sure he'll be painted as a saint and redeemer of lost children by Hollywood.
Didn't realize this was an A&E TV movie until I started watching it. It's OK. It's about the Green River Killer and the interviews with Ted Bundy that helped profile Gary Ridgway. It's not a good movie. Bruce Greenwood gives a good performance and Cary Elwes as Ted Bundy is creeeeeeeepy similar. It's just too directionless to be anything worth rewatching.

NiRWB is a talkin' heads documentary about horror films from the birth of American cinema to post 9/11. Mostly directors givin' their opinion of other works while talkin' about some of their own contributions.
TM was an interestin' drama about two Army men, an officer & a sergeant, who have to notify families of the loss of their loved ones. Starrin' Woody Harrelson and Ben Foster, it was well worth watchin'. I kept meanin' to get to it...finally did.
Talhotblond is a documentary about a case in New York of an online love triangle that ended in murder. A middle aged man poses as a teen online, starts a relationship with a teen girl online, and she winds up startin' a relationship online with one of the guy's younger coworkers, which resulted in the murder of the younger guy. And durin' the investigation, its discovered that the teen girl was really the middle aged mother of a teenager who didn't know about how her image was bein' used online.

There's a director's cut that eliminates many of the jump scares -- not sure if that's the version you saw -- but it's only marginally better as a movie.
