This has become a cult classic for people of my generation, but I didn't see it when it first came out in theatres. Henry Selick's early stop motion work is impressive (and it anticipates some of the aesthetic of Tim Burton's own entry in that genre, The Corpse Bride), but on a story level it never really grabs me, and if they were going to include music, it should be more memorable.
90. Vertigo (A)
Recently crowned the greatest film of all time in the decennial Sight & Sound poll, this was the Hitchcock's last collaboration with Jimmy Stewart, who gives one of his darkest performances. The film is both a thriller and a study in obsession, which has largely been read as Hitchcock's study of his own controlling tendencies toward actresses (the degree to which this was unconscious being debated). The latter aspect is exceptionally compelling; as a thriller the film is a bit odd, as Hitchcock abruptly dumps all the answers into the audience's lap in a voiceover with a quarter of the film still to go. This has the effect of making the film almost solely a study of Stewart's obsession for the rest of the run-time, until the final revelation. It's a somewhat curious narrative choice. I do find it interesting how, with the revelation, the movie's focus effectively switches from Stewart to Kim Novak; indeed, this is an excellent example of how a POV can be used to make you sympathize with a character who really doesn't deserve it, in the grand scheme of things.

Billy Jack was kinda dull...Netflix has the first sequel available, but at three hours long, I'm not in a rush to watch it.
TBBitWH is the second sequel of the rebooted franchise. Shelley Long and Gary Cole reprise their roles of Carol and Mike Brady, but the kid actors were all too old to continue. A series of what the fuck?! moments startin' with a lost lotto ticket lead the Brady Bunch to become the First Family, with Mike as the president & Carol as the vice president. Seriously, the fuck?!
TODT was a pretty good documentary about the Lithuanian basketball team sent to the Olympics in 1992. It gave a comprehensive history of the sport in Lithuania, as well as how the were exploited by the Soviet Union, up until the country's independence. And that the Grateful Dead helped the Lithuanian basketball team with a donations of cash & clothin' was kind of awesome.
HB was a nice biographical documentary about Harper Lee and her great American novel turned classic film, To Kill a Mockingbird.
Watched Jamie Foxx's standup from 2001, when he was just beginnin' his film career...too bad it wasn't that funny.
Blitz was a fairly decent suspense - ish movie with Jason Statham as a tough, abusive cop who is investigatin' a serial cop killer in London played by Game of Thrones's Littlefinger.
Lovelace had an impressive cast includin' Amanda Seyfried, Peter Sarsgaard, Chris Noth, Robert Patrick, James Franco & Sharon Stone, but it was a mediocre biopic of for the girl who rose to porn stardom as the star of Deep Throat.
BSS was a slow boil of a psychological thriller starrin' Tobey Jones. Not quite sure what I was watchin' by the time it was done.
I've got The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes playin' now...not too bad, if a bit more comical than I would expect from a Sherlock Holmes film.
There's a director's cut that eliminates many of the jump scares -- not sure if that's the version you saw -- but it's only marginally better as a movie.

The James Franco biopic about Aron Ralston the naturalist who ended up trapped between a Utah canyon wall and a boulder. He ultimately cut off is own arm at the elbow after.....127 Hours in order to survive. It was finely acted and Franco does a great job in his version of Castaway/I Am Legend, where the meat of the movie relies on him and him alone.

David O. Russell continues his hot streak, though on the whole I think this movie is merely warm -- a good film with great acting, but not on the level of the three previous films of his that I've seen. The main thing holding it back is the plot, which never truly becomes engrossing. On a scene-to-scene basis, however, it delivers some very good character interactions. The cast are all in top form, with the standouts being Amy Adams (never sexier) and Jennifer Lawrence (hilarious). Bale is fairly low-key, but effective; Cooper is more high intensity, akin to in his last work for Russell. The script and Jeremy Renner's take on a corrupt politician is fairly novel for cinema; he's almost inarguably the most pure-intentioned person in the film, and in it to attract jobs to his cit.

Does Bradley Cooper always play the crazy guy? I ask because I couldn't really see any difference between this character in American Hustle, and his character from last year's Silver Linings Playbook. Not that that's a bad thing because he was really good here, but it did seem a little jarring.
On a whole, I really liked this movie. The Plot was a little incoherent, but the character interactions were fantastic. This is another movie were I really enjoyed Jennifer Lawrence and talk of her being up for another supporting actress nomination is well deserved. There were also a ton of funny and memorable moments and the ending was great.

Netflix added six more Mystery Science Theater 3000 selections to their list the other day. I've already watched all six of 'em over the weekend. The highlight was 'Warrior of the Lost World', which had Persis Khambatta (Star Trek: The Motion Picture) and Donald Pleasance (Halloween) in the movie being mocked.
My younger nephew wanted to watch Jeff Dunham...pretty sure its the first I've seen that one unedited. There was a joke gettin' his dog fixed that I hadn't heard before, and the cutaways to the Sweet Daddy puppet backstage were off puttin' and annoyin'. Pretty sure I would have remembered that, too.
Watched the first film distributed by Drafthouse Films earlier tonight. Pretty funny, considerin' its about suicide bombers in London. And Benedict Cumberbatch turned up there towards the end...so, that was a plus.
Watchin' Christopher Plummer as Sherlock Holmes in Murder by Decree now.
Fantastic German film about similar murders of young girls 20+ years apart. It doesn't fall into any of the familiar tropes and there's stellar acting all around. I've been learning German and I really enjoyed the fact that the dialogue was all spoken slowly enough for me to understand some of it and follow along with the subtitles.

Good, but never really rises to the level of great. Richard Gere is a billionaire who has to successfully sell his company and hide a crime/personal secret within a very short time frame. Brit Marling is in this and that's a plus for me.

As with Vertigo there's a questionable structural choice here (the long scene with the psychiatrist, which everybody and their dog has already critiqued; I'll just say that if Hitchcock wanted a more detailed explanation of Norman's situation, it would have been more naturalistic to see Mrs. Bates talking to the psychiatrist, rather than having him do the Cliff Notes). Otherwise, this film holds up exceptionally well, which is especially impressive given that it's a slasher movie made under Hays Code restrictions, and whose big twists are public knowledge.

After the MST3K, I was kinda in the mood for Japanese monster movies, so I watched Rodan. It was not very good, even for 1960s Japanese monster movies. Two giant prehistoric pterodactyls attack Japan...and when the military options don't work, they just kinda kill themselves in a lava flow.
...meh...
Followed that up with a couple of Buster Keaton movies. I haven't seen a lot of silent films, just bits and pieces of 'em in other stuff. SJ was okay, but not great. And TG was kinda messed up in that Keaton somehow wins the Civil War for the South...?
And then a Brittney Spears concert video that showed me just how out of touch I am...the thing is about an hour & fifteen minutes long, and I didn't hear a song I knew 'til almost an hour into it. And it was filmed in 2011.
Went out to Lufkin yesterday for two matinees.
First up, AH, which wasn't as good as I had hoped for considerin' the cast. It needed more Jennifer Lawrence - she stool the show every time she showed up onscreen. Batman with a potbelly & a combover was amusin', too, but ya can see that in the trailer.
Followed that with The Hobbit sequel in 2D. I liked it a bit more than the first one, though the bit with the barrels distracted me for the whole rest of the movie...when the dwarves are makin' a break for it, each one of 'em has a barrel. All the barrels are filled with one dwarf. Bilbo follows, inadvertantly, but without a barrel. Durin' the escape/chase sequence, one of the dwarves destroys his barrel. And yet, Bilbo winds up with his own barrel, and the tubby ginger dwarf gets to keep a barrel, too. So...where did the two extra barrels come from?
Smaug was a pretty good lookin' dragon effect, too.
Got back to the house, and watched National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation with my sister & younger nephew. First time for both of them to see it, but its one of my holiday favorites. My dad & I saw it in theaters way back in '89...
Followed that with An Ideal Husband, a period melodrama about relationships in London. It was actually kinda dull, but it had a good cast.
And then the 500th "new to me" movie of the year, WtBR starrin' Bill Murray as Hunter S Thompson. I liked it quite a bit more than Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
Watchin' a first season episode of Dexter now, before I call it a night.

The one wartime Preston Sturges film not included in the DVD collection I bought a few years ago, a conceptually quite audacious film, though in execution I maintain my opinion that much of Sturges' comedy hasn't aged especially well. Part of the issue is the lead actor, who did the somewhat similar Hail the Conquering Hero with Sturges (also a satire of wartime patriotism and social mores), who I find kind of annoying; also straddling the line between funny and annoying is Sturges' recurring supporting actor William Demarest. All the same, there's quite a bit of clever material here, and it's impressive that Sturges managed to get a movie featuring a girl who gets drunk, marries a man she doesn't remember only to find herself pregnant, and then tries to rope another guy into marrying her to cover it up, and plays it all as a buoyant comedy (ending with the government hypocritically covering it all up for its own reasons).

TPE was the movie the rest of the family wanted to watch on Christmas Eve. I had never watched it, since I thought the motion capture animation was a bit too creepy. And I still have the opinion. It really throws me off, and I don't care for it. It was an alright movie, though...I'm sure some of those train sequences look great on a theater screen, so I may try to check it out again next year, since I know places in Austin show it durin' the holiday season...Alamo Drafthouse is usually good for a show, and the Bob Bullock shows it on their IMAX.
Hasting's had a special deal for the holiday - any DVD or blu ray in the store free two day rentals. I took the nephews into Nacogdoches, and let 'em pick two movies each, and I picked two movies, and got stuff for my sister & brother in law to watch, too.
The boys picked Pokemon movies, which I didn't really watch because that stuff just doesn't interest me.

IDW, from Drafthouse Films, was a really good movie. Its the first Drafthouse Films movie to come out after I left Austin, so I missed it in the theater. If ya haven't seen it, ya should check it out, 'cause I think it completely captures that feel of friendship and jealousy of preteens.
PL was one where Drafthouse ran the trailer for it quite a bit, but didn't get it to show, and I didn't want to pay theater prices to see it when it came out. It was an alright drama, with good actin' all around. Could have done without the twist, thought, that pushes Damon's character to his final act...
Twilight was a by the numbers murder mystery with Paul Newman, Gene Hackman, Susan Sarandon, James Garner, Reese Witherspoon, Stockard Channing & John Spencer. It was a really good cast for such a mediocre movie. And ya get to see Reese Witherspoon's boobs, so that's a plus.
Spent Christmas watchin' seasonal movies, even though I had the house to myself.
JatW was mildly amusin', especially the Santa brawl, but it just really made me miss Phil Hartman. That dude was freakin' awesome...
CCTM was an animated version of the story with Nicolas Cage & Kate Winslet providin' some voice work. It didn't really add anything new for anyone familiar to the story.
SCTM seemed like a biopic, actin' like Santa Claus was a real guy for the first half and then redeemin' himself in the second half. John Lithgow & Dudley Moore have supportin' roles in the movie as a greey toy maker & an elf.
SCCtM was just all around stupid. Martians come to Earth and kidnap Santa to teach their own children how to act like children. Even for the '60s, it was bad...
Watchin' Fastest now...its a motorcycle racer documentary narrated by Ewan McGregor.

Martin Scorsese goes from his most child-friendly film, Hugo, to this decidedly child-unfriendly film, where the f-bomb is employed something like 400 times (per one website's count) and more or less the first shot is Leonardo DiCaprio snorting cocaine out of a woman's crotch. This is pitch-black comedy, almost certainly the funniest film of the year, and it depends 100% on the viewer to instinctively understand how morally bankrupt virtually every character is, because within the film itself this is strictly a Seinfeld-style "no lessons learned" policy in effect. I can easily see why people might not like this -- it is, as the AV Club nicely put it, a study of an excessive lifestyle told in an excessive fashion.
It hangs largely on DiCaprio, who is phenomenal. Between Catch Me If You Can and Django Unchained he had a ten-year stretch of super-serious, gritty dramas, which were generally very high quality, but it's great to see him having fun onscreen again. Movie star charisma of his calibre shouldn't be so neglected. He also reveals some quite astonishing physical comedy skills. The supporting cast is huge, anchored by Jonah Hill, who has, much to my surprise, turned out to be an adept character actor.

I'm not a Tolkien purist and I read the book 15yrs ago so my grade is largely based on did I enjoy it as a film, not an adaptation. I'd grade it higher if the film actually worked well as a film within itself. I found it perhaps a tad long to not tell a story within itself given that timeframe. I was at the least expecting Smaug to die. Had that happened I'd very likely give this an A grade at minimum. I've read that the Woodland Elves sequence is pulled from elsewhere and that Legolas is even shoehorned in(for familiarity I guess?) and that the Tauriel character is not even of Tolkien origin but I liked that character a plenty.

First of all, the Minions might be the best marketing ploy since Cars. They're annoying, cute, and the children eat them up so much. I can understand why Kids would gravitate towards the minions, but what was it about Cars that became so profitable for Disney anyway. I liked the movie, but when I originally saw it, nothing about it screamed "marketable".
As for this movie, it was just like the first one, cute and charming. Really liked Lucy, kind of wish the Villain actually was shown more rather than rushing the reveal, and the girls, especially Agnes, were the best things about the movie.

This was an indie Sundance success story back in 2011, and drew a lot of praise for its lead actress, Felicity Jones (leading man Anton Yelchin, more known already, kind of flew under the radar). I debated whether or not to rate this as a C+ or B-, but I couldn't get over the intense dislike I developed for the main characters. The central conflict of the movie, the separation of the lovers across national boundaries, results from the woman impulsively deciding to overstay her student visa by a few months just because she wants to be near her boyfriend, even though she's been advised that this can create problems; and wouldn't you know, it's hard to get another visa when you've breached the conditions of the last one? And then, the boyfriend is a self-employed furniture designer, i.e., the definition of a transferable job, but for no reason the movie ever delves into he doesn't want to move to England if the girlfriend he so intensely desires can't come to America. Notwithstanding the initial stupidity, I was ultimately more sympathetic to the woman, because Yelchin's character spends pretty much the whole movie acting like a whiny douchebag.
Also, Jennifer Lawrence is in this, post-Winter's Bone and pre-everything else. She's excellent in her comparatively limited role as a competing love interesting for Yelchin's character.

Watched a couple of old Cary Grant black & white movies the other night. Both were good for a laugh, too.
I was in Nacgodoches today, and after a lunch out & errands, I got to the four o'clock showin' of 47 Ronin. Its the discount matinee, but with the 3D surcharge, it came to $8. Not too bad, but still too much in the end, 'cause the movie was not good.
Based on a legend, it treats Japan as a land where magic works, witches & serpent men are real foes to fight, dragons and giant six-eye elk beasts are to be killed, and reincarnation could be a possibility.
The story was borin', though, and the fight sequences were either filmed piss poorly or just weren't choreographed in a way to be filmed well.
And there was no reason for it to be in 3D.
This will most likely be the last movie I see in a theater this year. Kinda bummed about that, to be honest...
I've read that the Woodland Elves sequence is pulled from elsewhere and that Legolas is even shoehorned in(for familiarity I guess?) and that the Tauriel character is not even of Tolkien origin but I liked that character a plenty.
The elves in Mirkwood, and the party's captivity in their halls, have always been a part of the story, it's just that Jackson & Co. expanded their role, putting them into places such as the barrel sequence and Laketown where originally they were not present.
Putting Legolas into the story actually makes sense, given that his character was not created until LOTR after The Hobbit had already been written, and he was said to be the son of the Elvenking in The Hobbit. So it stands to reason that he would have been present at the Elvenking's halls during the story ( though the choice to involve him in an active role is on the filmmakers ).

This was actually the first Hitchcock film I saw, probably about 10+ years ago, when I rented it from Blockbuster (ah, how the times change). I can appreciate it a lot more now, but I still maintain that as a thriller I don't find it especially effective (it works more as a character study and exercise in good technical filmmaking). The long shots of Kelly going through the house are well-executed, as is Stewart's waiting for Burr to appear, but once Burr comes into the apartment it gets kind of silly (repeatedly hitting him with flashbulbs, and Burr never thinking to just close his eyes when Stewart gets another one in, for instance). Stewart and Kelly are both terrific (and Kelly looks gorgeous).
