Movies or shows about Colonization of Mars or the Moon?

^Umm, of course Total Recall is a movie about a Mars colony. Why in the world would you think I'd dispute that? Whether it's about the founding of a colony or the presence of an existing colony is neither here nor there -- it's still about a human colony on Mars. The point is that a colonization narrative is distinct from an exploration narrative. A story where astronauts come for a visit and return to Earth is not a colonization story. Colonization means going there to live permanently, to found a community -- like the one in Total Recall.

It can also be said that Total Recall is about a civilization living on the planet Mars in the broadest sense. There's more than one angle to look at it...

I'm surprised Space:1999 was mentioned, but, not UFO?

I've tried watching Space:1999 2 or 3 times in recent years, and not been able to get into it. UFO, on the other hand, I like a great deal

Not sure what you mean.
If you're referring to the idea that Quaid's trip to Mars was just a dream (which I'm fairly convinced it was), keep in mind that the Martian colony was mentioned in the early scenes of the film, before Quaid went to Rekall. So the Mars colony did really exist even though Quaid didn't really go there, and the Rekall fantasy was based on the real colony (right down to its political tensions) -- although the nonsense about the alien artifact and the terraforming was probably just part of the Rekall simulation.

The human colony is a civilization living on Mars.

The people of Barsoom are a civilization living on Mars.

I gave the guy movie titles of people living on Mars/the Moon. It's called a broad perspective. Not everything needs to be so linear.

The people of Barsoom are a civilization living on Mars.

But not a colony, because it's a native civilization. The original statement was, "I'm looking for some good movies or shows about Mars or the Moon being colonized by humans."

And I prefaced it with:

I'm going to go out on a limb and say your intention was a movie portraying a colony/presence on the moon/mars since you mentioned Total Recall.

Do you enjoy debating semantics? Is this important to you?

I'm just answering the question as Dream asked it. There's nothing wrong with broadening the conversation, but since Dream was requesting information about a specific type of movie, I feel it's only polite to make sure that Dream is aware of which films fit the request and which ones diverge from it.

Which is why I prefaced my suggestions with an addendum. Which you felt compared to argue without taking my addendum in to consideration. I don't mean to lash out at you, but it's a massive pet peeve of mine when people neglect to consider an entire post, or take things so literally on the internet that conversations become completely linear and tightfisted.

Saying Mars and "ive seen Total Recall" is completely ambiguous when developing comparisons using only 2 parameters. There's many elements to take away from Total Recall in congruence with mars. That addendum allows the OP to determine for himself if my suggestion meets his criteria.

And a general addendum doesn't specify which individual films do or do not fit. I was clarifying for Dream's benefit. I don't need your approval for that.

That's great. I don't need your approval on whether or not my suggestions fit within the context of my addendum. Critical thinking would be a wonderful skill for you to employ now.

I think Christopher's point was that you prefaced your post with an addendum, which is absolutely fine, and then you listed a bunch of movies, some of which fit with the OP's original post, and others fitting with your addendum, which is also fine. But what you didn't do was explain to the OP which movies fit with his original request and which fit with your addendum, thereby denying the OP the ability to make an informed choice on your suggestions. All Christopher was doing was making that distinction for the OP, which was entirely fair.

Wonder if the OP is sorry he asked the question in the first place, but I do thank the Thread Posters for some titles I had never heard of! I am looking forward to checking them out! Shukran!

Gerry Anderson's UFO, the predecessor to Space: 1999, has a moonbase that provides the primary defense against the alien incursions, with its Interceptors. And purple wigs.

Whilst UFO does have a moonbase most of the action takes place on Earth, though it has been a number of years since a last saw some of the show so I could be mistaken.

UFO had 26 episodes of which at least 10 episodes had scenes on the S.H.A.D.O. Moonbase.

If the moonbased Interceptors stopped all the UFOs in space, then there wouldn't have been a show. So, yeah, the show was mostly about what happens when aliens get through the Interceptor screen.

However, there are several episodes where events primarily concern the moonbase. One of them, "Survival," plays out similarly to TNG's "The Enemy," except for the ending.
