Mourning Trek

After watching the DSC trailers, I feel like I am mourning classic trek (TOS,TNG,DS9,VOY). I think we all need a collective hug from each other (the classic fans). The thing I can't get over is that it will not continue family friendly, that was always one of the best things about trek. They could tell very difficult stories...raw stories even...but still be ok for family viewing. Now, TV-MA. (I know there were several exceptions such as in my favorite TNG episode "Conspiracy")

Of course, as with everyone else, I will watch...it does have the name after all. :-)

Just needed to get that off my chest.

Ok, back to getting ready for the premier. :-)

As a "Classic" fan, I started mourning the death of "real" Star Trek in 1987, right after I saw "Encounter at Farpoint."

Eventually I got over myself and learned to like TNG and love DS9 (and tolerate VOY and not hate ENT).

In other words, you're singing the next verse to a song that has been around since 1973 at least -- when TAS premiered.

It's just a TV show. I like some, I don't like some. You'll probably end up feeling the same about DSC.

Don't worry. You're entitled not to like the series or the direction it maybe going in. You're entitled to weigh anchor at preferring TOS, movietrek..et al.

You're still a fan in good standing, so hold your head high.

I'm happy enough with it atm. I'll have to watch a few episodes first though to get a good reading on it.

I'm also mourning classic Trek.

I remember watching some of the TOS movies before TNG started and I really liked it. Later on, at the height of TNG popularity, one of my channels aired every episode of TOS and I realli loved it!

I was a bit unsure about TNG when it started, sort of "is there all there is" feeling. Maybe I expected more after the TOS movies. But it didn't take long before the series and the excellent characters started to grow on me and it became a beloved favorite-and still is.

As for DS9, in the beginning I thought it was like some "TNG minor team" to use sports vocabulary but it didn't take long before I started to like the characters and the premise for the series. Unfortunately, the channel which aired DS9 only aired the first season. But two years ago I bought the DS9 DVD.s and despite some trouble with malfunctioning DVD.s and having to buy new ones from time to time, I have reached season 6 of this fantastic series.

I liked Voyager from episode 1. The characters and the premise for the series. Unfortunately that ended when Kes was kicked out. However, I still like seasons 1, 2 ans 3 of Voyager plus a few of the later episodes.

I never got into Enterprise, I was against a retro series from the beginning and besides that, I found the characters dull and uninteresting compared to the other Trek series. But what I disliked the most was that the series messed up already established Trek history plus the fact that it didn't look like something pre-TOS, more like some hybrid between Voyager and some third-rate SF-series.

I don't like the new movies. I hate the scenario with some universe were certain planets which exists in the TOS and TNG/DS9/VOY universe are destroyed in this one. I don't like to see Kirk, Spock, MCCoy and the others in a scenario between Star Wars and Starship Troopers in which they don't belong. At least Star Wars has original characters and is exciting in its own way.

As soon as I saw that DSC will be a retro series, I lost interest. Just more screwing up of established Trek history. I want my 24th century back!

Fortunately I have the TOS, TNG, DS9 and Voyager DVD:s!

Yep. Had the same type of feeling when TNG started. But the nice thing is they will always have the old stuff out there. Hopefully DSC will strike a chord with you. You never know.

And there are always the fan sites doing "classic " Trek.

Maybe The Orville is for you? It's supposed to be a lot more TNG-like than the trailers suggest.

The J.J. Star Trek film trilogy prepared us for ST Discovery. I am a TOS/TAS/TOS films fan. I liked both the NG/DS9/VOY era and the J.J. Kirk films. I am just glad the Star Trek is still in production in films or television series and not a dormant/dead franchise.
I accept the different Star Treks as I accept the different James Bond film eras OO7s Connery/Lazenby/Moore/Dalton/Brosnan/Craig. I am a fan of other dormant/dead franchises that I wish had another chance.

Family friendly? Not sure that was their intent back when TOS was being put together. It was a show meant for an adult audience. It's "family friendliness" was probably a result of the rerun syndication time slots, SF being thought of as kiddie fair by parents and the changing TV standards over the decades. As the song says "In olden days, a glimpse of stocking was looked on as something shocking. But now, God knows, anything goes."

Oh, I was worried about that too. However, I stopped worrying about it when Aaron Harberts (one of DSC showrunners) said this on EW:

"I'm not saying we're not doing some violent things or doing a tiny bit of language. But what's important to the creative team is the legacy of the show - which is passed down from mother to daughter, from father to son, from brother to brother. We want to make sure we're not creating a show that fans can't share with their families. You have to honor what the franchise is. I would say we're not going much beyond hard PG-13."

I think CBS pushed for TV-MA just to be safe. I'm confident DSC will be OK for family viewing.

Right there with ya! I remember all The Sky is Falling talk EVERY TIME a new era started................1979 and 87 stand out.

You guys are great! This is what I needed, just to get it off my chest and move on. Glad there are some others feeling the same way.

I will be looking with optimism to DSC.

I remember having similar feelings with ENT. Usually it takes until the series is off the air until I like it, oh well. Doesn't mean I won't watch :-)

I still have this feeling over TNG. To me, that moved Trek in to an era that it never went back to, for good or for ill.

Still, there have been solid outings, even from less than stellar series, so I have no doubt that Trek can keep moving forward, even if its the way I wouldn't do it.

Yep. I'm over it thanks to JJPrise.

First was ENT. I didn't want a prequel because it would invariably step on continuity landmines and the NX was a an upside down ripoff of the Akira. Then we got the abomination that was ST09 and the parody it made of TOS.

Then I got over it. Whatever It's just a show. I'm going to enjoy it for what it is.

I wondered if I was just too old and set in my ways. I disliked or was less than happy with the Star Wars prequels and TFA. Maybe it's me? Nope. I love Rogue One. Apparently they can make a new movie, even a prequel movie, and please me immensely.

So it comes down to accepting each series on its own merits. VOY and ENT were created by powers that had simply grown stale. Those shows were further hampered by the dictates of the network they were on. This bad combination was bound to force a reset.

I grew up with TOS. TNG premiered my freshman year of high school. I still remember my exuberance over TNG. Equally enjoyed DS9.

Love DSC Klingon make up. As long as the quality is there, I'll be happy. Just view it as a soft reboot and enjoy.

I remember after 2005 it was difficult to accept that Star Trek may be dead. From 1987-2005 there was always a show on the air and I started as a fan in '91. I've been avoiding reading a lot about Discovery so I don't know much about it other than the Klingon war will be explored. We'll see.

People have been predicting (or pronouncing) Trek's demise for longer than I want to think about. At this point, there are lots of different flavors of Trek, and we all have our favorites, but adding a new flavor to the mix doesn't strike me as grounds for mourning.

And when it comes to each new version, you're always going to have to strike a balance between "Hey, this isn't like the good old stuff!" and "Hey, this is just the same old thing!"

"It's the same, but different!" can be a tricky target to hit.
