This is an alternate universe series wherein there really WERE Witches around in the Colonies before the founding of America and in return for an end to the Salem Witch Trials they were use their powers to defend the community. When the Revolution began they were part of the Armed Forces and were granted an Accord wherein they would continue to service the new USA.

The first witch who cooked up the Accord? Now a General in the Armed Forces and still alive after all the centuries to continue training new recruits at their fortress.

I watched the first two episodes, and while I was expecting it to be a generic teen show....I was surprised at it. The character conflict is nice, the subtle changes to the world are shown without delving too deep and I'm going to keep watching. Plus being a Canuck I'm always happy when another Canuck gets a leading role in anything!

I've watched the first ep so far. Mixed feelings at this point. I like the idea and the world-building, but the tone and look of the show was dour verging on glum. Don't get me wrong. I've got no problem with darkness and angst, but you gotta make sure you don't cross over into gloomy. Army witches don't need to be campy, but the show could maybe use a little more fun.

Still, I'm planning to check out some more eps when I get the chance.

I haven't gotten around to checking this out yet, but I plan to. It sounds interesting, and most of the reviews I've seen for it haven't been bad.

So some things raised by tonight's episode.

There ARE male relatives to witches who came from witch blood, which was inevitable really. But whether they have any powers at all or not is still to be seen. I mean, their leader WAS called "Witch Father" and the people all respected him. Including the General herself.

And that council she met with, multinational. They're supposed to have magical abilities, the creator said in the aftershow that Indian magic is based on hand gestures as opposed to harmonic frequencies like the American Witches. Some of them were men too, which again implies there are Warlocks around in one form or another.

And I think we all knew there was something up with the old women she kept around. Now we know.

Anyone watch the last episode?

Well, while they haven't gone with the (somewhat predictable) plot twist that Alder is the real leader of the Spree, they have made her the real villain of the series what with her essential Coup D'etat against the President.

It would have added some sympathy to her character if they'd brought up that without her support from the Military she'd no longer have anyone willing to sacrifice their youth and she'd probably die of extreme old age soon. But I suppose a desperate desire to stay in power after 300 years is motive enough.

Okay, aside from the predictable twist of who was in the Spree....I wasn't expecting how good this episode would be. Twists, turns and nice setup for Season 2.

And BTW, there will be a Season 2.
