most "normal" people don't know KIRK is dead

Wowbagger said:
How about an FAQ? I recall, years ago, when I was a young n00b, the BBS had a canon FAQ that not only was very informative, it also insulted me just enough to force me to realize I was a n00b, and that I should shut up already.
FAQ's do not work. Which is why I don't want one in here. Nobody reads them before starting a new thread.

I think a better idea would be for somebody to provide a link to the most recent thread discussing said topic. Then a mod can come in and close the duplicate thread and conversation can continue in the old one.

Nimoy is admired by sixty-some odd years-old women.

Everybody loves the Shat.

Shatner is too much a character unto himself now. His presence would pull me out of the movie, funnily enough.

Shatner isn't the end and be all of Star Trek. Sure he played a part but some people act as if Star TRek = Shatner.

^ Far too many think just that, and as soon as you point that out they get all uppity and defencive.

Lord, we can't have people thinking he isn't perfect !

Who is perfect ? Nobody, it's impossible to be.

Comidians make fun of him all the time yet no one goes after them for it, however as soon as a FAN makes fun of him, it's open Season on them, no exceptions made !

OH dear, someone belittled the Great And Powerful Shatner, we must avenge his honor to the death !

They sound like spoiled rotton kids, throwing a temper tantrum, all because someone doesn't think he's all that.

A lot of them sound like creepy stalker types after awhile.

* Why don't they marry Shatner if they think he's so great *

Most "normal" people don't know Shatner's Kirk died? Probably true. Most "normal" people don't care about Shatner being in the movie? Probably true.

Wrong..AS I said before. Shatner has fans outside of Trek. Unlike other stars (Nimoy to be more exact) he has lived on in other aspects. He would bring in fans of Boston Legal who don't like Star Trek..

So...no..I totally disagree with that blanket statement.

Let me put it this way - most people out there aren't going to say "Hey, where the hell is Shatner?!? This isn't Star Trek!" in a movie that is totally recast anyway. It just isn't going to happen. The only people who will say that are a few hardcore fans who will pay to see the movie either way.

If it made sense to have Shatner in there and it didn't require any silly explanation that is superfluous to the overall plot then I wouldn't mind seeing it. To be honest though I'm really not bothered, just as I wasn't particularly bothered if Nimoy appeared. This movie sounds like it is going to be more than strong enough without any of them. Like the general audience, I just want a good movie that uses it's setting well. Only fanboys care about their precious Shatner not getting a gig when they think he should just because it is called Star Trek and has someone called Kirk in it. Nobody else cares.

The only people that would "require a silly explanation" are hardcore fanboys who thrive on such details, and they are NOT this film's target audience.

70% of the people who took the USA today poll want him in the movie. He's more popular now then ever before and the majority of the movie-going public would get a kick out of seeing him in Trek 08. NO explanation required.

When most 'Normal' people think of trek, they think of 'Enterprise, Kirk, Doctor Spock, Bones, the black chick in the miniskirt, alien babes, and Klingons' ... but they do imagine the Enterprise, Shatner, Nimoy, and Kelley when they think of Trek too.

Actually, 'normal' people also know TNG. Whenever I mention a new Star Trek movie to 'normal' people, they immediately assume it's another film 'with Patrick Stewart'. Even when informed it's a reboot with Kirk and Spock, they're simply incredulous that yet another Star Trek film is being made.

This late in the day, that's certainly true. A great many "normal" people are very much aware of Stewart - as has been mentioned - and one or two of the other modern Trek characters as representative of "Star Trek."

Just listening to folks occasionally mention Trek in the "real world" over the years, I've been a little surprised to hear that the second-most widely known modern Trek character doesn't appear to be anyone from TNG or DS9, but Seven of Nine!

Internet polls mean the paper they are written on. Too easy for one small hardcore group to plug around, vote multiple times, etc. "normal" people don't even look at them, therefore you are left with the hardcore minority who actually care about them and then the results aren't very represenative. It is like the various sci-fi magazine polls that say Firefly/Serenity is the best science fiction piece of all time.

Nevermind. All this sort of nonsense simply builds hype for the movie. That is a good thing, as the "normal" audience just see the Shatner stuff as funny Trek geeks kicking up the usual fuss and will be harmless to the success/failure of Star Trek on it's own merits. :)

This is all obviously true, as well.

At this point, we might as well start a poll asking if people are disappointed that Gene Coon will not be one of the producers of this film. If we get a 99.4% "Yes" vote, that will easily have as much effect on Abrams' Trek movie as this "USA Today" poll does.

And you are surprised about this?

In a male-dominated fandom with a fairly high quotient for geektitude???

Guess you haven't been paying attention to the approximately 3 billion threads in the General Media Forum on the topic of 'boobies'.

No - I'm surprised that it seems to be true of the general population to the extent that they notice "Star Trek" at all. The "Trek geeks," as you say, know who Ezri Dax and Data and Worf and Odo and that gang are as certainly as they know Seven.

The most unexpected example I can remember was about three years ago sitting outside at a Starbucks, near three middle-aged bikers. There was one woman and two men - all heavily tattooed, the guys in sleeveless denim jackets - and another rolled up and parked a few feet away. He was wearing this really peculiar pair of sunglasses - chrome, with a kind of band that looped up over the top of his shaved skull instead of earpieces.

The woman said, "you look like 7 of 9" and everyone laughed.

"Death, the undiscovered country from which no traveller returns. Except Kirk, who's visited twice and says it's a rather nice place."

And Spock :) Difference is Spock had the good manners to come back quickly and the right age.

Heath Ledger is still dead…

…but captain Kirk will only die if we let him.

Consider this: for one thing Cpt Pickard is no medical examiner and in no way qualified to pronounce Kirk as dead.

For another we’ve known for a while that Kirk was looking forward to a reduced pace of life. Note his reluctance to embrace the Spocks peace initiative with the Klingons and his reluctance to leave the Nexes.

We can conclude that Guinan has been to the Nexes from her knowledge of it…she even went to visit Picard in the Nexes who also entered and left. So who knows what effect that dimension has on living organisms?

Kirk was presumed dead and he liked it that way…he was living large in the Nexes, It is entirely plausible that Kirk could have reanimated shortly after being covered with stones, slipped in among the confusion of the crashed Enterprise’s rescue efforts and is presently keeping a low profile.

Mary Magalene devoted disciple and rumored to be an intimate friend did not even recognize the recently resurrected Jesus, the son of God…so it is entirely possible Cpt Kirk just hauled himself on a rescue transport.

...jsut say'en I don't accept Kirk as being dead...if anything he's MIA.

Re: Heath Ledger is still dead…

Of course, there's the potential of people asking why Denny Crane is in the new Star Trek movie...

"What? Lawyers are still around in the 23rd Century? What kind of positive future is that?"

/I know lawyers. Some of them almost rise to the level of being friends.

Re: Captain Kirk as Sam Cogley

This has to have already been suggested in one of the many Bring Shatner Back threads, but this is the answer. Yes, bring Shatner back, but bring him back as somebody the Denny Crane loving public already knows. Have Shatner play Sam Cogley.
