most "normal" people don't know KIRK is dead

Actually, they (Abrams and the gang) can do whatever they want. And they're quite clear: They don't want Shatner in the movie.

So, if it's canonical, he can't be there, and if it's not, they don't want him there. Regardless, he's not in the movie.

You guys can't have it two ways.

You want this movie to be a canonical prequel... Okay, if it fits with canon, then old Kirk is dead.

If it's a new line of canon, you can do whatever you want.

Make up your minds.

NOOOOO
The bridge railings must be red and Kirk is not dead!

He's a dead Jim

I find it strange how some people actually seem incensed that the writers had the gall to come up with a story that did NOT resurrect Shatner from the dead and require Shatner's involvement from the very beginning! As excited as I am to see Nimoy play Spock one last time, a part of me does wish that no member of the TOS was involved in this movie, as that would probably drastically cut down the annoying "Shatner must be in the movie or Star Trek is nothing without him" threads.

Dare I say it but some people need to get over it and read the Shatnerverse books if they really find his movie death unpalatable? I'll admit to even enjoying "The Return" but rolled my eyes when Kirk died YET AGAIN and got resurrected YET AGAIN. For that reason among others I gave up reading them after "The Avenger", but I'm sure Shatner fans can find a lot to enjoy with those. Besides who knows? If this movie does well enough, maybe the next one could mess with bringing Shatner's Kirk back alive. Just as long as he doesn't come back alive only to die and come back alive again like in those books, I'd probably enjoy the movie immensely along with them.

... Kirk was still lying there) B) Picard buried him.

Not only that... Picard also had to chop him into pieces...
(remember the 'The grave is too small!!!-debates? ;) )

There actually were "the grave is too small" debates?

Oh, wow. Wish I had been around in those days! ;)

Re: Heath Ledger is still dead…

"You want this movie to be a canonical prequel... Okay, if it fits with canon, then old Kirk is dead."

TOS Purists Requirements to See This Movie:

1. The Bridge railings, turbolift doors must be red.
2. Spock must be a logical green skinned Vulcan.
3. James Kirk's middle initial must be a T.
4. Women of Starfleet must wear minidresses.
5. The Starfleet uniforms must look like Charlie X's.
6. Ships' parts are not built on Earth.
7. Kirk is not Dead.

Because this is Canon tm.

Hmmm... But if I DO follow canon:

Starfleet women wore pants. Spock was a red skinned emotional Martian. Kirk's middle intial was R. The bridge railings, and turbolift doors were grey. Ships's parts were built on Earth. The Uniforms have a department color collar, and the colors are blue, beige, and green.

And...

Kirk Is D E A D tm.

Oops.

So...TOS Purists tm are picking and choosing which Canon tm they want in the movie.

Just what they accuse JJ "The Evil Satan" Abrams of doing. :guffaw:

I remember those. I liked the idea Kirk was buried standing up. :D

Sorry folks, but Generation wasn't a big hit. I like the movie, I think it is the best TNG movie, but in reality? Not to many people outside of TREK would have even known he was dead. Ask your moms/dads, if they haven't seen it, or any of your 'normal' friends at school/work? I bet maybe 2 out of 10 will even remember the movie, and that he died in it.

Yes, I know...we are all 'normal' on this board as well. But you know what I mean. I mean 'non' fans. And based on recent STAR TREK tv ratings and movie Box office (or lack there of) I am willing to bet there are far more people who are not fans than who are.

Trying to say Star Trek fans aren't normal people? Shame on you! You should be banned from this forum.

If the way Abrahm's and company tap dance around this issue is being "clear" I'd hate to see them when they are unsure!

Hmm. I've been a member of this board for say, four-five years I believe and never once been a mod :( Oh well...

The ONLY person you need to convince that Kirk is dead is William Shatner, if you can do that he will stop writing those damn novels in which he keeps reappearing alive and well in countless timezones.

Have you even read the novels mate? They are actually written by Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens, Shatner only collaborated. In my opinion these novels are a fantastic piece of writing that at least attempts to create an ongoing story arc that is memorable. I would have welcomed any attempt to turn these into movies, but that is just a dream unfortunately.

I read and quite enjoyed The Return, but when he died again only to be brought back in the next novel... then again... then again...

He was only ressurected once by the Romulans at the beginning of "The Return". The Borg Nanites in his system prevented his death as a hero at the end of "The Return". So he was still alive once Avenger began.

He never died again after that.
