most "normal" people don't know KIRK is dead

Well, it does make a big difference. I know for some of us its hard to accept, but the fact is? There are fans of Shatner outside of Trekdom. BOSTON LEGAL is pretty big where I work and I would bet maybe only two or three of us are Trek fans. Most of them think we are dorks. But they like Denny Crane and if putting Shatner in that movie could have brought new fans to the mix, then it does make a big deal if they don't know his character is really dead or not.

So. Sorry to disagree. But Shatner is right, and so are many of his fans. His not being in that movie based on events that happened in a 'failed' movie makes no sense. Kirk being in that movie would make about as much sense as inventing a Borg Queen out of thin air to appeal to horny teenager boys. And last I checked, FC was considered the best TNG Trek movie (though I think Generations was)

And I know many TREK fans hate the shatman. I know many don't even watch Boston Legal. But I know that about 12million people do watch Boston Legal, and from what I can tell, the make up of LEGAL's audience is not the same as Trek's. Rich white liberals watch Boston Legal. Young men 18-42 watch Star Trek. Two totally different groups. Why not go after both?

I know that some of you don't agree and that's cool. I can see it either way really. In fact if I had my choice, XI would have started on its own merrits. No Nimoy. Just reboot and go from there.

So if the script requires an elderly Spock, he should have been a new actor as well?

IIRC, the reason Nimoy is in the film is that the writers conceived a story that would involve the iconic Spock character at two distinct ages. It would be silly to recast Old Spock on a whim, to keep everything fresh, if Nimoy was going to be interested in playing him.

The addition of Nimoy was controversial and pulls in the nostalgia quotient needed for success, but you only need so much to keep the free publicity machine rolling. A Shatner-and-Nimoy cast announcement wouldn't necessarily cause a doubling of publicity.

Epecially when JJ promised fans that his production team had a respect for the weight of ST continuity over 40 years. Inventing a reason to raise Kirk from the dead would not be respecting that continuity. Fans would say it reeked of lack of faith in the new script.

I agree, to the extent that I'd be happier without Nimoy. But, Nimoy is in the movie because his character is alive, Shatner is not in the move because his character is dead. To dig up Old Kirk with some contrived plot to explain how he didn't die after all, despite being buried and everything, would just be a dumb stunt. It was bad enough bringing Spock back.

Kirk is dead. He's not alive any more. Khan is dead too; he's not alive, and he can't be in the new movie for the same reasons as Kirk. There are many dead Trek characters who won't be in the new movie, again for the same reasons as Kirk. Their un-aliveness prevents it.

Kirk is dead. Therefore, not in the movie.

Build a bridge, and get over it.

I'd suggest a better bridge than the one Kirk was on in Generations.

The one that killed him.

:p

Spoiler Space Starts Here Do Not Scroll Down To Read.....

Yes, he fell 10 ft off a foot bridge in the first TNG movie, any other questions ?

* Waiting for other questions *

But Shatner is teh best1111!!!1

Maybe they should just end the credit roll with the backwards-masked voice of Shatner saying "I'm still alive!"

Or a Fight Club-esque single-frame shot of Shatner randomly placed somewhere in the movie.

There. He was in the movie. Happy? :p

Just find a comet, and say he's in the trail.
problem solved.

Yes, you can say that.

But they will not stop asking.

Ever.

Well, until the movie is released.

And then maybe after that. "Did Shatner film any scenes that'll show up on the DVD?" "Star Trek sequel - Shatner in?"

Oh, the possibilities!

Normal people might have known Kirk died, but they have since forgotten due to the fact of really not caring.

That is what makes them "normal." Freaks!

Kirk isn't dead, the Borg and the Romulans brought him back -.-

And then
dies again at the end of the book, and he has to be revived again for the third book, "Avenger".

I wish people would give it a rest with the Shatner stuff already.
Two of the three threads begun today on this topic were started by RobertScorpio. He's new here, having registered on the 20th. I'm afraid this will happen over and over again with new members that are drawn to the board because of the movie.

We're all tired of the topic. JJ Abrams is REALLY tired of the topic. Unfortunately, it's new to the n00bs. All we can do is welcome them to the board and politely say, this topic has already been exhausted.

How about an FAQ? I recall, years ago, when I was a young n00b, the BBS had a canon FAQ that not only was very informative, it also insulted me just enough to force me to realize I was a n00b, and that I should shut up already.

"Death, the undiscovered country from which no traveller returns. Except Kirk, who's visited twice and says it's a rather nice place."

Anyway, this is a non-issue all around. All the general public want is a movie they like, canon or not, with or without William Shatner.

I like the fact the movie has Nimoy; in fact, I'd like it if the film had Shatner. But not Shatner at any cost, and I'm satisfied with just Old Spock.

Sorry folks, but Generation wasn't a big hit. I like the movie, I think it is the best TNG movie, but in reality? Not to many people outside of TREK would have even known he was dead. Ask your moms/dads, if they haven't seen it, or any of your 'normal' friends at school/work? I bet maybe 2 out of 10 will even remember the movie, and that he died in it.

Yes, I know...we are all 'normal' on this board as well. But you know what I mean. I mean 'non' fans. And based on recent STAR TREK tv ratings and movie Box office (or lack there of) I am willing to bet there are far more people who are not fans than who are.
Then the canon freaks would burst in, guns a blazin', screaming "J.J. Abrams violated teh CANON, and therefore raped me!!1!!1!one!"

 I'm 25, female (not fat) and admire Nimoy far more than I ever have Shatner.
