More Info On Stargate Universe

FFS.

I mentioned that the SGU article says nothing.

You brought up STXI, and how that happens all the time there with interviews.

I then said that was natural, seeing as one is a big blockbuster movie and one is a series on Sci-fi, so it's expected with STXI

You then say that it's not right to compare both, even though you're the one that brought up STXI in the first place.

Thanks...that helps.

Right.

True.

Right. However, I disagree with that statement. If the producers of the TV show which has yet to be filmed, let alone cast (most likely) choose not to reveal much other than broad details, then they have the right to do so.

With Trek XI being a film that is already filmed, the complete dance around giving out info (until of late) seemed odd.

In any case, why should a movie be given an allowance to not reveal stuff until they are ready and not a TV show?

You then say that it's not right to compare both, even though you're the one that brought up STXI in the first place.
Ahh....there in lies the problem.

Your comment had something with Trek XI being big budget and SGU being low-budget. That is where my comment came in on comparing the two in response to your budget comment (which was also indicated since I only commented on this after I specifically quoted you saying the budget stuff).

Perhaps in the future I should add "in that regard" to make sure I am extra-clear.

Stargate Universe is being aimed at a younger audience than the one that SG-1 and Atlantis attracted. Co-creator Robert C. Cooper recently described the show in an MGM interview: “It says Stargate in the title, but it’s also going to be something that is very different in tone. It will certainly have a Stargate in it, but is going to be unlike anything Stargate we’ve ever done before.”
Mallozzi tried to describe the show to his weblog readers by comparing it to other shows currently on television: “Now given that some of you have started comparing SGU to existing shows on the basis of what little information has been released thus far, I thought it might be a good idea to help paint a clearer picture of the show. And so, to those of you looking for standing comparisons, I’d say more Lost than Battlestar, more Dr. Who than Heroes, more The Office than My Name Is Earl.” Of course, this description doesn’t mean much to those who don’t watch some or all of these shows.
One thing that Mallozzi did say that might be more easily understood is that “there are threads that run through all the stories, in essence making this season one big 20-parter. … And while SGU will be more serialized than its predecessors, it … , like SG-1 and SGA, … will be accessible to first-time viewers looking to jump on at any point.”

Excusing the piss poor attempt at sharing information on the series... first Cooper starts by saying SGU will attract a younger audience than SG1/A... then Mallozi brings up series like Doctor Who, The Office and Lost.... all fairly 'grown up' series

Thanks for that Joe. You're an idiot.

Well we now know what Mallozzi might've meant about SG1 people showing up on this series.

In a rather bizarre scene from the audition sides for Chloe Carpenter, Chloe and Eli Hitchcock use the long range communications devices to inhabit people’s bodies on Earth and infiltrate a bar where Chloe, in the body of someone else, finds out what her “friends” really think of her. Chloe finds out that these people associated with her only because she is the daughter of a US Senator. Eli tries to comfort her, saying that the only person who really cares for what happens to him is his mother. They are both scared being trapped on the ship, but can’t deny the excitement of it all. They also realize that using the communications devices to live out their lives is not right and in Eli’s words, “screwed up”.

These devices sound similar to the ones that require the long range communications terminal and stones that Daniel and Vala used in “Avalon Part 2″ and “Origin Part 3″ when they initially made contact with the Ori in their distant galaxy. This technology is older than even the Stargate, having been part of the Altera-Ori society long before the Altera arrived in the Milky Way galaxy (which has been estimated to have been at least 50 million years ago based on the crystal technology found in the DHD with the Antarctic Stargate).
After Carter developed an emulator, Vala was able to make contact with SG-1 through Daniel, whose data was used as a baseline for the emulator in “Crusade”. The technology worked something like this: If one side of the connection merely has a stone, or a stone emulator, then the one with the terminal and stone takes over the other’s body. It appears that the Destiny has similar technology, but it’s not certain if Chloe and Eli were inhabiting the bodies of volunteers or unwilling participants nor whether or not there was a need for stones or stone emulators to complete the link to the people on Earth.
Use of this long range communications device might be how the crew of the Destiny will stay in touch with Earth while unable to physically return home (via the Stargate or the ship itself). It might also shed some light on Mallozzi’s recent statement: “[Earth] will play a part in SGU - but in a very unique way. … It’s possible we may see some familiar SG1 faces in SGU.”

They're already rehashing their worst plot points from the previous two shows? yeah, that bodes well...

I really can't help but think these SGU characters are going to be TERRIBLE. Whining, horny, dumb losers

Can I ask what about the long range Ori communication devices offends you, exactly? I think it's an interesting piece of technology.

Wow...way to take a scrap of information, spin it, and us it as an unnecessary slam.

The shows (Office, Lost, etc) are adult shows in concept. However, what is the main demo for those shows? I would almost bet that it is in the early-to-late 20s.

Okay, I'm going to kind of defuse the arguing going on here. My cousin has watched the first Stargate show now for however long it's been on. I think he watches the Atlantic one too, I don't know. He talks mainly about "SG-1," which I think is the first one. Anyway, some of the stuff sounds good, and I've been thinking that I'll give this new show a try. It sounds a little more like Star Trek, which is what I'm mainly a fan of. I do watch the new Battlestar, but that'll be over by the summer. And I can only watch Firefly and my TOS DVDs so much... ...so would you guys recommend this new show? I know it's hasn't come out yet, but what do you think from what you know? Would a complete Stargate novice like me like it? -Dan

You'll probably like it more than some of the older fans of the franchise, at least you won't the continuity weighing down your like or dislike of the series.

I really hope the show fails so that the idiots will finally fire these idiots.

Doctor Who is not a kids show, it's a family show. Sarah Jane is a kids show and Torchwood is the adult show.

We still don't have much to go on, but a vague statement and a scene here or there, but of all the things I've read about this series, I continue to remain unimpressed. I'm looking for the hook that gets me to watch the series, and I'm not finding it. Instead, there's news that this new series will be even less "adult" than current Stargate! How much lower can they go at this point?

Actually, in England Doctor Who is considered a children's show.

Where did you hear that then? The Doctor Who fanbase is huge, but mainly adults these days who grew up on the original show

The current BBC Doctor Who series was conceived as a kids show, and the producers constantly refer to it as such. The marketing in England is the biggest giveaway - Doctor Who annuals, kiddie magazines, tie in books 'for younger readers', etc. While many adults are fans, it is intended and produced as a kids show.

Tell me about it, my niece has EVERYTHING to do with Doctor Who from a sonic screwdriver to a talking cyberman helmet and she's only 5.
