More 3D Printing

Not a problem, these are neat. :) That Defiant came out really good!

Have you used anything besides the clear filament? I've used clear ABS and PLA, and I'm not a fan. Raw or Natural seems to work a lot better for me.

Also, I run all my models through this http://apps.123dapp.com/3dprint/install.html to get a clean, manifold STL file. If there are any open parts of the model, this thing will let you know. :)

Make some more. :D

I tried using some Orange ABS I got with it, but that just EXPLODED off the printbed thanks to it contracting (again, no heated bed = pain in the butt for ABS). I'll have to try again now ive found some blue painters tape.

I've also got some Green clearish PLA from M3D with the printer, but I'm saving that til i've run out of the clear. I agree, its not all that, but I guess that's why It was free :/

I've ordered some black PLA from Amazon for cheapish that I'm waiting for still, so I'll try that out when I get it.

Cool. with the non heated bed, the PLA will probably work better, with the blue tape.

Haven't run much PLA through mine, though. ABS is a lot tougher. :)

Hey Madman, have you tried using anything from sketchup files?

Yep. I usually export it from sketchup as a .dae (collada) file, and import that into Blender for cleanup, but it works fine. :)

Just for my own curiosity, how complex of a process is this sort of 3D printing? I.e. if you wanted an image template to translate into a physical representation for the printer to produce, would you have to do your own modeling or would you be able to download that? I have no real artistic skill and I'm not sure if I'd have the patience to paint everything anyway, but the process is very fascinating to me.

Nice work MadMan!

Thanks. :)

It really depends on what you're trying to print... there are pre-made objects on a few sites, www.thingiverse.com being the big one.

I got my printer specifically to print out my existing 3D designs, but quickly found out that you really need to build a model specifically for printing. It does take a good amount of time to build the model, test it, and then print it.

I enjoy it. :)

I've only been doing this for just over a week, but I've found Star Trek ships in particular (especially Federation ships) are the only real pains in the butt when it comes to printing, because when you print in no matter which orientation - you're gonna have a tonne of support material that'll be a bitch to remove OR the parts touching the build plate just aren't big enough to support themselves before they "join up" with the rest of the ship. This is what lead to me cutting up my Cheyenne Class into 10 pieces before printing them individually and gluing them together.

In contrast, the Defiant has printed very well multiple times for me. It helps because its essentially a large single block, and as I type I've got a shuttlecraft printing which is based on the Delta Flyer - another solid object which is coming out beautifully.

Cool. :)

Yep, that's why I cut my models up so much, to reduce support material. Most of my Starships have at least 10-12 parts.

Thats how the shuttle turned out - pretty happy with it!

In case you're wondering, its based off of this piece of concept art from Star Trek Online. I don't think it ever made it to the game, but I still loved the design - a kinda mass produced Delta Flyer.

Hello MadMan1701A, I have a ship that i created in Sketchup, and i have the STL file for it, I was wondering if you could print it, and how much you would charge me? I'll paint it myself, but I'll pay for the materials, your time, and shipping.

Here is my ship

Sent you a PM. :)

Man, that's like the third time I've seen something similar to the nacelle design I came up with. It must be catching on.

A few updates:

Final images of the Iron Mole and the Nautilus... I got them delivered today, and the owner was very happy. :)

And, a little 4 inch long Correllian ship for a board game:

I know that ship! it's from the old Tramp Freighters and Smugglers source book for the Westend games version of Star Wars the rpg.
