Her mom and dad are from Vietnam and Laos, respectively. The first time I ever saw her, the word "exotic" popped into my head, too. That, and "I have *got* to get to know this girl." :-)
We know a woman from that part of the world who looks like a movie star...with an Ivy League PhD on top of that. Her husband is the nicest guy in the world. I want to hate him, but I just can't.
My wife on the other hand comes from eastern Washington and northern California stock. Grr baby, very grr.
So I went to StarFest (a 'con) this past weekend and had to post a few of the pix I took.
I apologize about the quality of some of them. The first three were taken with a real camera in decent light during the costume contest. The last final five with a camera phone in a very yellow-ambient light of the bar after a few drinks.
Anyhoo.
This guys War Machine costume was unbelievable. When I asked him about his Iron Man suit (below) he told me it took him a month to make. I can't imagine how long the War Machine took.
And yes, he won the costume contest.

The roots were attacking the septic system and other pipes. Plus some of the branches were diseased. My mom loved that tree. She's sad about it.
As this past week i went through pretty much the same thing as your mom-- i can totally sympathize and empathize with her. I'm sorry she's sad! Can you replace the tree for her with a new seedling/sapling/whatever they call it? And she can plant it in a new place?
She's going to try to re-root some of the branches she saved (she's done it before), and probably plant them farther away from the house.
