The roots were attacking the septic system and other pipes. Plus some of the branches were diseased. My mom loved that tree. She's sad about it.

Are they going to dig up the roots? Because I have a fig tree just like that - big honkin' thing! - and we've cut it down like you did there, and it comes back just as big. Those are stubborn things!

They dug up everything, and turned it into mulch.

As this past week i went through pretty much the same thing as your mom-- i can totally sympathize and empathize with her. I'm sorry she's sad! Can you replace the tree for her with a new seedling/sapling/whatever they call it? And she can plant it in a new place?

A man from a raptor rehabilitation and rescue group came to the last cub scout meeting. He brought 5 birds, this was by far the biggest:

Unfortunately, she can't survive in the wild because she's blind in her right eye after getting shot by a pellet gun. If she tries to fly, he says she just goes in circles.
And on a smaller scale, the kids found a bird's nest in the back yard this morning, complete with 3 little eggs.
After sitting and watching it for a while, the female cardinal came back to it and I could see the male higher up in the tree.

Her mom and dad are from Vietnam and Laos, respectively. The first time I ever saw her, the word "exotic" popped into my head, too. That, and "I have *got* to get to know this girl." :-)

Surprisingly, fewer than one might expect. The Tiger cubs (1st grade) were in the front row and she was eyeing a couple of them.
As big as she is, he said she only weighed 4 pounds.
