MLB Talk - 2010 Season

So, Vernon Wells. Two games, three home runs, and six RBIs. Where's this guy been for the past three seasons?

Braves pitching is phenomenal. Billy Wagner still knows how to shut them down. No runs allowed by the bullpen in two games (7 innings).

Pirates, Giants, and Cardinals also look really good. Going to be a great year.

I think the ump overreacted in warning both benches like that. It's obvious that neither pitcher was deliberately trying to hit people. Jeter even joked about it to Youkilis as he passed first base.
Yeah definitely. Alot of it probably has too do with the Yankees/Red Sox rivalry though. I imagine the umps are on pins and needles whenever these two teams come together

^ By handing out warnings when they're not needed, though, the umps are just blowing things out of proportion. Obviously the players get on well with each other, and as for the fans, well, there's bound to be isolated incidents but nothing really serious. The fans should, and do, feel safe when at each other's ballparks. (The "...sucks" chants are just normal sports trashtalk...)

So far Beckett and Lester didnt look great...despite the 1-1 record.

Guess we should cut them both, then? Kinda a small sample size to make any sort of judgement, no? Heck, Sebathia and Burnett didn't look any better, Yanks should probably fire them as well

Even after the two of them put up fairly mediocre first starts, I'd be willing to bet that you could probably find 29 or so other teams that would trade for them in a heartbeat. Hell, at this point, Youkilis is on track to hit .571 for the season, Pedroia is line up for 81 HRs, and V-Mart should have about 243 RBIs by the time we're done.

Should probably not read too much into 2 games in a 162 game schedule.

I only meant it in the context of an 18 game Yankee-Boston series...not the whole season..Lester is supposedly a Yankee killer.

RAMA

Even in that context, it was a small enough sample size to be meaningless, especially for a pitcher's first start of the season. Even in the context of a 18 game schedule, 2 games is only 1/9th of the way through it. Out of the first 6 pitchers we've seen, only Lackey vs Pettitte was a good matchup. The first four guys all kinda sucked, and clearly weren't quite in mid-season form yet.

Hell, even in the context of the one game, Lester doesn't do too badly if Scutaro doesn't make that error, which led to the game winning run. Additionally, the Yankees have the best offense money can buy, with all-stars at just about every position, so can't really fault pitchers for not shutting them out.

Really doesn't even matter, as even as bad as Beckett and Lester did, all 3 games were basically decided by the bullpens. And the Sox' bullpen isn't quite up to snuff so far. 159 games to figure it out, i suppose...

11% might be a statistically small sample but its enough for me to say "so far"....since I'd assume there will be more games to judge from...In terms of advertising Beckett and Lester and many of their pitchers as acquired specifically to beat the Yankees, I think my original comment still stands...

RAMA

Lester was home grown, so can't really say we picked him up to try and beat the Yankees. As for Beckett, got him several years back, and front-line pitchers are required to win the big games, so not sure it's all about you. Beckett won a World Series for the Sox in 2007, if I'm not mistaken.

Were ANY Red Sox players aquired with a stated goal to just beat the Yankees? They ARE in the same division, so that's part of it, but don't flatter yourselves. Is every Yankees player aquired picked up specifically to beat the Red Sox? Of course not. No one's "advertising" that except you, and only as a strawman to beat down. I guess Sebathia and Burnett were aquired just to beat the Red Sox, and have similarly failed? Should Cashman be looking to cut them, since they couldn't get the job done so far? 11% done with the rivalry, of course...

And your statement of "enough for you to say 'so far'" is about as meaningful as I pointed out. "So far", granderson is on pace for 60-70 homeruns. "So far" Youkilis is batting about .600. So far, Sebathia has an ERA of about 9 or so. Wanna put any money down that those won't hold up?

Hell, you don't have to look past LAST season to see how silly judging things on such a small sample size is. The Sox won the first 8 games or so against the Yankees, and yet they finished 9-9, and the Yankees won the World Series. Making sweeping generalizations on such small sample sizes, about a sport that lasts 6 months, is a recipe for disaster...

That was pretty funny when Jeter passed Youkilis at first base and gave that fake shove and Youk started laughing.

They made a comment about it on MLB Tonight (God I love that show) and it was funny as hell. :guffaw::guffaw:

Went to the A's game today. Good win from them, but man how depressing that stadium has become. Still, about the game, I love Brett Anderson. One of the underrated of the "new" crop of pitchers in baseball today. The team unfortunately don't have any power, but they do have quite a bit of speed. It was entertaining watching them steal around the diamond.

Giants got a Gift. So maybe McCan ran into the bat and it was incidental contact, but I don't like having a game end on a questionable call. Still, it was a good game, great comeback for the Giants, and they are now 4-0. Unreal.

Joe West (umpire) should shut the fuck up. He said it was 'pathetic and embarrassing' that Yankees/Sox games last so long? Well, asshole never thought to consider that those games last that long BECAUSE THOSE TEAMS ARE THE BEST IN BASEBALL! They don't swing at pitches that are outside the strike zone, and they sure don't artificially speed the game up just because the ump says so (it's not his call, anyway). Linky

Yanks got hammered in St. Pete, dammit :( but the Mets are doing great back home. How about that time when Wright - and everyone else in Citi - thought he hit a homer but it bounced off the wall?

Yeah I was watching the Yankee game in a bar this after noon. I had to move to another spot to watch the Mets game 'cause at least they were actually playing baseball.

^ Despite all the problems with MLB.TV (they screwed up on Opening Day and accidentally locked out all the games) I have been getting hooked on it. I watched the Yankees/Rays and Mets/Nationals game at the same time. :techman:

is mlb.tv the online streaming of ball games? Does it work well? I wanted to get it but the website mentioned how they would black out local games. Seeing as how I live in NYC and want to watch Yankee games, it seems a tad retarded to me

The ball was already out of McCann's hands from the angle I saw. It doesn't even matter. We left 14 guys on base and Billy Wagner ruined a magical Tim Hudson start.. and we let two runs score in exchange for outs early on. Lame...
