MLB Talk - 2010 Season

Had a chance to go to the Target Field opener today, but the guy that asked me is a total loser and I decided I wasn't quite that desperate.

I still would have gone. It's a once in a lifetime gig.

I would have given anything to be there if it had been in in anyway fiscally possible to be there.

Instead I had to settle of TV. I was just a little disappointed Dick and Bert didn't grill Selig about contraction. Look at 'em now, bitch!

Field looks nice, but I already have my first complaint! The left field foul pole needs to be repainted. Had a disputed HR call today (it was foul, after a few replays), but they have the traditional yellow foul pole, but the geniuses in charge of planning put that yellow/tan limestone behind it, so the foul pole isn't distinctive like it's supposed to be, but disappears right into the background. Going to need to either paint it, or do something with the backdrop, doesn't work as-is...

Agreed. Even after several replays, I couldn't tell if that one hit was fair or foul. The Twins organization bragged about how nice the local limestone (from Mankato, I think) looked, but it really blends in with foul pole.

Even after hearing from other friends that went about how great it was, I'm glad I didn't go. It was a once in a lifetime gig, but last I heard he (or someone in his group) was waiting to get bailed out. Doesn't surprise me in the least.

Yes, the limestone looked good, and gave the field a nice, distinct look. They just have to repaint the foul pole a non-traditional color, so that it stands out. The point of the bright yellow is that it gives high contrast with the background, which is usually a nice dark color. When you color the background yellow, well...

not sure what to do with it, though, as i think that the in-play side of things has a dark background, while the foul side is tan limestone. Maybe make that pole 'Twins blue' instead of the traditional yellow? White would be best for the background, but would blend with the ball. Maybe red would also work, and it's another Twins color, as well as being Target's color of choice. Going to result in a lot of umpire replays on balls around that corner unless they do something.

Cameron's hit looked 50/50 from straight on, almost definitely fair in one replay, and clearly foul from another angle. Foul ended up being the correct call, once they found the right angle to look at, and could see the ball go behind the pole and foul, but it was a tough call, and impossible to guess without a few replay angles. At least the rules now allow for the replay, otherwise it would be a nightmare!

For whatever reason, the Mets have always had orange foul poles as opposed to bright yellow. That might work for Minn. I didn't see the play in question though.

I saw the ball go behind the building, bounce off something (didn't see what, although I know it wasn't the foul pole) and then head back into play.

Well, it was a great Opening Day in the Bronx. A nice standing ovation for Matsui both as he got his ring and as he came up for his first at bat. It was also nice to see Bernie Williams throw the first pitch....even if it was a shitty throw

Yankees 7, Angels 5. :techman:

Andy Petitte was on his game today, although David Robertson nearly blew it giving up the grand slam to (former Yankee!) Bobby Abreu. He was shaky today.

Then again, it was another opportunity for Mo to close the door, which he did.

I was at the Blue Jays home opener last night. Was fun, even though they blew it in the ninth, and great to be in there the one time all year they'll have a sellout crowd.

And my Creatures got their time in the sun as well. They even interviewed Queen Tina herself! :techman:

Yeah, he BOUNCED it. The hell? It's BERNIE, for cryin' out loud! :wtf:

I thought it was really cool how Hideki got the standing ovation, and how the guys all crowded around him and hugged him. I hope the fans are as nice to Johnny Damon when the time comes...

Well, today should be a good day for baseball for me. Heading into the Bronx for my first game in the new Yankee Stadium :D

Not what you keep saying when you bring it up, though. The other thread is closed, so harder to quote from, but here's what you had last time:

God help him when he has his first at-bat at Yankee Stadium in a Tiger uniform.

Seems like you're expecting something, especially when you keep bringing it up. Unless the "Creatures" are comprised mostly of trolls, not sure why he'd be booed. You guys dumped HIM, not the other way around. And not like he went to the enemy for more money, like with Boston. If Yankees fans have any class at all, it'll be a standing ovation, without a single boo. Guess we'll see...

Fuck...Rockies won on a walk-off HR in the 10th. :scream:

Oh well, at least the Mets didn't get their asses kicked like they did last night. They lost, but it wasn't an upset.

Today's Giants game against the Pirates was a lesson in complete and utter dominance. Aubrey Huff pulled off an inside-the-park home run, Aaron Rowand and Eli Whiteside each knocked runs in with long shots, and Jonathan Sanchez only allowed 3 hits, no runs and sent 11 Pirates to the bench with strikeouts. It was a beautiful day at the park in San Francisco, and even more beautiful to see my Giants lay down some serious ownage first hand. At barely over 2 hours, the game left me wanting more...time to schedule another day off from work. :)

Agreed. You couldn't ask for a more perfect day than what was had at AT&T. Really looking forward to this weekend and the rivalry renewed against the Dodgers. I will be very happy with a 2 out of 3, or even a sweep. So far, loving what the Giants are doing, but know full well it's still early. It's still fun to watch though.

I do feel bad for Huff. He's been running a lot and hard during this entire series and he's getting a first hand lesson in AT&T Park's only flaw. It doesn't treat left handed pitchers not named Barry Bonds well.

Damn, I thought Joba would get the save! Oh well, it was worth it just to see Phil Hughes start and Scott Kazmir flounder.
