MLB Offseason - The Hotstove League

Well would not say they got K-Rod for a discount, however, Minaya is doing a good job of restocking the bullpen.

He originally wanted 5 years 75 million and we got him for 37. Sure sounds like a discount to me. Omar has earned that extension he got at the end of last season.

Well I see that more of a market correction more then a supposed discount. I don't think it was realistic that he would get a five year deal from anyone. It was a good signing however, even though with K-Rod, his delivery always worries me.

The Twins aren't doing anything either. They keep talking about filling some of their needs, but so far it's only been talk. I know they can't afford the big name players, but there should be a few out there that'd fit their budget.

Brian Cashman woulda gave him a 6 year deal. He loves bidding against himself and then overpaying.

:lol::lol: True, true. I still can't believe the contract they gave Sabathia. That is insane.

Anywho...any Sox fans see the new jerseys today? I don't like the new hat, but the new standard road jerseys are AWESOME.

I love the new alternate uni. I've been hoping they'd come up with a blue alt with red lettering for years.

The new road uniform is a little meh, but it works. Same for the new hat.

The Yankees are fucking ubsurd. I know as a Red Sox fan I sound like a hypocrite saying this, but the difference between there payroll and the rest of the league is shocking, and pretty pathetic. The other 26 teams, well most of them, can compete every year with a reasonable payroll, yet the Yankees feel like they can buy practically every free agent out there by drastically overpaying. I mean yes the Red Sox payroll is one of the higher ones, but the difference between theirs and the Yankee's is almost 80 Million dollars. Unreal.

I love the Mets getting K-Rod for only 3 years. He is a shutdown closer right now, but his diminishing velovity and violent mechanics worry me. They can always resign him.

I also like the Putz deal. He was solid in Baltimore before ending up with the horrid Mariners last year. I didn't realize he already had more than 100 career saves.

Getting rid of Heilman was a good move. He never quite fit in the bullpen. I hope he gets the chance to start elsewhere. I never understood why they were so adamant about him being a reliever.

As for the CC move - the Yanks severely overpaid him to overcome his NL, west coast preference. I question them signing him for 7 years. He has thrown a lot of innings the past 2 years and the Brew Crew beat him like a rented mule knowing they wouldn't resign him. And he's totally obese. I can't see him producing huge numbers over the length of the contract.

actually even with the aquisition of burnett and cc the yankees payroll is 50 million less than last year.i think fans are jealous of the yankees. the fact of the matter is that other teams could spend the big bucks for players as well but choose to put the money in their pockets rather than spend it putting a quality product on the field.you really shouldnt talk as your red sox payroll is right up there with the yankees.

Wrong, it is not. The Yankees went from having a payroll of 210 Million dollars, and taking 80 off the books brings it down to one thirty. Add back in the 22 million per for CC, and the 18 million for Burnett, and you get 170 million ish, and they are still looking to add, so it could go back over 200 Mil. The Red Sox payroll last year was about 135 Million. This off season it is down to 85 million, and if you want to add back in the payrolls of all the arbitration eligible FA, the payroll is $110 mil. But since many of the arbitration eligible FA are not coming back, I will round down to about 100 mil, just for the sake of discussion. Now, if they get Teixiera at the upper rate of his contract, say 25 mil per year, their payroll is still only 125 million dollars. Hell last year the Red Sox were fourth in payroll, behind the Tigers and the Mets.

Im sorry Yankee fans do not realize this, but they do business differently from all the other teams in the league. We are not jealous of the Yankees, not at all, why would be? They can afford to overpay, and god DO they overpay, by a lot. On CC they were practically betting against themselves. They have to do it this way, because their farms system lags behind those of other contenders when it comes to producing MLB prospects.

I know the Red Sox are not hurting for money, and they can spend, when they choose to, which is not always. However, the difference between the rest of the league and the Yankees is huge. They operate on another world. Thats why I laughed when I read the Yankees wanted the Brewers to pay some of Mike Cameron's contract when they were proposing a deal for Melky Cabrera. If I was the Brewers I would have laughed in their faces.

Get your shit together, Atlanta! I know you're sitting on more money than you know what to do with. Quit training great prospects and then getting rid of them, and MAKE BETTER DEALS!

hmmmmm..... well lets see.... 26 world championships , maybe?:guffaw:

Not one of them was in the last 8 years. When they won championships, their payroll was a bit more reasonable and their farm system didn't suck ass.

it still doesnt change the fact that they have won 26. or that they are still among the elite teams in the american league.except for 2008 the yankees have been in the playoffs for 13 years straight . how many other teams can say that?:p

And yet everyone still hates them...

They have done jack shit since 2000, and while other teams show how to win with draft picks, prospects, and smart management, the Yankees just throw money at the problem. But its not their fault, their farm system sucks so much they have no other choice.
