I still wish the Sox had managed to land a big bat, because their pitching (especially the bullpen) and defense are great, but the offense will probably be lacking a little bit.

well, if they need a big bat they could always resign manny!:guffaw:

I find it incredibly odd that Manny doesn't have a job yet, given what he did for the Dodgers last year. I know we live in tough times, but no team is interested in this bonafide big bat. I would love it if the Giants got him, but then you run the risk of having another Zito incident, and that was also a Boras signing too.

they're interested in him, but on shorter deals than he wants. His little stunt on his way out of Boston proved that he'll absolutely quit on his team if he's not happy, so why lock him into a long term deal and remove the incentive to perform?

When he was playing for a contract, he managed to behave and hit the shit out of the ball. THAT'S what teams want, and for him, playing for a contract seems to be the only incentive that works.

i guess his bad rep has come home to haunt him. it would be something if spring training begins and he isnt playing for anyone.i still think the dodgers will sign him but maybe the mets are still in the mix.btw, anybody know what day pitchers and catchers report to camp?

Mets agree in principal to a 3 year deal with Ollie Perez. I would have rather they signed someone more consistent, but I know what I'm in for with him.

He looked more mature and less erratic last year. I can't take the roller coaster of a 7 inning, 2 hit performance followed by a 4 inning, 6 walk bullpen drainer the next time out.

They still need a #5 guy. Have they signed any old retreads to a spring training invite or are they looking at a bunch of minor leaguers?

Edit: Just remembered they signed Tim Redding for that role.

they signed former yankee and braves pitcher matt desalvo, former brewers reliever valerio de los santos, and right handed starter tony armas to minor league contracts.
as of right now only 9 days 15 hrs and 30 minutes till pitchers and catchers!

I still can't decide which of the two young Texas catchers would work better with the Sox. Anyone know more about them?

Teagarden is the more polished of the two, is pretty good defensively and offensively. Saltalamachia is projected to be a better hitter however, yet there are questions about his defense at the catcher position.

I would take either.

Looks like Manny rejected the Dodgers' officer. What the hell is wrong with this guy, anyway?

One, it's Manny being Manny.

Two, Scott Boras is the anti-Christ. You know the term "addition by subtraction"? Well Boras dying would be just that.

Of course, if no team is willing to shell out what Manny thinks he deserves, then they'll cry collusion like with Barry Bonds.

I think Manny rejected the Dodgers' offer more because it was just a one-year deal. He wants more years, and he's not going to get them. The most anyone will probably offer him are two years.

^ Well the last deal he rejected was, what, three years?
Can't remember. That was the Dodgers' original offer, right? That was a lot earlier in the offseason, Boras probably advised him to hold off and see what sort of bidding competition could get started.

Talk about a plan backfiring.

The original offer was two years for 45 million.

I don't see him getting more than two years, although someone will probably toss him 55 million for that time period.

I can see some surprise team jumping in an throwing the money at them. Texas has done that from time to time. Anaheim could afford him. The Cubs maybe if they get their ownership straightened out.

I think his tank job in Boston hurts him more than his 2 month rampage in LA. I think teams are worried that he will tune out if he isn't getting his way and the team is struggling.

I can't seem him sitting out totally.

Me either, he'll go somewhere.

Although even with quiting on the Sox, if he wasn't also 37, he'd have the money already.

Texas is being a little more conservative these days. They signed Omar Visquel and Eddie Guardado to minor leage contracts with invitations to spring training. They are interested in Ben Sheets, but are weary of his health status. They're getting some decent veterans and building up their farm system.

The Alex Rodriguiez situation has made them more cautious in signing big names.

I really don't care anymore. Anyone realize we're at the one year anniversary of the chaos on Capital Hill, which happened last Valentines Day morning. The whole Roger Clemans "Mis-remembering" saga? Then we got to the season and it was pretty much steroid and HGH free. Unfortunately the Super Bowl is over and there really isn't any news because the media once again is making this issue a lot bigger than it really is.
