By unload Uggla I simply mean they will make the final payment. He actually has two more years.

Uggla's extension with Atlanta ran through 2015. He has one more year.

Also, I'm just going to leave this here.

Gotta love those blasts from the past articles like that..... so full of hope. Freeman is the only player that is still a Brave in that article. Especially now that J-Hey has been traded to the Cards. But the "Mighty Phillies"..... how they have fallen.

Chuckle.

ESPN does love its hyperbolic prose, but some of it doesn't age very well.

Raul Ibanez, Kevin Cash and Don Wakamatsu are the finalists to replace Joe Maddon as manager of the Tampa Bay Rays.

Dave Martinez, the Rays' bench coach for the past seven seasons, was among seven candidates dropped Friday. Also cut were Barry Larkin, Doug Glanville, Manny Acta, Craig Counsell, Charlie Montoyo and Ron Wotus.

What an interesting last three, I would go with Don Wakamatsu but thats me.

This is the strangest fucking list. Ibanez isn't even retired, Cash is 36 years old with two years of coaching experience, Wakamatsu is ... well, Wakamatsu. And of the guys who dropped but still interviewed, Glanville's been a venture capitalist since he retired, Larkin is a TV talking head, Acta was a joke in his first go-around, Counsell's been working in Milwaukee's front office, Charlie Montoyo spent precisely three weeks in the majors, and Wotus ... well, I can understand giving Wotus an interview.

There was talk that if Martinez didn't get the TB job, Maddon might bring him in to Chicago.

I can't find the story now, but I think the theory was he could be the new batting coach.

And depending on who TB does hire, Maddon might grab some of his former coaches from down there.

Highly unlikely. Renteria's coaching staff has been retained and it was a condition for Maddon to accept the job.

The biggest red flag for me is Bill Mueller's resignation from a while back -- he was the hitting coach who got Rizzo and Castro straightened out, and Mueller quit because the team fired his assistant. I'm not liking that at all.

And now Mueller is in St. Louis.

I'm sure the story I read (on yahoo.com I think) said the coaching staff isn't set in stone.

ETA: here it is, story is from Nov.20

Russell Martin to Toronto, 5 / 82.

Um.

What.

So much for the Cubs being the "most likely" to sign him. Though a 31 year old catcher is probably a pretty big risk.

Especially when he's a 31-year-old catcher with a history of knee and back injuries, who just so happened to have a banner year (out-performing all of his career norms) at the same time as he hit free agency.

Toronto can have him.

The Toronto media seems pretty happy to gloss over those points and tell us how we got one of the big stars of free agency, especially due to the dearth of any other good catchers out there. I wonder how their tune will change when his knees blow out?

The guy I feel bad for is Dioner Navarro. He came in here and proved to be a capable bat in this line-up, nothing superstar, but still stellar and after one year, the team has given him a big middle finger with the Martin signing.

Navarro's bat was quite literally league-average last year and he has a cooked noodle of an arm. Martin will be an upgrade over him (until his knees explode).

^ At which point he might still be better than Navarro, only much shorter.

Think Bill Veeck sending a midget up to bat.

ETA:
Former catcher Henry Blanco added as "quality assurance coach", whatever the hell that is.

Story

Hell yeah, Hank White is back.

Basically, a quality assurance coach coordinates practice and training schedules, assists with series preparation, and also acts as an opposing scout -- watching the team as an opponent would and looking for patterns, flaws and gaps that the opposing team would try to exploit.

It looks like Hanley Ramirez is returning to Boston on a 5-year, $90 million deal. And the rumors say that the Red Sox are still serious about signing Sandoval. Maybe they want to put Hanley in left field? If that's the case, I expect Cespedes to be playing elsewhere in 2015.

That's the assumption. Little confused, but Hanley at that price is a good deal, so will see what happens. Hopefully he's in left if Panda comes, or no Panda. Unless it's a retarded steal, don't want Xander going anywhere for a long time...

Basically, if they're getting both Ramirez and Sandoval, either Bogaerts or Betts is out of a job. There's really no possible way around that one. Even in a magical what-if world in which they trade Cespedes and Victorino to clear space, that still either has Hanley at short blocking Bogaerts, or Betts being roughly 6th on the outfield depth chart behind Hanley / Castillo / Craig / Nava / Holt. They still have Jackie Bradley, Jr., kicking around, too, and it's not like they're going to bury Nava and just eat the $26 million they still owe Craig.

Think your math is off there. Sandoval at 3B, Hanley LF, Bogaerts SS. Castillo CF, Betts RF.

Cespedes has to go, for sure. Nava likely also goes. Vic is 4th/5th OF at this point, can't trust his health. Napoli is a potential to trade if they decide they are stuck with Craig. Holt is your utility IF, Craig is the other loose end. to be sure, Boston won't get rid of one of their two top prospects just to clear space for the scraps you mentioned. JBJ goes to Pawtucket. Also still Middlebrooks to figure out, but he can be optioned to the minors as well.

Obviously still a lot of moving parts, and a trade for a SP has got to be on the plan somewhere, but it's an interesting move at least. Sets them up for Ortiz and Napoli to eventually be out of the lineup, enough spots to figure out for now.

But Cespedes should pack his bags. Since he said he wasn't really planning to stay anyway, not sure he ever unpacked.

Snagged two hitters this morning (pending Sandoval being official), would love to see the evening news report Lester signed and Hamels traded for. Then we can take the rest of the winter off, stop following the trade rumors :)
