MLB Offseason 2014-15: Wait, pitchers and catchers report WHEN?

Think your math is off there. Sandoval at 3B, Hanley LF, Bogaerts SS. Castillo CF, Betts RF.

Cespedes has to go, for sure. Nava likely also goes. Vic is 4th/5th OF at this point, can't trust his health. Napoli is a potential to trade if they decide they are stuck with Craig. Holt is your utility IF, Craig is the other loose end. to be sure, Boston won't get rid of one of their two top prospects just to clear space for the scraps you mentioned. JBJ goes to Pawtucket. Also still Middlebrooks to figure out, but he can be optioned to the minors as well.

Pro baseball is not like playing OOTP against the computer. You can’t just wave a magic wand and make Cespedes, Bradley, Victorino, Craig, Nava and Napoli all disappear for quality returns. If you're sending JBJ and Middlebrooks to AAA, they're clearly not having them in the plans since they're being buried behind huge money.

You're the one implying they all have to be for big returns, not me. Cespedes should be worth something to a contender for sure, but the rest? Meh. In a big market, you don't have to count pennies as much on that part. Bradley can wait in AAA, Vic is in the last year and has no value, so will be a 4th OF type. Nava may get squeezed out by Craig, so may have to go, but doesn't make anything, so cutting doesn't hurt. Craig is the only one making real money that we're stuck with past this coming season. Napoli they actually aren't looking to move, just tossed his name in as an option because of the 1B logjam behind him. RH power has value, maybe they swing something. But they're happy keeping him, no issues there.

Actually, really no sunk cost here other than Craig. Cespedes will move as part of a trade for either SP or some prospect package (doesn't have to be elite #1, nor will it be).

I guess I just don't get your point. They gotta move Cespedes, Nava likely is a casualty or moved to some small market team for a low prospect best case. Bradley and Middlebrooks are either trade filler or just waiting in AAA for an opening now. They've got options, it's not a problem. There's a lot of OF, but pretty flexible with most of them. Honestly think BOS won't swing a trade for a SP at some point? They won't go into spring training with everyone we're talking about...

I am so happy the love affair this team has with Brett Lawrie is over. His potential was far too wasted by his constant injury battles.

I don't know much about Donaldson to be frankly honest.

He's not great, but he's good. The thing is that he's had a very strange career arc that makes him very difficult to project, moving forward. It's a good trade for Toronto, though, considering that Lawrie has the worst makeup in baseball and the prospects they sent to Oakland are all dogshit. I'm half-expecting Donaldson to suddenly develop symptoms of schizophrenia and spend an indefinite amount of time on the 60-day DL or something, because this is a bizarre trade for Beane to make unless he doesn't view Donaldson as an elite defender / offensive force moving forward (but even if that were the case, almost literally every other team in the league could have beat the package Toronto put together).

I don't understand this trade.

Face of the franchise for a bunch of spare parts. Barf.

Mariners sign Nelson Cruz to 4 / 57, because Jack Z is either insane or stupid, I guess.

Or both.

Maybe it is easier to get "special" supplements in Seattle.

It's more that it's insane to give four years to a guy who turns 35 in July, who hit a career-high HR total in his contract year and had a second-half slash line of .249 / .306 / .463.

For perspective, Victor Martinez's 2014 batting average was higher than Cruz's 2014 on-base percentage.

So Nick Markakis is a Brave and that's nice I guess. Are the Braves going to try to be contenders now? Are they going to end up paying Upton to stay in LF now? I'm completely lost at what the strategy is here at this point.

I'm not even sure they have one. 4 / 44 for Markakis isn't the worst deal, but it in no way fills the gap left by Heyward other than "this guy plays his position" and I'm glad the O's aren't on the hook for that kind of money.

Hopefully they will put the savings on Cruz and Markakis to good use, seeing as how the "Sid Thrift Confederate money" days are over.

Well, Dan Duquette is an idiot and Angelos is still an utter piece of shit, but we'll see. As I've been saying for the past six months, this is a terrible free agent year, which is why guys like Martin and Sandoval got ludicrous overpays -- I mean, the best bats remaining on the market are, what, Melky fuckin' Cabrera and the corpses of Raul Ibanez and Jason Giambi.

Torii Hunter has returned to the Twins. Linky
I'm glad that Torii Hunter will be back, but I keep hoping the Twins will make a significant move in the offseason. As much as I've always liked Hunter, he's a little past his prime. Maybe his leadership ability will help though.

More power too him :). One of my favorite A's of all time, although I can never forgive for signing with the :censored: Yankees.
