And on an even more disturbing note, what appear to be the REAL Miami Marlins unis are now leaking to the net. I won't even post pictures of the damn things. Let's just say they are not much better than the fake ones I mentioned earlier. And yes, there's orange. :barf:

Those aren't leaks, the unveiling was yesterday. And yeah, they're pretty awful. Their original look was my favorite and the emphasis on black over teal in recent years was not so hot.

Not until about 8 or 9 that night. Check the date on my last message. ;)

If they'd just get rid of that damn ORANGE uniform, that wouldn't be so bad. I suppose we can start hoping that one will be a rarely-used alternate uni.

Jonathan Papelbon to the Phillies. Reportedly for four years and around $50 million.

Damn. I kinda figured he wouldn't be back with the Sox, but it still sucks. Oh well. Have fun, NL East. :p

I ... but ... wait ... what?

Four-year contracts for relief pitchers is "going full retard" territory, and four years vesting to five (and according to Jon Heyman, the vesting option is so easy to activate that the requirement might as well just be "is still alive") on a good-not-great closer entering his age 31 season for huge money is well beyond that and just complete and utter

.

The Phillies, via a relief pitcher and a first baseman who probably won't play this year, will have just about as much money tied up in two players as the entire lowest team payroll in Major League Baseball next season. :wtf:

I completely agree with you, Timby. I'm gonna miss Papelbon, but the Phillies can have him for a contract of that length and for that much money. No relief pitcher's worth that.
Out of all of them, I kinda like the orange.
Yeah, I actually think the orange one looks pretty good.

So the Florida Marlins are now officially the Miami Marlins? I kinda liked it the old way.

I hope the Colorado Rockies never become the Denver Rockies.

The Marlins had to switch to Miami as part of the deal for their new stadium. I don't see the Rockies rebranding in such a manner unless they have to do something similar.
^ Which means the Marlins' abbreviation is now MIA.
I think that would apply more to their fanbase than the team itself. ;)

I think 'Miami Marlins' sounds better, anyway--and it fits better with the new image they're trying to build, with their attempts to appeal to the Latin American market.

Word is that the Cardinals have dug in at 210/9 for Pujols, the same deal that caused him to cut off talks until after the season.

The sad thing is, $23MM AAV is really the best Albert should get. I don't care that he's a generational talent, but he's going into his age 32 season, has had multiple elbow surgeries (and plenty of elbow problems alongside that), plus his history of plantar fasciitis -- which itself is degenerative, and doesn't get better.

The offer from the Marlins was apparently 234/9, but I can't imagine Jeffrey Loria, even with a new stadium, is interested in forking out that kind of cash even after the stadium was gifted to him.

The club that signs him to 300/10 (which is apparently what his agents are throwing around to suitors as an ideal number) is going to have an absolute albatross of a deal, the likes of which have never been seen in MLB, by 2016.

His agents are crazy if they actually expect someone to drop $300 million on a guy who's already starting to break down.

Word is that the Cardinals have passed on Jose Oquendo in favor of Mike Matheny for their managerial vacancy.

Given Oquendo's close relationship with Pujols, that seems like a tacit admission that they're going to lose him. In any event, generally speaking, hiring people with no lower-level managing experience whatsoever is a rather terrible idea, because they don't have the basic optimal strategies down. At this point, the Cards are basically hoping Matheny has played a lot of Strat-O-Matic or whatever so he knows when to pull a double-switch and those sorts of things.

Why is that funny? There are lots of sports teams in Miami that use MIA.

Well, you see, MLB just thinks that every team deserves a new stadium, no matter what, so now that the Marlins got theirs, he's free to make fun of the fanbase (or lack thereof) which made a new stadium a completely insane idea in the first place.

^ I'm not making fun of Marlins fans. If I gave that impression, I take it back. I just thought it was odd that any team would *want* to have an abbreviation like 'MIA', lest the inevitable jokes come down on them. Plus I didn't know any other teams used it (I only follow baseball).

As for the Cardinals: it's official, Mike Matheny is the new manager.

You've never heard of the Miami Dolphins or the Miami Heat or the Miami Hurricanes or the Miami International Airport?
