MLB Chatter 2008

How long have you been following the Braves, Star? They regularly attracted attendance less than half of tonight's game in the 70s and early 80s. One year they averaged barely 6,000 fans a game. That's AVERAGED, for the whole season. As iffy as the Marlins' attendance has been, their WORST year they had over 10,000 per game. The Braves had five years below that in a decade. You could buy a ticket in the upper deck and move down and have the stadium practically to yourself by the 6th inning.

So 10,000 for a game isn't even in the same universe as worst attended game ever (I think the Marlins had 700 for a game last year, and I don't even think that is the worst).

I was talking about for this year. I know the Braves used to be a joke. I was just making a joke because the Marlins currently have the worst attendance record in MLB again right now.

So what? I've seen this made a big deal before (like with El Duque), but seriously, so what? Yeah, they lied, but who really cares? All that should matter is if he plays good or not.

The "so what?" for the Astros would be that instead of getting a guy who may be 30, he's 32. Doesn't seem like a big deal, but age is definitely a factor in getting contracts, expectations as players age and performance declines, etc. If you suddenly discover your shortstop who was slightly declining is further along age-wise than you thought, it would make you wonder how much left he has.

If you bought a used car and it had 30,000 more miles on it, it might not be a big deal, but you sure as hell might have thought a little harder about it before buying it if you knew that initially.

On the other hand, you love old baseball guys, Emh. The older and more decrepit, the better. ;)

I think the big deal is that you have someone already plastered all over the Mitchell Report and in legal hell for it being cornered by E:60 (Great show, by the by, and not because one can oggle ESPN's Rachel Nichols) and thus forced to admit he was lying about something. As an organization, the Astros have to be asking themselves what else Miggy has been keeping secrets about.

The used car analogy that coaster made pretty much sums it up. Houston may have gotten a great player, but the age of Tejada was reflected in the price they paid for him. Any future trades they may make involving him will certainly reflect his true age.

Is this Padre/Rockie game ever going to end. It's the bottom of the 17th inning right now with 2 outs. I guess San Diego and Colorado really did want to play two games.

We're now heading into the 20th inning for anyone who is still awake. I hope they play all night. That would be awesome. On the east coast people are waking up and the game is like in the 27th inning. That would rock. :guffaw:

We've got a final. 2-1 Rockies in 22 innings. Kind of sucks that it didn't go longer. I was rooting for Padre to get that run. Oh well. Time for bed.

Got back from Progressive Field a little while ago. I went with some folks from work who are Boston fans.

Which one is Progressive? I hate these corporate named stadiums. I don't care about the name itself, but they change so often as companies get bought, go bankrupt, etc.

Good to see that Manny is Manny, as always.

Especially tonight. :)

Yes, very nice, very nice.

Evidently there was a bit of humor from the YES announcers on the second home run. They talked about the pitch sequence, saw the indication of a fastball inside, and said "Well they are going inside, lets see what happens." Then Manny launched it half a mile, and they go "And that's what happens...C YA!"

And in other good news, Josh Beckett looks like the Beckett of 2007. Bad news for the rest of the AL.:D

Holy crap! 22 innings? When I went to bed it was in the 13th inning. They played a whole game's worth after that. The poor pitchers!

If that's not the record, it has to be pretty damn close.

Longest game since 1993, when Cleveland beat Minnesota in 22 innings.

I can't imagine sitting through a 22 inning game. I once went to a game down in Milwaukee that lasted 17 innings, and that seemed to go on forever. It was an afternoon game and we barely made it to the bars in time for last call.

On the plus side, San Diego's bullpen and starting hitting are going to be totally gassed today, so the Diamondbacks will have an easier time of it.

On the minus side, I was really hoping to get to see Jake Peavy go up against the D-Backs this series. I didn't know he was playing yesterday.

Ah well. I'll take the good with the bad.

Yeah, something like that can be pure hell to sit through. Especially when the beer stops being served one-third of the way through the ultimate length of the game. Longest I've watched in person was a pair of 12-inning games and those seemed to last forever. I've watched some of the longer ones on tv and that's not as bad. You can move around more at home, nice and comfy chair, free food and drink (better food and drink), etc.

Longest game in minor league history was 33 innings between Pawtucket and Rochester. There have been a number of 22, 23 inning games.

Longest AL game: 25 innings, Chicago-Milwaukee 1984 (watched most of that one)
Longest NL game: 26 innings, Brooklyn-Boston 1920 (missed that one, and it ended in a tie)

Best extra inning game ever was Braves-Mets, July 4, 1985. It was delayed by rain over 90 minutes and the Mets rallied in the ninth to send it to extras. In the bottom of the 18th inning, down by 1 run, and with no position players left, Braves pitcher Rick Camp went to the plate as a pinch hitter. He was a .074 batter or something during his career. He was a TERRIBLE hitter. Boy, oh, boy...that guy hit a game-tying HR. He proceeded to get killed in the 19th and the Mets won at around 4 a.m. There were supposed to be fireworks after the game and despite the late hour, they went ahead and shot 'em off anyway. People went nuts in the area surrounding the stadium about that. Hilarious. Watched that entire game, never knowing it would be one for the ages.
