"Happy pre-Bonilla Day!! July 1st is the annual celebration of Bobby Bonilla snagging a killer contract. It's a not so inside, inside joke, but the beer is not a joke. This serious baby clocks in at 8.3% abv with Sabro, Mosaic, and Strata hops. It's big, its juicy, and it's out tomorrow! In cans 7/1 afternoon at East and on tap in the afternoon. Cans and tap will be at West on Wednesday when we open as well. Stock up on some tasty things for your 4th of July celebrations."

I’m at the Fourth of July Long Island Ducks game tonight. Here for the baseball and fireworks after the game. Jackie Bradley Jr. is the starting center fielder.

Wei-Yin Chen is also on the Ducks. There are a lot more MLB veterans in the minors and independent ball than you would think. Daniel Murphy's a three-time all-star who was with the Ducks last year.

Brandon Phillips played independent ball into his 40s. John Halama's big league career ended in his mid-30s and I was surprised to see him still pitching until 40. For love of the game? One last hope for one more chance?

How 'bout that Ben Rice, huh?

I wonder what Sterling's HR call would have been. "The Rice-man Cometh?" "Uncle Ben Rice"?

Cubs relief pitcher Colten Brewer punched the dugout wall in frustration after a bad outing and is now on the 60-day injured list with a broken left hand.

I'm having flashbacks of Huascar Ynoa.

Spraking of which, whatever happened to Huascar Ynoa? ;)

Philadelphia sports radio broadcaster Howard Eskin, 73, has been banned from Citizens Bank Park for the rest of the season, as well as the 76ers training facility and Wells Fargo Center for the upcoming season, for making unwanted advances toward an Aramark (food service) employee, including an unwanted kiss.

Today marks the first all-female broadcast crew in MLB history. Beth Mowins, Elise Menaker and Taylor McGregor. (Cubs)
I heard Beth Mowins do a Florida State football game last season and I remember thinking that there was something unusual about her: then I realized that she was actually paying attention to the game instead of filling the air with mindless chatter with her broadcast partner.

Apologies in advance for double posting. I'm still working on the multi-quote feature. Quality of play in the non-affiliated (independent) leagues is pretty darn good, even in the Pioneer League which is pretty far down the ladder. Anyone who's interested in baseball below the major league level should check out John Feinstein's "Where Nobody Knows Your Name" which recounts the adventures of players, managers, broadcasters and umpires at the Triple A level. Playing conditions and salaries have improved in the affiliated leagues, but it's still a hard, Darwinian struggle to make it to The Show.

Paul Skenes was pulled after 7 innings of no-hit ball, 1BB, 11K, 99 pitches.

At least they seem to be trying not to destroy his career or eventual trade value too quickly.

Pittsburgh Pirates rookie ace Paul Skenes is disrupting the betting market, causing odds to move dramatically overnight and even prompting one sportsbook to halt betting on the National League Rookie of the Year altogether, figuring the race was already decided.
Poor, poor betting market

Also, Skenes has been named the NL starter for the ASG.

Dustin May, who hasn't played all season for the Dodgers, is now done for the season following esophageal surgery.

Ingrid Andress, who performed a very, uh, interesting rendition of the National Anthem at the Home Run Derby last night, has announced that she was drunk during the performance and is entering treatment for substance abuse.

Damn. Baseball advertising gets zero penetration in my house. I didn't know it was the All-Star break.
