I’m at the Fourth of July Long Island Ducks game tonight. Here for the baseball and fireworks after the game. Jackie Bradley Jr. is the starting center fielder.
 
Wei-Yin Chen is also on the Ducks. There are a lot more MLB veterans in the minors and independent ball than you would think. Daniel Murphy's a three-time all-star who was with the Ducks last year.

Brandon Phillips played independent ball into his 40s. John Halama's big league career ended in his mid-30s and I was surprised to see him still pitching until 40. For love of the game? One last hope for one more chance?

I heard Beth Mowins do a Florida State football game last season and I remember thinking that there was something unusual about her: then I realized that she was actually paying attention to the game instead of filling the air with mindless chatter with her broadcast partner.
 
Apologies in advance for double posting. I'm still working on the multi-quote feature. Quality of play in the non-affiliated (independent) leagues is pretty darn good, even in the Pioneer League which is pretty far down the ladder. Anyone who's interested in baseball below the major league level should check out John Feinstein's "Where Nobody Knows Your Name" which recounts the adventures of players, managers, broadcasters and umpires at the Triple A level. Playing conditions and salaries have improved in the affiliated leagues, but it's still a hard, Darwinian struggle to make it to The Show.
 
Paul Skenes was pulled after 7 innings of no-hit ball, 1BB, 11K, 99 pitches.

At least they seem to be trying not to destroy his career or eventual trade value too quickly.

Ingrid Andress, who performed a very, uh, interesting rendition of the National Anthem at the Home Run Derby last night, has announced that she was drunk during the performance and is entering treatment for substance abuse.
