MLB 2024: Baseball is for Everyone (subject to local blackout restrictions)

Willie Mays has a pretty good case as the #1 defensive outfielder of all time. Most of the numbers favor Andruw Jones, but defensive metrics are notoriously sketchy and Mays is right there.

Five will get you ten that Fox Sports makes a huge fucking deal about it during the All-Star Game in a few weeks and everyone's jersey bears a #24 patch.

My local FOX station has interrupted regularly scheduled programming to air a live 'Remembering Willie Mays' special from their FOX affiliate KTVU Channel 2 Oakland.

My station ran it too. Then in the middle of the soliloquy, it suddenly cut to a commercial and a couple minutes later they announced local broadcasting is being joined in progress... which was a TV rerun.

I thought last night was one of the best Baseball telecasts I've seen in maybe a decade. I always enjoy listening to my local announcers and there are other local announcers I really enjoy, but last night was all about learning the history of the game and Fox did an outstanding job. I loved the inning where they televised it as if it was 1954, and was shocked that they don't utilize split screen today, especially when it comes to sac flies. I also could listen to Bob Kendrick read the phone book and be enthralled. They allowed him on for, what, 3 innings? That whole interview was fantastic and when I'm back in the midwest, I have to go to the Negro Leagues Museum. I was bummed the Giants lost again, but that was bigger tha

Blue Jays top hitting prospect Orelvis Martinez, who was just called up, gets an 80-game PED suspension over a fertility drug a Dominican Republic clinic prescribed to him. He and his girlfriend had been trying to start a family.

Uh... something doesn't sound right there.

The drug he got popped for is prescribed to stimulate ovulation in women.

It's also one of the most common things people take when they're coming off a steroid cycle.

Meanwhile, Edwin Diaz gets tossed for having ROSIN on his hand. Go figure.

If your hand looks like this after handling rosin and you haven't done something like changing your motor oil, I would strongly advise seeking medical attention.

The Giants are all wearing 24 to honor Willie Mays tonight.

No word yet on if the Miami Heat will hang Mays' jersey next to Michael Jordan and Dan Marino.

...I don't get the context. Why would they do that?

I was making fun of the Heat for hanging Dan Marino and Michael Jordan's jerseys in the rafters. They have since taken them down and replaced them with just their numbers, but now Bill Russell is up there with them.

Yeah, but Bill Russell had his number retired by the league (like MLB did for Jackie Robinson), so at least there's a good reason for that. Marino and Jordan is just... eh, whatever.

I figured it was something like that but that's still weird.

The Cubs need to start doing that before fans stop going to Wrigley.

I don't think the Ricketts family really needs to worry about that. Even during the dogshit tanking years of, like, 2010 - 2014, the Cubs were still one of the highest-drawing teams in the league.

The Cubs' ERA is nearly a full run higher in the 8th inning than any other inning:

I found that out last week when it took half a :censored:ing hour to get from street level onto the :censored:ing subway platform.
