Completely unsurprising. He was always going to opt out; that's why while it was a "three-year" deal, there were opt-out clauses after each of the first two years. He took the one-year "prove it" deal because of the lockout uncertainty.

He turned 28 a little under a month ago and just put up a 140 wRC+ season, and plays a premium defensive position, there will be a solid deal for him out there. My guess is that he will look to, at an absolute minimum, match the Seager contract (10 / 325), given their similar age and track record over the same number of seasons (130 vs 129 wRC+).

The Astros are damn good at baseball. The fact that the Mariners are hanging in there and trying to keep it close is nice despite the losses.

Bruce Sutter passed away at the age of 69. He had been recently diagnosed with cancer.

Phillies minor league pitcher Corey Phelan also died from cancer at the age of 20. He had been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in April.
