Mirror universe Disturbing.

whenever i view the intro of "in a Mirror Darkly" i have to admit, it's too painful to watch for me (I'm not kidding when i say that it gave me nightmares about humanity's future) and for me to think about. even the claims that it shows us who we really are and not how Gene Roddenberry perceived us disturbs me to the point of pretending that the mirror universe had a different origin or is completely non-existent. i sometimes see this claim being brought up. why do people believe that the mirror universe is the most likely future of Humanity or Star trek when not viewed through Gene Roddenberry's lens of an optimistic and progressive future?

Actually i find the entire mirror universe too disturbing for my tastes. I usually pretend or wish that it never existed. it's really disturbing to see the way mirror universe characters act or behave. it's almost as though they are prime universe characters acting out of character.

i want to pretend that the mirror universe wasn't caused by humanity's own primal warlike nature. i really want to pretend that an alien invasion substituting WW3 and preceding vulcan first contact started this. i really wanted to disregard the prologue and intro of "in a mirror Darkly" and deem it non-canon or better, "nonexistent". I gives me anxiety everytime i watch it.

Is there anyone in the fandom who feels disturbed or lacks the gall to tolerate the mirror universe? if so, come out and let's talk

I find the mirror universe, especially as it was depicted in DS9 as waaaaaay too campy and ridiculous to take it seriously or be 'scared' by it.

The issue with the MU, especially the more it gets re-visited, is that if everyone is killing their suppeririors to get ahead there's no way the prime characters' counter parts would be in the MU working together in basically the same positions they have in the main universe.

And, other than TOS, we largely didn't see that. DS9 probably created the most differences, with ENT in close second.

We see some individuals that seem kinder than their prime universe counterpart (Quark and Brunt, for example, though Rom was not), but would there be entire races with a generally gentler disposition in the MU than in ours?

I imagine races that were conquered by the Terran Empire and subsequently freed either went the same way the Bajorans did or tried to avoid doing such things to other races themselves.

I still think the first "Deep Space NIne" mirror universe doesn't give enough credit for actually trying to do the premise in a somewhat serious take. The future followups would be just over the top fun cartoons but not the first one. I think "Discovery" was kind of going that way until Lorca went from well developed and complex leader to Micheal Bay level bad guy!

In an infinite multiverse, the chance that the MU would turn out the way that it did (with all of the characters having counterparts, serving together, etc.) is no more OR less likely than any other.

Years ago I read a theory that it was the ion storm that created the Mirror Universe! Now take that as you may but I don't accept that reasoning even if it sort of explains how everyone is virtually in their same jobs as in our universe!

I find the MU episodes mostly fun/scary, but horrifying to think of living somewhere where your most 'trusted' subordinate is likely plotting to betray or even kill you. The thought of the Agonizer as an item in everyday use is also very disturbing.

One moment that really upset me was Phlox-2's casual, even gleeful, torture of the Tholian in 'In a Mirror Darkly'. Probably because the contrast with Phlox-1's decent, humanitarian approach was so great.
Though it was a good nod back to the original where Dr McCoy describes sickbay as like a sort of torture chamber.

In the Mirror Universe Kai Winn is simply Winn Adami without titles and a loving mother of 5 children. This is what really scares me. :p

I think the ion storm provided enough energy to allow a transporter to bridge the gap between the two universes. As the storm effect fades, the transporter will need more and more energy to bridge the gap. Once the storm effect fades to a certain point, the Enterprise cannot generate enough energy to bridge the gap. It sounds like the mirror universe was already there.
SCOTT: The two-way matter transmission affected the local field density between the universes, and it's increasing. We've got to move fast.
KIRK: How fast?
SCOTT: Half hour at the most.
KIRK: If we miss?
SCOTT [OC]: We couldn't get out of here in a century.
...
SCOTT: Hardly fifteen minutes, sir. The field density between the two universes is starting to close very fast.

I was thinking of other mirror universe stuff. In the Mirror Universe I am guessing Molor became the Klingon Jesus instead of Kahless. The Dominion is like a more peaceful Federation.

It’s not disturbing, it just doesn’t make much sense. Why would there be doppelgängers when their history is so radically different. Why would their ships look so similar to that of the prime, etc.
Their universe should be radically different

Because it's the Mirror Universe, not the Totally Different Universe.

The MU falls apart under the most basic of scrutiny. It was a decent one-off idea, that's all.

I think the ENT MU episodes are fantastic. Evil Phlox is the best.
DS9's were a bit over the top at times.
TOS was great too.
They are meant to be disturbing and off putting. It's a warning that this is what we can become if we give in to our "evil" side.
But quantum physics tells us that there are infinite universes with infinite diversity. So there may well be a universe just like ours but everyone wears a red clown nose all the time.
