Mirror universe Disturbing.

I never thought about the mirror universe in that way because I always watched it as a parody. But now that I am thinking about the disturbing aspects of it, that's how I felt about The Hunger Games and The Purge. I think I prefer watching the mirror universe episodes as parodies of Star Trek

Parody isn't really an accurate word since the MU episodes aren't intended to be comedies. Not even the DS9 ones, as silly as they got.

The Intendant notwithstanding, I think the DSC mirror episodes got way sillier than the DS9 ones.

Especially MU Lorca, who could not be more obviously based on Trump if he wore a sign around his neck saying "TRUMP ANALOGUE".

That's why I call it a projected 'funhouse mirror' of ST's real universe. Its always too on the nose each time its presented to be a parallel with a realistic progression through time.

And we shall build a wall and make the romulans pay for it!

It did indeed like most Sci-Fi shows that wanted to emulate Trek, but normally it wasn't a portal to another reality!

Actually, yeah. SG-1 had the quantum mirror, basically a mirror which could be used to connect to various realities, and touching it would transport you there. Then there was the time the Stargate itself was used to hop between realities.

Hmmmm! Can't say I remember a mirror that connected them to a mirror universe! I recall the odd occasion they travelled in time and to other realities because of a glitch in the gate but not on a regular business!

There was an episode where an alternate timeline SG-1 team somehow rigged the Stargate system so that multiple SG-1 teams from multiple timelines all arrived in the Primeline when they gated to Earth.

Yes, it actually had a remote control that you could use to select which reality you wanted to go to. Daniel Jackson was even able to tell which one was the "right one" based upon Carter's rank. They also went across realities to support an uprising against Apophis.

I seem to recall them fighting an alternate Apophis! But the idea that they had a regular gateway to an alternate reality is a bit too much considering they also went back in time to 1969 as well as travelling to other planets through wormholes!

The last Stargate movie, where they had to take on Baal and finally put him down, they had to jump around realities to do it, as, IIRC, Baal had done it to set up a reality where he defeated them by going back in time to do so, and reality hopping was the only way to undo it.

I know, that's convoluted, but what do you expect from transdimensionality?

Too much or not it is there.

I do remember a poll between Star Trek and Stargate back in the day! Funny to think that Gate is no more and hasn't been for many a day!

Not exactly...Baal "initiates" a new timeline in the past that begins to replace the Primeline BttF-style and Our Heroes manage to gate out before they can be affected by the change. They end up on the altered Earth but in the same time as when they left. They then save the day by travelling back a bit further into the past to preempt Baal's plan.

IMHO, the mirror universe should have remained a TOS-only piece of 60s sci-fi kitsch. It's fairly dorky that only two universes exist, in TOS' exposition. In 1967 it may have been a big creative thing but it still feels incredibly limiting (and cliche) and even when I saw it on first viewing, new to sci-fi, it seemed grossly simple that only the real and the mirror universes existed.

DS9's mirror universe (aka "Mirrorland") episodes feel like forced crowd-pleasing fanservice, and VOY got it right in terms of finding better ways to show evil versions of the crew. DS9 had enough stuff of greatness to work in without the cheesy sidejump into Mirrorland, which to my understanding is not too far down the road from both Lidsville and Living Island. Get Benita Bizarre to draw out a map, after she's done getting Joy, Courage, Harmony, and some IQ...

DSC throws in Mirrorland despite having the amount of prior character development needed to make these things engaging at a whopping 1.31%... (that and Lorca got killed off too early, in concept it's a solid one but a little more time to develop our new characters before "the reveal" (to really show some differences and depth) would have been nicer.
