Part of the problem they now have is the actors are getting other jobs and their availability is getting harder and harder. I would not be surprised if we get a complete recast when all the parties get their crap together

Bad Robot had the cast, director, locations and everything set. Paramount refused to pay what was previously agreed to the actors, so it's dead until they either reach an agreement or something comes along they are willing to fund (likely after their Bad Robot deal expires)

they grossed about 1.2 billion dollars, more than twice the box office of the preceding five films together... epic fail.

when the next iteration of star trek films come out, they won't be judged against discovery and its eventual spinoffs (they have pretty limited reach), they'll be compared to the three modern abrams films. the first film at the very least is a high bar to clear, in terms of critical and audience reaction.

Judging by the look, they mean a great deal to Discovery. Probably more than TOS or the other spinoffs.
