I do the same thing, if my ice cream is too cold and hard. Works especially well with pints of Ben & Jerry's.

I'm incredibly impressed that so many people are able to keep ice cream in the freezer long enough for it to freeze hard enough to worry about having to soften it.

Ice cream just doesn't last that long here in Mayville.

Over here, this is the usual way it comes home from the store. If it were any softer, I doubt it would survive the trip home.

This is the most wasteful thing I have ever seen. my wife does that crap. I like my ice cream frozen so it stick to you tongue and I had it mushy and melty.

Let me clarify. The point of this practice is not to melt the ice cream into mush but to soften it just a bit which you can do in about 10 or so seconds.

People have different likes.

The whole rock-solid frozen brick thing is one of the reasons I really prefer Gelato (or similar derivations) when I can get it. That stuff can sit in my freezer for ages* and still be nigh perfectly scoopable when I take it out. It's really rich though (and expensive), so it's not for everyone.

* - I have never kept any kind of ice cream for more than 4 or 5 days. What would be the point of that?
