I kind of wish he never settled with that first kid's family. Reading about the case, it seemed like Jackson would have won.

We all remember hearing about Jackson having to strip in order to be inspected, to see if his body matched the kid's description. Supposedly, the kid claimed Jackson was circumcised, and that turned out to be false.

That whole thing was screwy, with the kid's dad sedating him in order to get the confession, etc.

At the time, Jackson said he settled in order to move on. That was a huge mistake, in my opinion.

A few years after the settlement, the kid went after Jackson again for $60 million and lost, "claiming Jackson had breached an agreement never to discuss the case."

There was a time when I thought he was guilty, but considering everything that's come out since then, it just looks like he paid off the family to make the case go away. In and of itself, it probably seemed like a wise decision at the time--best to shut them up rather than go through the stress of a trial he might lose. Let's face it, innocent people do get convicted, and is it really worth the risk if you can just pay money now to make it go away? I'd do it, if it was me.

The problem is, you do it once, everyone is going to come after you for their slice of the pie. Sooner or later you have to face up to it or you'll be bled dry. But the first time around, you're probably not thinking about that--just wanting to get it over with as quickly and painlessly as possible.

I will say what I said in '94 or whenever it was: If it was a shakedown, he could have used $20 million to fight the accusations, but he chose to use it for a payoff. By settling with the accuser and not clearing his name in court, Jackson accepted that many people would see his actions as inconsistent with those of an innocent man. There is enough evidence about Jackson's behavior with children to raise some serious questions, and many will say "No smoke without fire." Jackson was never convicted of anything, and there were some shady things about the people who accused him, but I wouldn't have let my kid within 100 yards of the guy.

It doesn't take but a fraction of critical judgment to realize that the prosecution case against Jackson was about as reliable as the prosecution case in McMartin Preschool. Or the paternity case against Charlie Chaplin. That precedent alone shows how foolish the notion that giving in to blackmail proves guilt really is.

From everything I know of the public record, there is no reason to think that Jackson did anything to any child without parental knowledge. The court case hinged upon claims that Jackson criminally pressured the parents for silence. The evidence for that was so nonexistent that observers can only conclude that it was malicious prosecution.

The assertion that Jackson is a pedophile means saying that parents delivered their children to him for that purpose. And that, at the most, some parents wanted (extra?) payment by extortion. The slander is not just against some rich black man who sounds kind of gay when he speaks.

Instead of ranting about a dead celebrity, he should go do some good in the world like getting salary increases for the very people he mentions in his rant (police, firefighters etc.). Cops in New York City can barely afford to even live in the city they have to protect. Politicians who stand on a soapbox but don't put their money where their mouth is are idiots IMO.

He did pay off one of his accusers. Why pay them off if he did nothing wrong?

If he violated their child would any amount of money be enough to not want justice? That's what people are glossing over here. No rightful parent would accept money if such damage was done to their child. They also wouldn't stop because they wouldn't want any other child to endure that either. That's what morally sound people do.

People believe he is gulity due to doubt, not actual proof.
Because the man was odd, it's was easy to believe anything said about him. However, everyone wants to bring up this but never the fact he gave millions to homeless, sick and starving children all over the world. What good deeds to that calibur has this Congressman done? In a few years you'll be reading how he was found coked up in a motel while cheating on his wife with a male prostitute.

To avoid the hassle/exposure of a trial, to make "it go away."

If the accusers really believed/KNEW the MJ did something wrong, why allow themselves to be paid off? Wouldn't they want to see justice? (And further, Law Enforcement would be obligated to prosecute pay off or no.)

The question works both ways. If Jackson knew he did nothing wrong, why make the payoff? Wouldn't he want to see justice? Why not pursue charges of extortion, or a suit for slander or defamation?

As for Michael Jackson, from what I've read his father stole his childhood and he and his brothers became the family money train instead of having normal childhoods. That's why he supposedly built Neverland Ranch to relive his childhood.
Also, how would you like it if CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS, and FOX ran new stories about you every hour on the hour telling the world you are being accused of molesting a child if you were guilty or not? How would you like to have people outside your house taking pictures of you and your family constantly?
I know if this happened to me and I could afford it guilty or not I would pay to make it go away.
