Michael Burnham is the Chosen One

I find her compelling. Must be a personal problem since outside of this echo chamber she’s fairly popular.
Are you saying TrekBBS is an echo chamber of criticism/dislike for Burnham? The significant majority of people around here like her and the show.

Outside of this place I find most people dislike her and STD.

I think when you create characters you don't necessarily know which ones are going to develop into the most interesting. Designating Michael as the lead character is risky if she doesn't become compelling. Right now it doesn't look too good.

It's like having having Tom Paris or Geordi LaForge as your main characters. Yuck.

Poor writing, as well as SMG's mediocre acting and limited range haven't helped matters either.

Obviously there's been many competent female characters through out history that weren't called Mary Sues.
Tom Paris was among the more popular characters, and one that I personally enjoyed, especially his arc. Same thing with Michael.

It's like engaging with characters is almost subjective or something...

You're apparently only allowed to view one of these series. must be a licensing issue. I don't think Ver.A viewers are able to converse in a common dialogue with Ver.B viewers.

That's right. Some people watch STD. We, on the other hand, watch DSC. I'm sorry that some people think STD sucks but it's too bad they can't give DSC a try. They might actually like it if they went into it with an open mind. But I guess we'll never know.

Well put. I'm definitely watching STD. I wish I could see this awesome DSC show you guys are watching.

STD lacks a cohesive direction, has juvenile writing, overcooked visuals, cringing inducing dialog and looks towards the past instead of the future.

It is for some people, convincing them that their opinion is far larger than it is in reality. I don’t really see that much hate outside of this forum.

God, I never want to watch STD. It sounds horrible. Not something I'd ever want to put myself through. I have to admire your dedication. I couldn't do it.

I did some traveling recently, and at one point met up with a number of thirty-something friends in Northern Ireland...a group of primarily comic book writers, artists and fans whose acquaintance I'd made on a previous visit about five years ago. All big fans of so-called "modern Trek," particularly DS9 (an enthusiasm which I, of course, don't share).

Their summary response to the current series was just disinterest. A couple had stronger opinions. No fans of the show in that group.

Most people I meet IRL, outside fandom, of course, have no idea it's even on. When a TV series has a weekly viewership of two or three million, it's really not on most folks' radar at all. Same with The Orville.

TNG made Trek into a mainstream media phenomenon in the 1990s, but by the time Enterprise was done interest had waned and the mass culture had moved on.

I like Michael, I like her character. I can see what she's trying to be and how frustrating it is when trying to turn intent into reality becomes so much more difficult than she thinks it should be. I get that.

I think Sonequa Martin-Green was a brilliant casting choice, and I say that as someone who didn't even know who she was before this role, but watching her in action? The woman clearly has talent. I'm hoping to see her more playful side this coming season, with no Klingon war over our heads to push things into the background.

“Let me tell you this anecdotal experience that once and for all dooms DIS’ chances”

I’m sure CBS knew that it would be an uphill battle to make DIS the kind of success TNG was on a brand new platform that people would have to subscribe to (aside from those who have Netflix outside the US). This is where they decided to plant their flag and will build from here, so we’ll just have to see how it plays out in the long run.

My biggest gripe is the platform itself. CBS All Access was an awful, awful streaming service for me last year. I was paying $7 a month to watch one show, and they couldn't even deliver it to me in high definition about 75% of the time.

What would looking to the future look like?
I don't know. That's what's interesting about it. I wish this franchise would explore it.

But I know what it doesn't look like: Spock, Spock's sister, the old Enterprise, Sarek, Pike ect.

How do you know what it doesn't look like if you don't know what it does look like?

You don't know what it looks like but you know what it doesn't look like?:shrug::shrug:

Pre-TOS is an era is ripe for exploration.
