I did some traveling recently, and at one point met up with a number of thirty-something friends in Northern Ireland...a group of primarily comic book writers, artists and fans whose acquaintance I'd made on a previous visit about five years ago. All big fans of so-called "modern Trek," particularly DS9 (an enthusiasm which I, of course, don't share).
Their summary response to the current series was just disinterest. A couple had stronger opinions. No fans of the show in that group.
Most people I meet IRL, outside fandom, of course, have no idea it's even on. When a TV series has a weekly viewership of two or three million, it's really not on most folks' radar at all. Same with The Orville.
TNG made Trek into a mainstream media phenomenon in the 1990s, but by the time Enterprise was done interest had waned and the mass culture had moved on.
