Michael Burnham appears in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home?

I think it would be quite problematic if, of Star Trek's pathetic handful of black female characters, two actually turn out to be the same person so we have one fewer than we even thought we had. The only connection made between the two characters in this 'theory' seems to be that they are black women who at some point were command track.

In theory I would agree but "Star Trek" has plenty of life left in it so I think we will see more and more strong black female characters in the future which means It's okay to have fun and retcon Burnham into that role if we want. What we won't have in the future is more of TOS and the Berman Trek stuff so if you can find connections to the old stuff with the new stuff then it seems like a good idea to use it if you can because it only makes the new stuff more legit if you want it to be all part of canon. For me who still is not sure if I consider the new show as canon I kind of like the idea just because it's neat idea and gives a little more depth to a character who is just in a single scene.

Much like how people tried to explain the absence of homosexual characters

If the only way to prove there are homosexuals on the ship is to show two guys french kissing in the bridge, then sure, there was an absence of homosexuals in Trek. So yeah, you could say there was an absence of homosexual romantic plotlines in Trek, but you can't prove there aren't homosexuals in the crew. Just like we know there are toilets somewhere. They just aren't shown.

Funny how often those heterosexual couples managed to 'french kiss on the bridge' though.

The real question is would this feel more shoehorned in than Burnham being Spock's sister? It does remind me of a few of my favorite fanwank theories. I think it's possible that Ensign Janeway that Troi talked to in a couple of sessions might be related to Captain Janeway. The planet Archer 4 was named after Captain Archer. Q and Guinan are related. Sisko is sent back in time by the Prophets to become Benny Russell. The Borg went back in time in "First Contact" to fulfill a pre-destination time loop in which they know they will loose but still do it so the timeline will stay intact.
