Mercy Thompson series - any one read it?

My young cousins are all into twilight (which I've yet to read - one of these days... I have seen the movies tho') and I thought that I would get them some more fantasy books so that they can "read" instead of talking endlessly about Twilight and oohing and aahing about Robert Pattinson or the muscular guy.

So I came across this series by Patricia Briggs.

Any recommendations from those of you that have read this series? Is it any good?

You might give them the first book in the Percy Jackson series "The Lightning Thief" ... similar territory to Harry Potter and/or Twilight (boy discovers he isn't the person he thought, he's descended from the Greek Gods and must go on a quest to prevent a war) complete with animal creatures, gods, other halflings, and unlike Twilight, it's written by a competent writer.

I have loved all these kind of books (and have never read Twilight). Just be careful of what you recommend to 'young' people. Alot of the genre, such as the Anita Blake books and to a lesser extent the Mercy Books, are written for ADULTS not teens and as such they contain adult themes - sex (a lot of it in some series), rape (in the mercy series) and adult relationships.
Teenagers may enjoy the Blue Blood series (can't remember the author sorry) or Gena Sholwater's new book.

PS - I love being a teacher - it gives me permission to read all the children and YA books without having to feel guilty.

Thanks for the warning about Mercy Thompson and the other book recommendations.

The thing is I won't have time to read these books (and I confess - the inclination is lacking - but it might just be the Twilight movies...) before I can gift it to them.

Much appreciated!!

I think I will go with The Vampire Diaries...

I love the Patricia Briggs series. Very well written and the stories really create a great world that I enjoy. Mercy T is a very interesting character. But it is for adults, definitely, not the Harry Potter crowd.

Is it "for adults" = sex, (rape as one poster pointed out) or is it "for adults" like the Nolan-directed The Dark Knight movie?

There was a rape. She was controlled by this creep mentally/physically and he forced her submit sexually to him. There is a situation where the werewolf leader will have to kill his son for his transgression of losing control. There is an attempted suicide and plenty of vampire and werewolf violence. I'm not familiar with the other that you mentioned so I can't speak to that.
