Meeting some of the Star Trek Cast

I have had the pleasure of meeting a few of the cast members from various ST shows and wanted to share my story.

John DeLancie
The radio station I was working at in California (in the 90's) sponsored a Convention and John DeLancie was the guest. To help promote the show, I had the pleasure of interviewing him and he was an absolute delight. I am a huge Fan of his, even back in the day when he played Eugene Bradford on 'Days of Our Lives.'

Jonathan Frakes
I was lucky enough to attend the premiere of 'First Contact' at Mann's Chinese Theater and the entire cast was there. Like the fan I am, I got to shake hands and speak briefly with various cast members from various series, including; Ethan Phillips, Robert Picardo and the very lovely Terry Ferrill. After the film, Jonathan Frakes was greeting every one as they left the theater, getting their input on the film. He was very personable and went out of his way to make sure everyone enjoyed the experience.

Robin Curtis
When I worked in Central New York (mid 80's) her brother was a sales rep at the radio station. I was a trekkie then, but not as hard core (as I am now). When I met Robin at a convention the first words out of my mouth was, "How's your brother _________." She took a moment and then asked how I knew him. We had a nice conversation. Very sweet lady.

I would love to hear any stories or moments you have had with a Star Trek Actor

Wow, you've met quite a few!

I had the privlage of meeting Terry Farrell about two years ago. In fact, she and her husband live in my home town (she is apparently semi-retired from acting and concentrating on her family life right now).

She was very nice! My wife and I went to see her and her husband in a play at a local community theater. Afterwards, we got a chance to talk to them for a while one-on-one. I didn't even mention that I was a Star Trek fan while we were talking (I didn't want to "scare" her off), and we had a great discussion about the play.

Afterwards, a mutual friend (weird that Terry and I have a mutual friend) told her I was a Star Trek fan, and she actually gave him an autographed photo of herself as Dax to give to me. She didn't have to do that, but it was very nice of her!

I keep hoping that our mutual friend will decide to throw a dinner party and invite both of us, but it hasn't happendd yet. ;)

I'd love to meet Terry again. Met her once, briefly, at an autograph signing event. She's one of my favorites though, so I'd love to see her again. She's about an hour and a half from me, over in Hershey PA area. Wish she would do some Philly conventions, they have a number of them. Wizzard, Comic, Creation. They also do Chiller just up in NYC area every 4-5 months. Alas, she doesn't appear much.

I've met so many, sharing the stories would take me forever. Almost entire TOS cast, all of TNG, all of DS9 save Colm and Cirroc, all of VGR save Jeri and Jen. Not to mention guest stars.

The Shat, Nimoy, Doohan and Koenig: very nice and funny. Terry Farrell: wasted (this was back in 1993 when she was still hard partying, lots of f-bombs, but has really gotten her act together in the past 15 years or so).

I've met two of my favorites this year: Marina Sirtis and Scott Bakula. It was a wonderful experience with both of them.

I've loved Marina ever since I first started watching TNG. She's actually one of my earliest and fondest memories related to Star Trek, so it was a dream come true for me. The experience of actually meeting somebody you admire is something very special, especially since I had never thought it would happen to me.

Anyway, I met her at a convention in Germany (FedCon - pics in my sig) during the autograph session. She was lovely and we had a rather funny conversation about my name. As I gave her the photos for the autographs, she asked me what my name was. I already had it written on a sticky note, so I gave her that and said, 'This is my name right here.' She takes a look at it and goes, 'You know, I've read I, Claudius, I know how to spell Livia' (that being my real name). I'm like, great, my fame precedes me. I say, 'Yeah, I know I have the name of a very evil woman.' She says, 'You do! She killed her relatives!' Well, I assured her that I was less criminally inclined than my ancient Roman namesake and she signed my photos.

I also enjoyed seeing her on stage for her panels. She's very entertaining, very funny and she seemed genuinely happy to be there and genuinely impressed with our enthusiasm.

With Scott, it was even better. First of all, he was amazingly nice. I almost can't believe anybody can be that nice. One of the highlights of the convention for me was hearing him sing live. Fantastic, really! Meeting him was another one, naturally. He was very warm and made you feel like he was the one excited to meet you, which was more than I expected. He shook hands, talked to people and generally acted like we were all his friends. I was very impressed with him and it was a true privilege to actually meet him. I've written more about it here, if you want the long story.

Ive met Walter Koenig but he didnt look very well when we saw him and he was a bit grumpy. Must have been ages ago for a London Expo. However Me & Hubby took my dad with us and he came away happy because walter has signed a picture saying "to lester my friend from walter"

Unfortunately i couldnt go to the London Expo when James Doohan was there but my friend got his autograph for me. Im gutted i never got met to him.

Those are great stories, Livia. I'm jealous about the Scott B meeting. I have been a huge fan of his since 'Quantum Leap.' Would love to meet him some day and thank him for the great television he has brought us.

Yes, I know. I too used to be a little jealous of people who'd gotten to meet him. The truth is that the feeling is entirely warranted. He really is great.

I have been a huge fan of his since 'Quantum Leap.'
I'm also a fan mainly because of Quantum Leap. And I'm even a bigger fan now that I've met him.

I've also had this pleasure. I met Robin at a my one and only convention visit in my hometown in 1994. The meeting happened to take place on my birthday, which my mom told Robin about. After we spoke for a few minutes, she went on stage and gave her presentation, then later, during her autograph signing in the dealer room, Robin called me on stage with her (it took a minute to get me and my wheelchair up there, a couple of the big Klingon guys carried me up), and she announced to the entire convention that they had a birthday boy among them ("boy" despite the fact that I was 24 at the time:lol:), and proceeded to lead the entire convention in singing "happy birthday" to me.

I still have the picture my mom took of me and Robin (with our arms around each other!:adore:) of us hanging in my living room.

It was a memorable day. It was a thrill to meet my first Star Trek "crush", even though it was ten years later, and I was long over it, but still....

I've met most over the years at various conventions, mostly.

However, a couple of stand-out experiences:
Years ago I met Walter Keonig at an improv club. His daughter was performing. It was nice to see him being a father, instead of an actor.

I just ran into Brent Spiner last week at the Disneyland Hotel. Although he was in a rush, he still let me take his photo, but asked me not to post it on line.

Jonathan Frakes was very nice and candid about his feelings on Nemesis. He also was very, very kind to my little daughter who wanted to tell him we had a cat named "Ryker."

I had the pleasure of meeting many of them at the Vegas convention last year and Stargate and Farscape conventions the year before.

I met Connor Trinneer at a Stargate convention. He was really nice. I met him at a photo op earlier in the day, and that night he came to the bar to hang out with the fans and we got to talk for a minute. Really nice guy.

A few months later I met Robert Picardo at a Farscape convention (he was there for the Stargate convention at the same hotel).

In Vegas I met William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Patrick Stewart, Avery Brooks, Jeri Ryan, Walter Koenig, George Takei, Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, Michael Dorn, Rene Auberjonois, Nana Visitor and Armin Shimerman all at photo ops. They were really great, especially Avery Brooks, who seemed to be having a lot of fun chatting with the fans.

I hope he's in a better mood this Saturday when I'm meeting him at London Film & Comic Con. Been looking forward to it for 5 months now!

I'm also meeting Krüge himself, but he'll be crazy busy so I don't expect to get a chat with him.

My best stories of meeting Trek stars involve Walter Koenig, James Doohan, and Leonard Nimoy. The Nimoy story is a bit long and requires some setup. I may link to the version of it recently published in my Trek blog at the end of this post, though.

As for Walter Koenig, I’ve met him twice – both times literally bumping into him as he was rushing out of an elevator. The first time was at the 1974 Americana Hotel con in NYC. I was only 7 years old at the time but my 17 year old brother and I ran right into Mr. Koenig. He was very gracious and chatted with us for a minute or two afterward. 20 years later it happened again at a con in Valley Forge, PA but, this time, at 6’ 4” I nearly knocked him over. He did quell my embarrassment significantly by laughing when I pointed out that it had happened before!

I met Jimmy Doohan at a very lightly attended con in Newark, NJ in 1993 or ’94. When he did his panel there were only about two dozen people in the ballroom. I had a front row seat and spoke right to me several times. He even sat down next to me and chatted afterwards. He was a very genuine, nice, and funny man – a great guy! Later he signed two autographs for me.

My Leonard Nimoy story is really good but quite long. I hope I’m not breaking any forum rules by linking to it. If I am, please let me know and I’ll delete the link.
