McCoy Haters

I'd like to see more McCoy in the nu-trek but have to agree that it'll probably continue to be Uhura.

His character in the NuMovies has been reduced in prominence because they wanted to give the other characters more to do.
Thing is, in TOS there were only three real characters (and that's on a good day, half of the time it was just Kirk and Spock) because the show's formula revolved around only those three (they're a Freud Trio: Kirk the Ego, Spock the Superego and McCoy the Id) with everyone else just interchangeable background characters who occasionally would do stuff.
So the TOS formula only really works with 3 characters at a time, not an Ensemble cast. To make others (mostly Uhura) more prominent they HAD to reduce the prominence of one of the Trio, and unfortunately it's McCoy.

I really couldn't handle DeForest Kelley's performance, sometimes, in TOS. His useage of such verbage as "poppycock"(!!!) and "hobgobblin"(!!!) and getting loud, often times, was just so damn annoying to me. Oh, but he's acting "Human" ... spare. Unfortunately, NuMcCoy's inherited TOS McCoy's annoying personality traits and it didn't have to be that way - these traits don't make him "charming," at all. Otherwise, I do "buy" him as a world-class scientist and physician and would want McCoy treating me.
Haha..welcome to television in the 60's. Me, I grew up in the 60's so I tend to enjoy it more. DeForest Kelley was terrific as McCoy, warts and all. Curmudgeonly country Dr. with a heart of gold. What's not to love?

Agreed. In this timeline, McCoy hasn't had the chance to grow in the same way, so there are bound to be some differences overall. I still think Urban does a stellar job channeling DeForest Kelley, though.
Were you under the impression Kelley wrote his own lines?
McCoy is awesome. I guess he can sometimes be a bit holier than thou in his insistence of emotion above all, but that only feeds the repartee he has with Spock.
On NuTrek he just doesn't really do anything. He's not a main character, they didn't put nearly the same effort into his character they did into Kirk, Spock or Uhura, and his performance somehow seems like an impression of DeKelley's McCoy rather than a new interpretation.

The main problem with McCoy's role in the new films is that Kirk and Spock have been at odds so much that the classic trio dynamic doesn't exist...McCoy doesn't have a useful role in the new Kirk/Spock dynamic.
You're conflating the performance and the script.
Exactly, Kirk is supposed to be the "Ego" who tries to referee between the Superego (Spock) and Id (McCoy).
But the NuMovies have made Kirk more of an Id himself, taking over McCoy's role so now McCoy has nothing to do.
Happy birthday to the late, great DeForest Kelley who would be 94 on January 20th. I really regret never being able to meet him and say how much I love his work as McCoy. A supremely talented actor, who, alongside the equally brilliant Nimoy, created magic, and arguably two of the most memorable characters in TV history.
Urban is a terrific successor in the role, and I'll add my voice to those hoping the Spock/Bones relationship gets some more screen time in ST3.

... I just wasn't typing out the complete thought, seperating the two. I was kind of using a shorthand, I guess, interchanging them and being lazy about it. But the script and the performace was both equally bad, when it came to McCoy's freaking out at Spock and getting loud, so often. DeForest Kelley did seem to be delivering an unnatural performance, at times like that.

Agreed. McCoy's reactions were totally human.
I found Scott to be the most natural character on the show, but McCoy comes in second in that regard.

...this. One of my few disappointments with the new movies is the replacement of McCoy with Uhura. It does ruin the classic Trinity of TOS.
Keith Urban is imitating Kelley, not channeling him.
