McCoy Haters

I have been puzzled as to why I have read so many posts mentioning that they don't like McCoy's character. They cite how grouchy and ill-tempered he is. I think I have finally figured out why. I'll get to that shortly.

In TOS and the prime movies, McCoy was always emotional, and occasionally irritable. When he was irritible or angry, it was a reaction to a situation. McCoy provided a lot of the humor in TOS and movies. He was not necessarily irritible by nature. Most of the time McCoy was was an emotional support for Kirk (and sometimes Spock), as well as the rest of the crew in general.

So why the hatred of his character? I think I've finally figured out why.......

The way McCoy has been written in JJ's movies, he is nearly always angry. He is usually unpleasant. He is now condescending. While they have used him to humorously in a couple of scenes, and there have been a few scenes where he is fairly calm, the overall one impression one comes away with after watching the 2 movies, is that this is a person who hates his life. He is bitter and unhappy. In the TOS, he complained sometimes, but most of the time his complaining was written for humorous purposes. I think it humanized him somewhat and made him a more realistic character. JJ's McCoy has done a little complaining for humorous effect (You just shot our ride! I hate this!), but most of the time he's just plain grouchy. The pickup lines he was using on Dr. Marcus made him likeable and funny and I guess making Kirk's hands swell etc. in the first movie were supposed to be funny, but he is not really a likeable character in JJ's movies. While he could occastionally be a curmudgeon in TOS, this is now his defining characteristic.

I think people have projected JJ's McCoy onto TOS and the prime movies' McCoy. This is likely especially true of younger viewers who probably havent even seen much of TOS episodes. I think that's why they don't like McCoy's character.

Strangely enough, Dr. McCoy is my 16 year old daughter's favorite Star Trek character. DeForest Kelley as McCoy, I should specify, because she does.

A few things.

Where is this body of people who hate McCoy? I don't see any such thing.

Is this thread intended to be for bashing nuTrek through the back door? If bashing nuTrek is what the thread is really all about, then shouldn't it go in the STXI+ forum?

If the evidence for hating McCoy is from reading "so many posts mentioning that they don't like McCoy's character" as the OP says he's puzzled regarding (I assume that the OP is talking about posts on the board somewhere), then I'm puzzled as to why it wasn't clear in each of those posts which version of McCoy the poster was talking about. I'm puzzled as to why there was any mystery there at all.

I think I've finally figured out why.......

Again, if the issue under discussion is only in correlation to nuTrek, shouldn't this go in STXI+?

One of the complaints I heard about McCoy is that during TOS he comes off racist (or "specie'ist") toward Spock. That some of his friendly little jabs aren't really all that friendly.

I don't see it myself, but it is out there in the fanverse.

:)

It's my understanding McCoy has always been a popular and fan favourite character. Maybe there is someone out there who doesn't care for him, but that's to be expected, just as I'm sure there's someone out there who doesn't care for Kirk or Spock either.

So why the hatred of his character?

Never seen any evidence of fan "hatred" for McCoy. Neither McCoy. Neither actor.

I once witnessed a large Australian convention melt in admiration for De Kelley when the con organisers had organized to ring him up, on loudspeaker, for his birthday. A wonderful, hilarious, spontaneous interview. (This ballroom of people had not known this event was going to happen.)

I saw a similarly large group of Aussies melt in admiration for Karl Urban, not long after the 2009 movie had come out, when he walked up the middle aisle to do his one-hour presentation, already performing his opening monologue from the movie. He had the roomful of fans eating out of his hand. And he was extremely naughty with the antics he pulled with the microphone. (Down Under humour.)

...the overall one impression one comes away with after watching the 2 movies, ...

It is hard in the period of two motion pictures to develop a character to a degree that one can over a few seasons of television. JJ's McCoy is a mere emulation of the fully developed McCoy that we all know and love. If he comes off as moody, give him a break. He's a doctor not a public relations agent.

Well, I don't know what's going on in the Star Trek Movies XI+ Forum (there could be a McCoy-torching mob in there for all I know) but if we're talking about the TOS McCoy, then:

A) I don't recall ever seeing more than two or three negative posts about him.

B) That still seems like a lot. ;)

I think the main problem with McCoy in NuTrek is how they stuck a couple of boobs on him and had him sleeping with Spock.

I do have to agree that the Leonard McCoy presented in the JJ films so far does seem to lack the genuine warmth of DeForest Kelley's portrayal. Karl Urban does do a reasonable Doctor McCoy in my opinion, but he doesn't have that "glint in the eye" that DeForest was often able to convey so effortlessly. There's a certain lack of the inherent charm of DeForest Kelley in Urban's portrayal of the character.

Chris Pine in many ways is a superb James T. Kirk, and Quinto (when allowed to be more stoic) steps into Spock very easily. But I must admit I'm still not yet convinced by the New McCoy.

Urban's McCoy hasn't had a lot of chances to be the easy-going curmudgeon we all love. In the first two films he's had to deal with a lot of stressful stuff that make it difficult for anyone to put on the kind of laconic charm that made Kelley's McCoy so lovable. Perhaps in the next film he'll have the opportunity to sit back and relax.

I get the impression that nuMcCoy is regarded as the closest of the nuTrek's character to their original TOS character.

And I agree he isn't given enough to do in the nuMovies. And that's probably because all the minor characters are getting slightly bigger roles.

How can someone hate McCoy? I actually like him more than Kirk or Spock sometimes. I mean distaste for JJ-McCoy, sure, but the REAL McCoy? He's awesome!

Of the TOS big-three McCoy is my favourite as he is always the most human.

I like Urban's McCoy, he is obviously a fan and wants to do the character justice, unfortunately he has been totally underutilised and pretty much ignored in favour of NuUhura.

I always took that as a personal jabs about pointy ears and green blood at Spock as something to irritate Spock with, rather than towards all Vulcans. In fact, in TOS he was very respectful of Sarek and T'Pau and Encounter at Farpoint depicts McCoy as having great respect for Vulcans.

I like Urban's McCoy, he is obviously a fan and wants to do the character justice, unfortunately he has been totally underutilised and pretty much ignored in favour of NuUhura.

Agreed. That is very unfortunate, too.

I also believe that Urban's McCoy has been far too underutilized. I am hoping this changes in the upcoming film and we see a focus of the original big three, Kirk/Spock/McCoy, as opposed to the new big three that is appearing to be promoted. I suspect, though, that it isn't going to happen because of some sort of marketing/demographic thing.
