Matt Jefferies original shuttle design

Re: Matt Jeffries original shuttle design

I am back on it!

Sorry I had to shelf my shuttle project for a few months to take care of work and real life.

So here is an update....
New additions are retractable stairway that is fully rigged and ready for animation (see if you can figure out how it works), bussard details and a few other little touches.

More updates soon!

Re: Matt Jeffries original shuttle design

Individual steps fold out on hinges with a hinge half way down the length so when folded up the entire thing is relatively flat? Looks alot like the stairs you get from a commuter plane. Great work! Can you do that in Continental Express Airline livery?:techman:

Oh, and LOVE those end caps!

Re: Matt Jeffries original shuttle design

That must be one of the nicest 3D images I have ever seen. It just looks gorgeous! Keep up the good work, RedSpar! :techman:

Re: Matt Jeffries original shuttle design

Totally fantastic work. :techman: Matt Jefferies would be proud. :techman:

Re: Matt Jeffries original shuttle design

Re: Matt Jeffries original shuttle design

Some of the major decals have been applied. Finished with the materials on on the small bits.

I have learned one thing doing this ship that white is one of the hardest colors to get correct in a render. It either ends up looking too gray or just too bright and washed out.

Here is a beauty render:

Here is a quick and dirty render of the top:

Going to finish up the materials at the rear impulse engine area of the ship next and figure out what I am going to do with the rear landing gear.

I'm debating if I want to add more detail with panel lines or not. I'm kinda diggin' the smooth look though... What do you guys think?

Re: Matt Jeffries original shuttle design

Damn, that looks good. :)

Perhaps I've missed it, but why white? Why not use a color more like the color of the Galileo or the Enterprise, especially since white is difficult? Also, I'm not sure if anyone else agrees, but it is just a tiny tad too shiny. YMMV, of course and it's still great looking. ;)

As to detail - less is more, but perhaps a pencil thin gridline here and there would be a worthy addition.

Re: Matt Jeffries original shuttle design

My god, I will never be able to reach that level of detail in a model!:techman: That is some great stuff with the landing light details. Have to agree with Praetor, high gloss + white = porcelain.

Re: Matt Jeffries original shuttle design

Thanks guys! Yeah, I'm still playing around with the hull material, I'm still haven't finalized what I want to use yet. I'm definitely going to add some subtle detailing.

Re: Matt Jeffries original shuttle design

Great work, RedSpar. You've really captured it. Great details, too.

Re: Matt Jeffries original shuttle design

Still looks all kinds of awesome! I wouldn't change a thing. :techman:

Re: Matt Jeffries original shuttle design

The sensor/landing lamp suit isn't working at all for me, perhaps because it just doesn't seem like something that would would expect to see on an airplane, which would fit in with Jefferies' aviator's aesthetics and the general feel of the shuttle.

But that's just my take. Looks fine in any case. ;)

Re: Matt Jeffries original shuttle design

Integrated landing lights are commonly mounted in the leading edges of many airplanes, so I don't know where you are coming from on that one.. But really the point is moot since the housing is covered in very reflective glass so you don't really see in there anyway.

Re: Matt Jeffries original shuttle design

The ultra sharp corners on the frame just doesn't look right to me, and it's perfect squareness bothers me somehow. Perhaps if the edges were more rounded and the frame seemed more built up it might look right to me. It's just my opinion.
