Matt Jefferies original shuttle design

Re: Matt Jeffries original shuttle design

Thanks guys!

Sorry, I have really been a slacker with this model. My life has been way too scattered lately to give this the time that it deserves. I'm going to get some more detail and textures on it soon and do spend some quality time on a top notch composition shot. I want to get it done soon though so I can move on to something else Trek.

And Kagan - yeah I know I need to at least get a simple interior in there.... ;)

Don't forget the little dome on top and the "Raquel Welch in silver jumpsuit"... ;)

Seriously... it's remarkably to me just how much this shuttle resembles the little submarine Proteus. Which came first, again?

Re: Matt Jeffries original shuttle design

Had a little time and thought I'd whip up a quickie comp shot of my shuttle parked in my cul-de-sac. I saw Vektor's awhile back and loved it, so I thought I'd give it a shot too.

I gotta say: this kills me. :techman:

Re: Matt Jeffries original shuttle design

Yeah, I can almost see the engines spinning slowly and hear a low hum when I look at that pic. :techman:

Re: Matt Jeffries original shuttle design

^^ The giveaway I see is that the ship's shadow is too gray rather than bluish to match the other shadows on the pavement.

Re: Matt Jeffries original shuttle design

And the starboard nacelle should have shadows from the tree on it. Still looks way awesome though! Hey, when you hit the unlock on the keyfob, do the bussards flash?

True - if you compare it to the truck's shadow it's not dark enough, but then the shuttle is a little higher off the ground, too. Then again, I've never been good at shadows. :p

Re: Matt Jeffries original shuttle design

I got to say this is pretty <expletive> cool.

I love the overall design. The only thing I can't quite get my brain around is the bent wings; for some reason I can't get the idea out of my head that they should fold down in flight... But that's my personal bias I guess, I like seeing mechanical stuff.

That's funny; the only thing I like about the sketches are the folded wings; very dramatic. The rest is too 'convenient', not dramatic but not utilitarian either. Just, simple.

That's great.

Really a fantastic design; I think this is probably what the shuttles looked on in the Robert April or Christopher Pike era.

It pains me that the only way I can get a model like this is to make it myself. I'm pretty sure that my modelling skills are not up to it.

It would be so awesome if someone were to manufacture/offer a decent-sized resin or plastic kit of this shuttle... it truly deserves its own kit.

I love the Shuttle RedSpar, but please do an interior shot for it and also a rear shot in your cull De sac that would look fantastic IMO.
Again excellent work.

Re: Matt Jeffries original shuttle design

I am back on it!

Sorry I had to shelf my shuttle project for a few months to take care of work and real life.

So here is an update....
New additions are retractable stairway that is fully rigged and ready for animation (see if you can figure out how it works), bussard details and a few other little touches.

More updates soon!

Loving this great work !!!

Woah, you guys dug up my old thread. This poor shuttle has been sitting on my HD about 85% done for a loooong time now. I need to find some motivation to finish it.

This is pretty cool. Apart from "will that even fit through doors!?", it's a really nice design that would've been impossible to build on TOS's budget, but would look totally at place. Would've loved to have seen this in the Animated Series, for example.

Just to build on some earlier comments. The bottom-right sketches in your composition are actually from the Phase II shuttle, as aridas said: seen here as appropriated for the "War of the Worlds" proposal.

Doug Drexler posted a Galileo concept by Thomas Kellog, which also looks rather awesome (and strangely like the movie era "big shuttle".. did they go back to this concept for that one?), and could maybe also be made in a Class F variant (perhaps a short range/atmospheric/TMP airtram predecessor).
