Marvel Comics: Siege

I quite enjoyed the end of Siege and plan on getting the hardcover in July when it comes out. I especially enjoyed the splash final page of the Avengers line up.

As for DC... the guys in charge there now are obsessed with the Silver Age. Its only a matter of time before you start seeing "Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen" or "Superman's Girlfriend Lois Lane" on the shelves...

Seriously, yeah, in this regard DC really lost of lot of my business. Rant ahead.

One of the really great things about DC was their development of the concept of the legacy character--indeed, some of the Silver Age bigshots they've resurrected out of the most misplaced nostalgia were legacy characters! The legacy character was a tremendous innovation, because it permitted controlled change to be introduced into the DCU. You could have retirement, death, even old age (barring Ian Karkull), without having to totally throw away the old concept and create a new one. Beyond that, it was a always-present characterization device, because the legacy characters had the experience of history to look back on, and a legend to live up to.

Would Starman have been awesome if it had starred Ted Knight? Fuck no!

Instead of utilizing this awesome concept that had served them so damned well for nigh on fifty years, someone (I personally blame DiDio and Johns, but surely there's enough to go around) let their worst fannish instincts run wild, turning what was once a mostly vibrant universe into a stagnant cesspool of zombies marching around antagonizing the living (and a long time before Blackest Night).

Barry Allen, Hal Jordan, Ollie Queen, and Bruce Wayne are dead. I miss them like any normal fan, but unlike the prototypical man-child of comics, I comprehend that death is not a temporary condition, to be very rarely appealed and even more rarely to be overruled. Even if their legacies weren't superior characters--and that's an arguable point--at least there was change.

^ As has been pointed out several times before Bruce Wayne isn't dead he was lost in time and the first issue of "The Return of Bruce Wayne" came out yesterday and was excellent. As for the concept of legacy characters which I consider myself a fan of I just don't think the general audience and that is ultimately what the companies always seem to target to not their hardcore fan base (after all look what Marvel did to Spider-Man) they're not ready to accept new characters in the place of old ones. People are still wanting Bruce to come back and haven't given Dick a chance as Batman even though I think "Batman and Robin" has been great fun so far. I think DC has brought Bruce back a little sooner than they should have but with the third movie a year or so away they were probably mandated by their parent company to do this. Hal, Ollie, and Barry are all back and we're all the better for it IMO.

Now then back to the thread...I just read the New Avengers finale and thought it was great and that it ties in nicely with "Siege". Now that the superhuman registration act has been tossed out by Obama what does that mean now for Spider-Man? After all part of the deal he made with Mephisto to restore his identity was due to the SHRA now that it's gone that reason is invalid. I thought Peter unmasking during "Civil War" was one of the best things that Marvel has done and another reason why "One More Day" pissed me off so much. He's already revealed himself the Fantastic Four and the New Avengers...

Is President Obama actually identified by name and/or likeness in the current Marvel comics? Doesn't that play havoc with the sliding timeline down the road?

^^ It wouldn't be the first time. They've used contemporary Presidents-- like Nixon-- and other public figures-- like Kissinger-- before.

Yes Obama is named...and there was a special Amazing Spider-Man that sold out and had an insane amount of reprints. Also Bush was the prior President as he was in the Ultimate Universe. It's been current Marvel policy that their universe is OUR universe if it were populated by their superheroes. Joe Q has stated this on several occasions.

Yeah, they've done that a lot over the years.

The one thing I've found silly in the Marvel Universe is that they still treat the United Nations like it's some kind of powerful organization. The UN is one of the most corrupt and impotent organizations on the entire planet.

^ Agreed however they do this in "Doctor Who" as well and even have a militarized special ops branch of the UN "U.N.I.T."

But doesn't Dr. Who take place in...the future! ;)

I was leary about the Heroic Age at first. I couldn't get it out of my head that maybe Disney forced this on them. But I have to say, reading more about their plans I like it a lot. It'll be nice to drop the angst and let the heroes be heroes. It's a good thing.

I am glad Daredevil is going to stay dark though. Anyone here about the upcoming Daredevil Shadowland crossover they have planned for this year?

They've been working to this for a few years...this was part of Bendis plan for the Avengers and the Marvel Universe, he's stated it in several interviews and way before the Disney purchase. His goal was to break things down, introduce chaos and then build things back up and unify everyone again and that's exactly what's been done.

Honestly, I would love to see a Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen series in the style of the Silver Age series. The more absurd, the better. It can be out of continuity, but I would totally be there to pick it up.

Barry Allen, Hal Jordan, Ollie Queen, and Bruce Wayne are dead.

Bruce was not a legacy character and he was always planned to return before he was even killed.

Ollie is iffy as he wasn't deal for a prolonged period of time and held the role of Green Arrow for 55 years before being replaced.

I swear that I read something before the big shake up at DC Ent that DiDio said that they were thinking about bringing back Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen. Lord knows they've done issues recently focusing on Lois. I would mind if they combined Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen with Superman's Girlfriend Lois Lane!!!

Well, they technically brought it back with a yearly one-shot. However, the tone was radically different than the Silver Age title.

Also, in fairness, the recent issues featuring Lois actually make sense since Superman is/was currently off Earth, away from his primary titles, and featured primarily in the World of New Krypton mini-series.

Actually, how does Obama undo the Superhero Registration Act? Or does is "Obama" shorthand for "a Democratic Congress"?

And yeah, Bruce Wayne was a bridge too far. I forgot he didn't really die in Final Crisis, as made (abundantly) clear in the final panel (at least I think it was the final panel--I'm not digging up that crisis to make sure). Jordan, Queen, and Allen are all fair targets, though (not to mention that Kent! although he's more of an exception since Superman isn't really legacy material in the same fashion as the other three, not even really to the extent of Wayne, because he has no Dick Grayson).

I wonder how long it shall be before Ted Kord and Max Lord are back, setting up new a Superbuddies franchise.

It's more like bringing back the Marvel Universe as it was, which would be a good thing. If it's possible for the current crew to do it. Which I have absolutely no confidence in whatsoever.

I probably would, too. The great thing about having Marvel and DC in the 60s and early 70s was how different they were. Marvel had the heroes living in something like the real world with some tight continuity and DC was totally off the wall-- I swear those people were on LSD. I always leaned more toward Marvel, but I was disappointed when DC Marvelized itself. There's really not much to compare with what they were; the current audience is too self-conscious to appreciate anything like that.

God, I fucking loath the DC Silver Age. At least in how they went about their stories. True, they introduced some great new characters (Hal Jordan, Barry Allen, etc), but the stuff they did with Superman and Batman was just :cardie:.

I know they are bringing more Silver Age elements back, which I was hesitant when that started to go down. But so far, they are doing it while avoiding the outright goofiness of the Silver Age.

However, the moment Beppo the Super-Monkey comes back, I'm out! :p
