With Secret Invasion's conclusion as perhaps the MCU's first true creative failure for a TV series as felt by more people than not (at least around here), I thought it would be a good time to review how the Disney+ shows are faring for people overall. That way we can direct tangents in the Secret Invasion thread on that topic over here (which I'm guilty of initiating).
For me, I've enjoyed to loved all of the shows until now, although I found The Falcon and the Winter Soldier lacking in some regards while Ms. Marvel had a couple of missteps (but I enjoyed both of them greatly overall). I think most of the shows have served themselves wonderfully while also adding to the larger tapestry of the MCU without feeling beholden to it. The performances in all of the shows have been stellar, including Secret Invasion whose actors kept the show from reaching outright bad levels and instead came out as disappointing and wasting great storytelling potential.
WandaVision, Loki, and What If...? were pitch perfect for me and I cannot wait to see more of what they may provide (whatever for that might be for Wanda and Vision). I know I'm in the minority regarding What If...? but I'm a huge sucker for alternate history stories and I thought every episode ranged from wonderfully utilized to absolutely spellbinding.
She-Hulk, Hawkeye, and Moon Knight all experimented with the format and I loved the character arcs that played out in each of them. I likewise can't wait to see more of them, even though their futures are less obvious (aside from Echo, Daredevil, and Kingpin).
1. WandaVision
2. Loki
3. What If...?
4. She-Hulk
5. Hawkeye
6. Moon Knight
7. Ms. Marvel
8. The Falcon and Winter Soldier
9. Secret Invasion
I have an idea of most people's opinions about most of these shows but I'm still curious to see how people feeling now that we're in a new phase (as of Secret Invasion).
I like the diversity we have been getting, though sometimes hard to get my family interested anymore, at least as a whole.
No one was excited about Secret Invasion, and i too was pretty disappointed. Getting major deaths that felt like little consequence...not living up to potential, and not seeing how it would connect to future Marvel stuff nor an end credits scene, which have been hallmarks for most productions, and got me excited for the next thing.
Ms. Marvel was much higher for me, because it really related to my daughters, and had that fan-feel that i also connected with.
Also Falcon & Winter Soldier was high due to the different social issues they addressed, as well as really showing a true continuity of character (as we began to meet Sam, he was a counselor...we see him do that, and show his Captain AMerica-Worthiness in a good way in the show). However the violence and language was a but much for one daughter.
So Sanity, the largest movie retailer in Australia, has said Disney told them they are no longer releasing any physical media down under, GotG 3 will be the last Disney product to get a physical release.
This matches up well with reports last month about Studios fully abandoning physical media and no longer even enforcing copyright on pirated dvds as long as they are physical, causing a new boom in piracy as it becomes the only way to actually get physical copies of media.
Also matches up with the weird collectors release of WandaVision that comes without the show. Which has actually been happening with gaming for awhile now.
Won't be long until it happens everywhere else too.
Wow...it looks like i will get to see the return of the Bootleg Man at my local Popeye's Fried Chicken restaurant!
While i totally get not wanting to mass produce DVD's.... wouldn't it make sense to license out to speciality dealers who can MAKE individual hary copy DVD's for people who want to buy them?
Those operators, in individual cities, could sell them in stores or by mail. They just have a special app that records each copy so they have to pay accordingily (and a mailbox to send in defective ones, and not get charged) . Seems like an easy way to make up.
