^I suspect the only way that would go down would be if Marvel had full creative control and Sony just footed some of the bill in exchange for a piece of the profit pie.
Honestly though, I think Spidey is spent on the big screen. If they do go ahead with making him part of the MCU, the way to do it would be in a TV format. Maybe a short-run Netflix thing if that Defenders project proves viable.

I think Spider-Man's too big of a franchise to not have on the big screen. And, while Sony has slowed down, I've seen no sign they intend to stop, so I don't think they're spent.
I didn't say I think they *would* go that way (quite the contrary, I fully expect them to run the character into the ground in repeated attempts to make as much momey as possibel), just that IMO it'd be the best way to go for the character.
The problem with the Spidey movies as I see it is that they're all basically the same movie made over and over again.
More so than most comic book characters, Spider-Man is at his best in long-form serial formats like TV shows.
Spider Man appears to be struggling at the box office only as much as it is getting less profitable. This slide is nowhere near enough to put him back on T.V., it's just that it was rebooted too soon, and good as the reboot was, the second film was poor.
It is, however, hard to see what they can do to improve things. Spider Man is pretty limited by both what previous movies have already done and his rather mundane background.
Injecting him into the MCU could open things up a bit. It would certainly be better than waiting for the next appearance from Doctor Octopus, Green Goblin and co.
I don't see unresolvable problems with Sony and Marvel working together. Shared creative control for his appearance(s) just takes good will, enthusiasm and properly instructed lawyers.

^I believe Marvel and Fox are further from a joining than Marvel and Sony.
I don't think Sony would lend Spider Man to the MCU with his own version. It's just bad business to have two competing Spider Men, one with his own storyline, and another with his MCU storyline. I'm sure there will be viewers who don't like Sony's version and will only watch the MCU version. If there is only one version, it will deter that from happening.
They could however put Tony Stark in the next Spider Man movie reading some news paper about Spider Man before telling the world "He's Iron Man". That would/could join the universes, but I doubt that would happen as well.

Any storylines would have to tie up between Sony and MCU continuities. I really don't think audiences would take two different Spider Man continuities running at the same time, even if the powers that be were that dumb.
It may be easier to just do 'background' links such as featuring buildings (Stark/Oscorp towers), background news reports/newspapers, cameo's by recognisable actors etc.
How hard would it be to have a headline about a superpowered confrontation in New York, very blurry mobile phone footage in a news report, an unnamed spokesman played by Robert Downey Jr, or a bald black guy wearing shades ?

If they mergedthe current Spider-Man films with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, then where would The Amazing Spider-Man fit into the MCU chronology? I don't see S.H.I.E.L.D. or HYDRA, two of the world's most powerful organizations especially in New York, anywhere. If The Amazing Spider-Man takes place in-universe in the same year as its release year, then why haven't they tracked down a high school student yet?

Just have Spidey join the Avengers during the movie to help fight/save the civilians, he never even has to take off the mask (easy payday for Andrew Garfield to simply come in for a day of voice recording as his stunt double does all the work) then go off to his own (Sony) movies fresh off his Avengers hype and let's just enjoy things for what they are.
Any part of the Spidey movies that would have needed SHIELD or outside attention took place at a time when they were too busy. Done, don't dwell on the logistics.

If they go that route it may even be humanly possible to keep it secret (although probably not).

I guarantee you that there won't be a single person in a theater thinking about this when Spider-man is swinging through the city battling Thanos with the Avengers.
Have him played by a guy in a motion capture suit. He seems to be CGI most of the time in his movies anyways.

I may be in the minority, but I don't want to see the X-Men, FF, and Spidey in the MCU. I like that we are getting to see characters we haven't seen on screen before and are less recognizable names. I would like Fox and Sony to start producing better movies, however. In this sense, a better joining of the companies would be for Fox and Sony to sign some degree of creative control over to Marvel studios. Marvel studios have a much better understanding and genuine respect for the characters and their histories.
I somewhat agree (especially with X-Men and FF). Each has enough of they're own stories to tell. With that said, I wouldn't mind Sony selling Spidey back to Marvel for them to create their own version, or a cross-over with The Avengers and X-Men (maybe Scarlet Witch based) for a movie or two (or three).
