Marvel Animation’s X-Men ‘97 Discussion Thread.

John Semper Jr known for being both producer and head writer on the television series Spider-Man: The Animated Series has confirmed his agents did reach out to Marvel about doing Spider-Man '98, but their response was the same as something quoted in a recent interview, that they want anything from 90s Marvel animation to encircle only the X-Men at the moment

Well, I hope at least they do a full Spidey crossover in some future X97 episode. After all, the X-Men crossed over into Spider-Man a couple of times (well, it was only Storm the second time), but it never went the other way besides wordless cameos, so it'd be good to restore the balance.

It would also be nice to reconcile the discrepancy of Captain America appearing in X97 when he was lost in dimensional limbo last we saw him in Spidey continuity. Although I realized that there's actually a time jump of 9 months or so before the start of X97, the span of "Jean"/Madelyne's pregnancy with Nathan, so that's enough time to move beyond the final season of Spider-Man and account for the returns of both Mary Jane and Captain America. (So it really should be called X-Men '98.) Maybe after Spidey and Madame Web rescued MJ from dimensional limbo, Spidey realized he should do the same for Cap.

I just want to see Kitty Pryde appear. I've read how the first failed marvel x-men animated series was "Pryde of the X-men" and because of it the studio specifically didn't want Kitty Pryde in this show... but it's been decades. I think you can have her appear.

With all respect to John Semper Jr and everything he gave us, I'm not sure if he will ever work on any future Spider-man series as he has been quite vocal about Marvel and Sony stealing his ideas from the animated Spiderman series and not giving him credit. Whether you agree with his thoughts on this or not I think he's pretty much burned any bridges there.

We finished the episodes last night. Ah, ye olde "lost in time" trick! Although I'm wondering if Jean and Scott are in an alternate universe.

It's probably kind of both. The way X-Men time travel usually works is that there are multiple possible branching futures. The original "Days of Future Past" storyline (which the show adapted in its first season) was meant to end with the dystopian future being erased, but the writers eventually decided to bring back its characters and setting, so it was established that it still existed as one potential future alongside others.

He is right though.

To be fair, in the comics

Cyclops and Jean Grey went to the future and raised Cable for about 12 years, although in that case there was a character called Mother Askani who pulled their minds into the future. Their minds were put into others bodies but I'm pretty sure Cable knew what was going on, and while in the future they ended Apocalypse's threat, at least for that time.

In the actual comics Cable treats Jean more like a mother then Madeline because of this. When Madeline made a return recently, as the Goblin Queen, Jean finally made peace with her by copying her memories of raising Nathan/Cable over to Madeline. So Pryor finally became allied with the X-Men/Krakoa instead of an enemy, although she's still a weird kind of demonic character in general as the Goblin Queen.

I'm staying positive for season 2, but I will say that I think that What If? is extremely mediocre, and I wish they hadn't given X-Men 97 to someone who worked on it, and he definitely shouldn't be messing with pre written scripts, they'll almost certainly be made worse.

I just hope that in taking advantage of X-Men 97's huge popularity they don't end up ruining the show.

So it’s gonna be great!!!!

By your own logic that means you should skip things I like, like the first season of X-Men 97, and watch things I hate. Here, I'll help you out by listing five movies I've seen and legitimately hate: The Last Airbender, Meet the Spartans, Catwoman, Bloodrayne and The Master of Disguise. Go have a movie marathon and tell me how awesome those movies are, because I really, really hated those movies and if I hate them they must be good, right?

Surprising how few of the replies to that "Grant Morrison suits" tweet are corrections that they're actually Frank Quitely suits, since Morrison was the writer, not the artist.

Aside from that, I don't consider this good news, since I didn't like those outfits much. Well, maybe they'll look better in the show's design style.

The Morrison/Quitely suits, really? the absolute worst looking costumes ever worn by the X-Men in any media, that make the films black leather suits look good by comparison? They literally had a joker mocking the movie suits last season, now they're literally doing something much worse. Hopefully they at least won't be adapting Morrison's garbage stories, although if they did at least they'd look better then they did in the comics (I hate Frank Quitely's art, everyone looks like they're melting and all of his terrible faces look like the same melting person with different haircuts).

Yeah, not fan of those suits. And I'm thinking they must not have been very popular since they didn't seem to last long in the books and haven't brought them back. I can understand wanting to update the suits, but those are kind of an odd choice for the ones to go with.
