Mario Maker

I got through the Expert 100-Mario challenge with something around 40 lives left.

I probably swiped about four times total. I don't mind the punishingly hard levels, even the ones with some dickish things like, you hit the P box and have to time your jump EXACTLY when it runs out to avoid falling into lava. I only swipe when it's one of those levels that they just threw random stupid stuff in, or where they obviously didn't play test it very well and there's jumps that need some random thing to go right to even be possible.

The way to speed up the unlocks involves, whenever you see 'New package available on this date' you set ahead your console's internal timer.

I'm choosing not to do that though because it allows me to learn how to use each new feature individually.

You can do it that way, but it's not necessary.

For everyone who doesn't know how to get all the tools, here's a quick guide:

1.) Place every New object you have at least once. Go ahead and visit new themes too. I'm not sure if this helps, but you may as well experience and play around with all your new tools while waiting, because there IS a waiting period between unlocks. Bear in mind that while the unlocks ARE still locked by a period of playtime, IDLING WILL NOT WORK (or is at least less effective). Just actively mess around in the editor while you wait, that's why you bought the game - it's freaking fun. :D

2.) Eventually, you'll get a message saying new tools will be available on (tomorrow's date). But we won't stand for time locks, will we?

3.) Place a large square of blocks. ? Blocks, Brick blocks, whatever you feel like.

4.) Hold L to enter Multi-Grab Mode and highlight the biggest chunk of Blocks you can.

5.) Hold ZL to enter Copy Mode and Copy these blocks everywhere. About 5 times might do it.

6.) Release ZL. You should hear truck noises, followed by an early shipment unlock process.

7.) Repeat until everything's unlocked ;D

Source GameFAQS message board.

Both methods are time consuming, so I guess it's really up to personal preference.

Just uploaded a new level I like, though this one is kind of a hard one:

Blasting Zone: 6D6F-0000-004C-5517

Let's just say, you have to blow up walls with bob-ombs. There is an easier path but it is harder to find.

There's a way to unlock everything all at once, or at least quicker than a few items a day.

From what I read, play in the Editor for a bit until you get that message that new items will arrive the following day. Then start spamming the hell out of blocks (place some down, copy them and just start pasting them all over the place), after a while you should hear a truck sound and a message that will pop up saying it's Sooner than expected. You can keep doing this to unlock everything on the same day.

I only did it the first day, and I felt it was too much work so I let everything unlock naturally (the last of my stuff just unlocked this morning, I can't wait to tackle sub-levels).

Cool. Might try that out.

Not a huge fan of the 10 lives challenge. Stuck on the SMB 3 level with the pow block (p switch) and it's really annoying :scream:.

Anyone beat that level yet?
Yeah, the 10-Mario challenge isn't too bad. You'll be wishing for that level again when you get to 100-Mario Challenge on Expert :p people are making some BULLSHIT levels out there.

Yea it's ok, but I nearly had my butt handed to me in the stupid Boo level. Thankfully learned how to get the timing right so I wouldn't lose all of my lives :guffaw:.

Shit. That's insane.

What's an example of one?

Hardest level I've played was Super Meatboy inspired. You have to do a lot of precision wall jumps and there are a lot of razor wheels embedded in the walls. But, that's 'Fun hard', not cheap.

Hardest cheap thing I've seen is a case where you hit a P box, drop onto a row of coins that runs to a wall of coins, over lava, with no head space. So basically you have to start running, and reach the wall EXACTLY the moment the P box runs out.

Most annoying cheap thing was this level where you immediately have to drop down into this small space with about seven rows of stacked goombas. Now, normally this wouldn't be so annoying, but it was a New Super Mario Bros level so you were doing it right up against a wall, so when you tried to jump it would keep interpreting it as a wall jump and throwing you to the right. That was one of the ones I skipped.

Just played some more last night and I unlocked both the underwater levels and the castle ones.

Dang is the P box one from the 10 level Mario Challenge?

Just made a pair of new levels last night.

Lava Smash

An Aye for an Aye

Just made a new ship stage tonight.

Atomic Ship Danger!
Theme: Super Mario Bros 3
Course ID: F5DE-0000-005F-2954
Difficulty: Medium to hard
Description: A crazy enemy filled pirate ship with a surprise at the end.

I put up two mean tonight, both of which are kind of mean. Both Super Mario World theme.

Starman's Revenge:
B0DF-0000-005E-7CF3

This is a level where the ground is flying koopas and starmen are raining down from the sky.

Jetra's Evil Puzzle Box
7DD4-0000-005F-75F7

This is a ghost themed puzzle level with a lot of doors that lead you around in circles. This one may be expert level.

One level worth mentioning on list of 'cheap stupid crap found in 100 Mario expert mode'.

So, this level constantly had invisible blocks placed exactly where you would hit to jump over hazards. But I tolerated that until I got to the end.

This guy stacked a ton of sideways trampolines on top of the axe.

That was when I swiped.

Damn that's insane. What number level is it on?

New level:

Fire In The Sky
Super Mario Bros
Course ID: 9AD4-0000-0063-A226
Difficulty: Hard
Description: A lot of fire poles and a lot of very small platforms.

I'll play some of your levels now Spock.

You mean which stage in the challenge? I think it was #2.

Yep. Thanks. Just played a creative level last night that required kicking Koopa shells a certain way, only issue I had with it was that the flag pole was blocked by blocks.

Every time I kicked the stupid Koopa shell it ended up hardly denting the wall, so I ended up not being able to beat the level. I left the guy a comment via Miiverse, so it wouldn't star. Let him know that his level could be rather unplayable due to the issue.

I don't mind creativity, but levels (not so much like the one above) that are just made for the lols and trolling are no fun at all.

Fire In The Sky
Super Mario Bros

Cool. Enjoy :). I'll try some of yours out tonight, Jirin.

Woot! Just found out a way to skip levels.

Unlock Mystery Mushroom Costumes

Tapping an amiibo against the GamePad in Course Maker mode you will unlock that character, but you can also get these costumes (along with other fun non-amiibo costumes) simply by beating the 100 Mario Challenge mode. If you are short on time, simply play the mode on its Easy setting and you'll only need to complete 8 community created stages. If you really hate one of them, just hold down the - button to skip. Upon finishing you'll be awarded with a new costume.

It looks like it's only in regards to easy mode, but... I wonder if it would work in hard mode. It would come in handy when coming across trolly levels.

You can skip any level at your hearts content, even in Expert mode (I haven't personally done this but I'm a part of the Gamefaqs community and many people have mentioned doing this).

Cool, glad that they included that. Some levels are just too headache inducing.

The only thing that will make me skip a level is if it falls in the intersection of 'Hard' and 'Stupid'. If I'm dying over and over for stupid reasons. When I play expert mode I tend to swipe like 3-4 times.

I think my next level will be easier, my last few are kind of hard. It's hard for me to design as if I haven't been playing Mario games since I was 5.

I'm thinking of a level where you have to clear the path for a large mole that you have to ride over spikes.

Yea those can be a pain too.

Cool, that sounds pretty creative!

Just started figuring out how to use tracks last night. Working on setting up an ice based level. Man I love those levels. It's so easy to die in them.

Oh joy! A new update! Nintendo's timing is just impeccable.

I think it's time to post my courses...

They're all levels that I think would feel at home in a Mario game. There are no wacky gimmicks, nothing really that feels out of place, with one exception, and I'll point it out when I get to it.

7339-0000-005A1A60 (Grassy Plains)

A pretty simple Super Mario World themed level that is more or less straight forward. There's a secret or too in the level as well.

23C4-0000-0051-F276 (Good old fashioned NES style fun)

A SMB3 themed level. I didn't realize it till I uploaded it, but it's kind of short and lacking enemies, but then I remembered that was the M.O. of some of the earlier Mario 3 levels, so it kind of fits in.

FD07-0000-0043-5AEB (Full of Secrets. Can u find all?)

Another Super Mario World themed level. This one has a few secrets that you can look out for. I'll give at least one hint, there's an area where you can use Yoshi to cross or you can use a P switch to cross the same area. Both Yoshi and the P-switch are hidden though.

5CD0-0000-003E-207D (Take it Slow and you'll do fine.)

Yet another SMW themed level. This one is a Castle stage, and is not overtly difficult, as long as you take the advice from the title ;)

9D32-0000-003B-70D4 (Starts out familiar, but then...)

I really like the courses I come across that try to start out like World 1-1 from the first Mario game and than change things up a lot, so I attempted to do that here. Again, another straight forward course, that is not impossible.

B3FB-0000-00340B82C (Deep Caverns)

I'm really fond of this one. It's done in the original Mario Brothers underground theme. I also tried to make it feel like you were exploring deep underground, I more or less succeeded (I feel) and the level is pretty easy too.

F883-0000-0029-1350 (A little bit of everything)

This was the first course I uploaded, it's the exception I mentioned above. While there are no enemy spam like some early level uploads I've seen. Stuff is just kind of randomly all over the place. Still works as a platforming level though.

So there it is, the seven levels I've uploaded. I just reached 30 stars so I only have 20 more to go until my level cap is upped. The only thing I ask, only star my levels if you beat them and/or have a good time playing them. I'm not posting these to shill for stars, I just want to share what I feel are some fun levels.

Oh, and constructive criticism is appreciated as well.

@Jarin: Just tried out your Up and Down level again tonight... had a bit of trouble at first, but once I got the hang of it, got pretty far in it. Not giving up though. I like the design. It's tough but fair. Reminds me of some old school Mario levels I've played.
