Contest: ENTER March Art Challenge - Retro Rockets

Welcome to the 224th TrekBBS Fan Art Challenge and March's Theme, which was chosen by vote, is:

Retro Rockets
Everything new is old again! Take inspiration from older art forms, styles and designs to depict Trek tech and scenes. What would a cave painting of first contact with the Vulcans look like? How about a transporter room in an ancient Roman mosaic? Regency-era Borg? Klingons discovering America? Medieval away teams?

A long time ago in a webforum not so far away... we had a similar contest, which was very popular and is long overdue being revisited. So, if any one needs some inspiration you can take a look at the entries for that challenge at this link: Trek in Other Artists' Styles.

The Rules
  • the artwork you submit should be created during the month of the challenge
  • only one final image can be submitted (although it may contain multiple views)
  • your final entry should be posted in this thread (although dedicated WIP threads are appreciated)
The winner gets to sport the “Art Challenge Winner” banner below their name for the following month and has the honor of hosting December's challenge. And if you have any Theme idea's for future challenges or for our Festive December Contest please post them in the "Suggest Your Themes!" thread.

You have until the end of the 31th March post your final entries here.

If you have any questions, suggestions, or need more time, just let me know.

Looking forward to seeing your art. Have Fun! :bolian:

I can’t remember when I last finished a submission this early, haha. But somehow this theme was really inspiring and I had some time this weekend, so I thought … why not?

I’ve always been fascinated with Maya hieroglyphs, which tend to have this really iconographic look to them containing hunched over figures in a box, oddly modern in a way. So I combined them with my desire to do something with the characters from Strange New Worlds.

I realize some of the likenesses are not perfect, but I think from context clues you’ll be able to decipher each one of them. I call this “Uncovering a Strange New World” …

Oh, that is amazing, @Michael! I can definitely tell who's who - and I'm very surprised that you managed to get all of Pike's Pompadour in the 'box'

Haha, yes. Accurately portraying his legendary hair was really important to me. I bet the ancient Mayans would be as fascinated by his hair as they would of the future tech they brought with them.

Thanks for the kind words about the piece!

This could very easily be animated. "How did we get into this mess, anyway?" "Never mind that; how do we get out?" "The answer to the second question may lie in the first."

Great entries so far! :bolian:

Is anyone else working on an entry and/or needs more time?

Unless very last minute inspiration strikes I'll be sitting this one out, unfortunately. :sigh:

Yep, I'm working on something that I hope to have finished (or at least presentable) later on.

I hope inspiration does strike for you,@Starscape as I always enjoy your work :bolian:

@Cyfa... Wow!!! That is truely astounding work, I've been sitting here staring at it for who knows how long lost in all those glorious curves. Magnificent, love it.

After your kind words earlier I reassessed some of my options for entries and I might have something brewing, I'll extend the deadline for another day (until the end of the 1st April) and see if I can make something of it.

Thank you so much, @Starscape! I feel much better about it now - I'd intended to do something much more ornate and in colour, but despite having been on holiday for nearly two weeks, I just never got around to starting anything until yesterday (in part because the weather had been conducive enough to be working up at my allotment instead).

I'm glad to hear you have an idea now. Good luck!! :bolian:

I revisited an old idea from 2020 (which was inspired by a comment from @Michael) for this month's challenge entry : "Stella Nymphaea constitutio".
I also looked at botanical art & illustrations from the 17th, 18th & 19th centuries, in particular the artist Pierre Jean François Turpin, but also Georg Dionysius Ehret and Maria Sibylla Merian.

This is so inspired and awesome! Love the liquid floating warp nacelles … err … Naceels!

And I’m honored to hear something I said helped bring this about.

@Starscape, I want to mirror what @Cyfa said: I always enjoy your work and I’m glad to hear you say you had an idea for this after all. Looking forward to it.

Thanks, @Michael. :)

Another thread on the board started me thinking about the things I appreciated about ST: Picard. And one of those is the initial teaser poster showing Picard and No.1, I would have loved it if the series had just been about Picard and his dog's mis-adventures around the vineyard.

Anyway, I've often thought about re-interpreting the poster in some way and I finally realised this contest was an opportunity to do just that. So, here is Picard and No.1 in the style of L.S. Lowry:

I'll post the voting thread tomorrow. So there's a little more time, if anyone else needs it.
