Manu Intiraymi as "Icheb"

I doubt they killed Icheb off because of what the actor did. They wanted to do something to effect Seven. Why not kill someone she saw as almost her own son? Better than creating a new character just to kill off.

Why should reoccurring characters be immune? That's silly.

Not immune to death. Just maybe don't go all gore on a character was in enough episodes to sort of be part of family. I know Voyer didn't have as many of those types like DS9 but they had a few. Ichep was one.

Bringing back a character only to kill them? Tired.
Killing a long-established character for ratings? Lazy.
Killing a long-established character solely to create motivation for another long-established character? Trite.

In theory would this not count as fridging a character? Not that such a thing bothers me. The most important thing is always the plot and the main characters development but when you think about it they are kind of relying on people to have some knowledge of who he is in order to feel for Seven's loss over him. If I had never seen Voyager before the death would mean very little to me because they did no development with him on the show.

exaxtly.

By the way, I loved how they referred to the absence of his cortical node: it’s a line that won’t mean anything to those not familiar with the character but that shows that the writers are in fact familiar with him.
The current Trek writers are very familiar with Trek. References from episodes, novels and even ancient fanfic have crept into the shows.

Of course, they're such deep cuts they go over 90% of fans' heads.

If Manu played Icheb gay, which is entirely possible, then maybe he would have been after a 27 year old woman to be his surrogate mother. Icheb being gay is a valid reason for running away when he erroneously thought that B'Elanna wanted to boff him. Of course that would mean that he was written gay and that Manu wasn't trying to pull an Andrew Robinson.

The actor who played him was born in 1978.

The show was never clear about the character's age, other than implying that he looked quite a bit older than he actually was due to time spent in a Borg maturation chamber. Since the maturation chambers hold Borg drones until the age of 13 (VOY: Collective), and his was stated to have released him prematurely, it seems likely that he was under 13 when he joined the crew of Voyager.

So despite having what looked a 20 year old body, as possibly an 11 year old child, who Icheb should have been romantically interested in is Naomi Wildman, even if it looked creepy.

not necessarily: a lot of 11 year olds find interesting older girls and not ones their age.

Never got the idea that Icheb was supposed to be gay, honestly.

He had two romantic episodes.

One where he thought he had to fight tom for the pleasure of B'Elanna, and the other where he loved Seven so much he cut half of his brain out, and gave it to her.

The first was him running from what he believed to be a certain heterosexual encounter, and the second in retrospect may have been filial love, and not romantic love at all.

I was suggesting that "Gay Icheb" was a secret choice made by the actor, that he never shared with anyone.

Like how we used to think that George Michael was singing about women in all his love songs, because we were dumb.

Yep, I never felt he had romantic feelings for 7 and his reaction to belanna was pretty similar to Kim’s to 7 (but much more appropriate, as Icheb was much younger).

There’s a huge difference between growing and changing, and being something completely different.

She was assimilated at 6, so that's when her emotional development stunted. Once liberated she was in many ways like a hyper-intelligent child. 20 years later, she would have matured to the point of perhaps seeming like a different character.

The majority of teenagers on TV are played by older actors. I think Icheb being a teenager was implied if never outright stated.

I never once thought Icheb had romantic feelings for Seven. It always came off as a mother/big sister relationship to me.

Icheb being gay is a cool idea, but I think there was scant canonical evidence. I believe Kirsten Beyer established him as gay or bi in the Voyager novels. I have now created a headcanon that the love of his life was q (son of Q and Q).

I could see him being into Q's son. I suppose it's always possible they could use Q's son to even bring him back to life if they wanted. Though this feels more like a book idea than something we would ever see on the tv shows.

Higher age rating, more mature show. I'm fine with it.

I don't see any maturity here...

Before I found out about Manu Intiraymi's views, I assumed they recast him because the original actor was in his 40s and Icheb was supposed to be in his early 20s in the flashback

Did they give a year for the flashback? If not it could have happened any time between Icheb reaching the rank he's shown having (Lt?) and 2399 (21 ).
