It seems to me a relatively new phenomenon, one which I have noticed only here on the internet, that the fanboys themselves reject attempts by TPTB to cater to the fanboys.

I have tried to explain this to my somewhat less-obsessed fanboy friends, and they just don't get it.

It's no wonder that TPTB have a hard time deciding what approach to take when making new movies and television shows.

I don't see what's so hard about it. I just want my "fannishness" to fit in with the rest of the story and be interesting even if you don't get the reference.

The 4th season one I saw was a mirror universe ep where mirror Archer ends up on a future mirror ship -- a TOS era ship. Which meant that all of the ENT crew had to change into TOS uniforms for no reason and hang out on the bridge.

It was Cotto smacking the audience upside the head saying HEY LOOK THEY LET ME PLAY WITH THE TOS SETS. There really wasn't going on beyond that. I like fanservice, but I don't like fanservice that assumes that I want nothing else. I'm not impressed by a bad episode on old sets.

Well, if TPTB was making the movie only for you, it probably wouldn't be that hard to get inside your head.

Getting inside the heads of millions of fans and non-fans alike, and making something that will appeal to a wide range of sensibilities and sensitivites? That's hard.

Sure, Bad Trek is better than Good Trek.

TNG, V, and Enterprise are better than TOS, TAS, DS9, SCE, IKS Gorkon, and TITAN.

Just cause its a "new take" doesn't mean its entirely different at least every bit as much that the new BSG is fundamentally based on the premises of its source material or "The Whiz" is based on "The Wizard of OZ".
